At a Glance
Join local experts for an adventurous journey through one of America's most spectacular wild river canyons. The trail follows the north bank of the river as it rushes through Oregon's coastal wilderness towards the Pacific. Hike the length of the Rogue River National Recreation Trail — used by gold miners and Native Americans for more than 1,000 years — carrying only a daypack, while equipment and supplies are carried down river on rafts.
Activity Level
Outdoor: Choose Your Pace
Each day, choose from multiple hiking options based on your desired level of challenge and pace, ranging from 4-12 miles on varied terrain. Elevations range from 150 to 885 feet. Those who choose shorter hiking option will be transported on rafts.
Micro Group
These adventures feature our smallest group size, with 12 participants or fewer.
Best of all, you’ll…
- Stay in four unique off-the-grid wilderness lodges.
- Learn about the natural history and local lore of this spectacular canyon as you experience its extraordinary beauty and diverse habitats.
- Enjoy stops to discover regional history — from gold-mining remnants to author Zane Grey’s cabin.

Activity Note
Resort check-in from 4:00 p.m.
Afternoon:
Program Registration: 4:00 p.m. After you check in and have your room assignment, join us in the main lodge area to register with the program staff, get any updated information, and confirm the time and location of the Orientation session. If you arrive late, please locate your Group Leader and let them know you have arrived.
Dinner:
In the main dining area of the lodge.
Evening:
Orientation. The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the up-to-date program schedule, discuss roles and responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer questions. Hikes will be led by the Group Leader and program staff who are expert naturalists. This program features both river rafting and raft-supported hiking. The rafts will carry Road Scholars, food and gear, and staff who will row. Everyone will need to bring a day pack and carry the items each of us will need along the trail during the day. Because the location of some lodges would result in long hikes on certain days, we will transport hikers by raft around certain sections of the trail. Sections of the Rogue River we will be rafting are mild (Class II whitewater and below). Road Scholars will be able to get on a raft at most points during the day if they choose. Elevation gain/loss will vary from day to day. Periods in the schedule designated as “Free time” and “At leisure” offer opportunities to do what you like and make your experience even more meaningful and memorable according to your personal preferences. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. Program activities, schedules, personnel, and indicated distances or times may change due to local circumstances/current conditions. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding. Continue getting to know your fellow Road Scholars, settle in, and get a good night’s rest for the day ahead.

Activity Note
Two field trip choices. Group A: 4.8 miles total for the day with lunch stop and raft ride to Black Bar Lodge. Group B: 9.6 miles total for the day with lunch stop. In general, the elevations encountered today and on subsequent days are low, beginning at 689 feet at the trailhead, but the trail climbs and descends multiple times. The trail is considered of moderate difficulty overall, but certain sections of the trail are more challenging. Highlights include views of Rainie Falls and an elective hike to historic Whiskey Creek cabin. We will learn about the last miner to live in the Rogue River Canyon and the canyon’s rich history with numerous historic sites remaining from the trapping and mining days.

The hiking on this trip can be down-right grueling and often challenging--parts of the trail could be described as "hair-raising"--but it's an experience unlike any other. Everything about this program was well planned and executed--and that couldn't happen without Ted's excellent experience as guide, and rafters that can only be described as remarkable. Savannah, Ben, and Tyler astounded me every day with their expertise, skill, and passion for river rafting and making sure we were all having a good time. We couldn't have asked for a better crew. And they were fun to be around!

If you're up for a magical, exciting and grounding adventure, then journey down this beautiful and ancient river corridor on foot and by raft as people have done for millenia. There's nothing like it!

Wonderful trip hiking and rafting along the Rogue River. We had the greatest of trip leaders and river guides. It was a very special trip. We were inspired by our guides and fellow travelers as well. Every day and every lodge was unique.

The Lodge to Lodge Hiking and Rafting Experience in the Rogue River Valley is an outstanding experience. The area is stunningly beautiful. Every hike is amazing. The river rafting was challenging enough to be an adventure without being dangerous or terrifying. The Group Leader and the Raft Leaders/Rowers were friendly, competent and fun. The historic inns were interesting and did not have WIFI so I got the unexpected bonus of being off the grid and out in nature which was wonderful!

If you want to hike the Rogue River Trail, experience some of the river and stay in wilderness lodges, this hike is for you, just be careful of the poison ivy, it's nasty.

We had a wonderful experience. The group was well suited to the activities and the scenery was more than worth the price of admission. The historical side of this trip was quite interesting as well. Ted, Michael and Alex were excellent guides. The only complaint I would have is that there just wasn't enough time to just take in all the amazing beauty that the Rogue River showcases.

this trip has been one of the best Road Scolar experiences for me. The small group size, the moving from Lodge to Lodge and the altering of rafting and hiking were all that made this trip a must.

Had an amazing Rogue River Hiking/Rafting experience. Everything was enjoyable--food/lodging/hiking/rafting/leaders/other participants/weather. A great getaway!!

A wonderful experience hiking and rafting the Rogue River through the Wild and Scenic Area. Our nights in remote lodges along the river were a perfect part of the adventure.
— Review left October 6, 2021
I loved seeing the Wild and Scenic Rogue River both from above by hiking and below by rafting. There aren't many places you can go to be "off the grid" and this trip is one of them. The remote lodges were special, the food was fantastic, and the leaders were a lot of fun!

I thoroughly loved this trip! The hiking and rafting was fabulous! The wildflowers were blooming like crazy. The food was delicious too. I highly recommend this trip!
