Join classical archaeologist and art historian Nick Stavrinides for the second lecture in this three-part series exploring the eastern Aegean islands of Greece. Kos was the birthplace of Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, and home to the Asclepeion — the most celebrated medical sanctuary of the ancient world, where travelers arrived by sea seeking healing. In this lecture, Nick explores how Kos became one of antiquity’s most renowned centers of medicine, while its luxurious Roman villas and thermal spas made it a destination for elite travelers seeking to restore both body and soul.

General Notes

This lecture is the second in a series of three lectures. To attend the full series, please also enroll in "Greek Islands of Antiquity — Rhodes" (#25734) scheduled on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at 3 p.m. (ET)/ 12 p.m. (PT), and "Greek Islands of Antiquity — Samos" (#25736) on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at 3 p.m. (ET)/ 12 p.m. (PT). The cost is $25 per lecture. Your online lecture will take place live over the course of 1-2 hours. All times are listed in the EASTERN time zone. If you live in a different time zone, please adjust your schedule accordingly. This live online experience uses Zoom Webinar, an easy-to-use web video service that includes closed captioning. All you need is an Internet connection and your computer. You will receive a confirmation email when you enroll, and a reminder email one week and one day before, as well as the morning of the event with a link and instructions on how to tune in. You will not be pictured on screen during the lecture, but you will have the opportunity to ask the instructor live questions using the Q&A box. Unless otherwise noted, all those who enroll in this program receive access to the live event as well as a recording of the lecture that you can watch any time within the two weeks following the live event.

Nicholas Stavrinides

Nicholas Stavrinides is a trained archaeologist and art historian. He has excavated in Israel and Greece, and has conducted field studies in Italy and Provence. He received his bachelor's in classical studies from the University of California, Berkeley, and his master's in classical art and archaeology at the University of Michigan, where he also pursued his Ph.D. Nick is an educator who currently teaches in Northern California. A native San Franciscan, Nick resides in Sonoma County where he enjoys mountain biking, hiking, and wine tastings.
