Getting on/off motorcoach; driving approximately 81 miles throughout the day; about 2 hours total, with stops for field trips. Walking up to 1 mile at Merritt Island and lagoon; periods of standing up to 1 hour at a time; standing in water during seining activity; refuge is equipped with running water, picnic tables and restrooms. Be sure to bring closed toed water shoes, change of clothes, swim attire, towel, bug spray, and sunscreen. Walking at space center is dependent on personal preference.
At the hotel each morning, we’ll gather in the main breakfast room for a delicious buffet breakfast including choices like an egg dish, breakfast meats and potatoes, hot and cold cereals, yogurt, assorted breads and pastries, and fresh fruit, plus milk, juice, coffee, tea, water.
Boarding our motorcoach, we’ll transfer to explore Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge on a field trip. Upon arrival at the visitor center, we’ll settle in for a talk given by a park ranger to introduce us to the park, its wonderfully varied habitats, and animal inhabitants. Afterwards, we’ll go drive to the lagoon at Sendler Educational Outpost for hands-on experience of sample collection, or seining, of fish, plants, and invertebrates. In groups with a chaperone using seines, a sort of dragnet, we’ll capture animal species found in the Indian River Lagoon. Captured animals will be studied, identified and placed back in the lagoon. We will get wet up to our upper legs!
At a local restaurant, we’ll enjoy plated meals with soft drinks and water included.
We’ll then transfer and return to Kennedy Space Center with our multi-day passes to experience the things we might have missed last time. During independent exploration, you may want to catch the IMAX movies, try out the Shuttle Launch Experience, and pilot the Astronaut Training Simulators if you haven't already. We’ll then return to the hotel.
Back at the hotel, we’ll spend the evening with our fellow participants and show off all of our newfound space knowledge with a trivia game about outer space.
