Activity Note
Getting on/off a motorcoach; driving about 75 miles, approximately 3 hours riding time. We’ll board a motorcoach and begin a full-day field trip to the Isles of Mull and Iona by riding to Oban’s ferry terminal, a short distance from the hotel. We’ll board a local ferry to cross the Sound of Mull, with splendid Hebridean views from the ship’s decks and observation lounge. After stepping ashore at Craignure on Mull’s west coast, we will board a motorcoach to cross the island. Our Study Leader will inform us about Mull’s history and wildlife as we ride through beautiful heath and forest landscapes to the shore of Loch Scridain, then follow the coast road along the Ross of Mull — the peninsula that forms the south-east of the island. From Fionnphort, a small fishing village at the tip of the Ross of Mull, we will make the 1-mile crossing on the foot-passenger ferry to Iona.
Lunch:
At a charming hotel on Iona.
Afternoon:
We'll explore the ethereal Isle of Iona – a place where they say “the veil is thin.” Iona was a center of Irish monasticism for four centuries and is today renowned for its tranquility and natural beauty. We’ll explore Iona’s main settlement, Baile Mòr, on foot with our Study Leader. Our walk will take us to Iona Abbey, an important pilgrimage site founded by St Columba in the 6th century, and to the remains of the medieval Iona nunnery. The serenity of the island is in stark contrast to its tumultuous history; Iona was subjected to numerous Viking raids in the 8th and 9th centuries, the most brutal of which is reflected in the name of Martyrs’ Bay to the south of Baile Mòr. St Martin’s Cross, a stone Celtic cross that dates to this period, still stands outside the abbey today. We'll return to Fionnphort on the foot-passenger ferry and board the motorcoach for the journey back to Craignure, then return by ferry from Craignure to Oban.

Breakfast:
At the hotel.
Morning:
After checking out of the hotel, we’ll board a motorcoach to explore the area around Fort William. As we ride along the shore of Loch Linnhe — the 30-mile sea loch with Fort William at its head — we’ll pass the 15th-century Castle Stalker on a small tidal island offshore. This rugged countryside was the setting for Robert Louis Stevenson’s celebrated novel “Kidnapped,” and we’ll learn more about the tumultuous 18th-century conflicts that inspired the novel from our Study Leader aboard the motorcoach. We’ll then pass Fort William and ride a few miles west to Glenfinnan, from where we’ll take a private boat ride on Loch Shiel. The loch is one of Scotland’s most historically significant and unspoiled natural treasures, and its 18-mile length is only accessible by boat. It commands wonderful views of the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct.

At a nearby restaurant.
Afternoon:
A 60-foot stone monument at Glenfinnan commemorates the beginning of the 1745 Jacobite Rising here, when Bonnie Prince Charlie claimed the thrones of Scotland and England in the name of his father James Stuart. The Best of Scotland is a superb educational and cultural experience. Highest ranking and that is due to its excellent itinerary masterminded by our educator extraordinaire Margaret Hubbard. She brilliantly intertwined the landscape with the history and culture of Scotland. Impassioned telling of devastating battles and a performance of Burns's Tam 'o Shanter by memory at the sites of its events were just a few of the memorable teaching moments by this master teacher. The gorgeous boat ride on the loch and very fun sheep herding demonstration will never be forgotten either. This trip visits the important castles, churches, art museums, medieval village, Great War memorials all illuminated by our wonderful instructor. On the whole, the hotels and food were good and the scenery was exceptional. I have zero Scottish blood (unlike most of the people on the trip) and I loved every minute of it!

I just returned home from one of the best tours in my life: The Best of Scotland with Emily Tait and David Spooner. This tour went to a couple places other tours do not, like the home of poet Rabbie Burns and also Rosslyn Chapel. The beauty and wonder of the land and people was magnificently shared by lecturer David Spooner. And tour director Emily Tait was exceptional: gracious, kind, most helpful and also at the top of her game. I feel enriched and blessed in so many ways and am grateful to Road Scholar for providing such high quality experiences for their travelers. This was my first Road Scholar tour and hope it will not be my last. Lastly the circular loop that we made through the country from Glasgow to Edinburgh was the perfect choices to help the traveler gain sa deeper understanding of the history and culture of Scotland, from ancient times to present. Well done! Very well done!

This is a wonderful over-view of Scotland, taking in as much of the country and its history as possible in a short time of 2 weeks. The fall weather was great, the leaders fun, knowledgable, efficiency great, and we highly recommend it!

This program is a perfect introduction to Scotland, including the geology, the geography, the history, and perspectives on the future.

This trip to Scotland was SO GREAT!!!
The history going back millennia, the places visited, the explanation of how it impacted Scotland then and now, were fabulous. For us, it was discovering the history of our ancestors, which made it even better. Out of the other participants I didn’t get the impression they had an ancestral connection to Scotland, but if you do, I highly recommend finding this trip and taking it.
You’ll see castles, palaces, understand the changes wrought over hundreds of years in culture, religion, monarchs, battles, leaders, and the lives of every day Scots over time.
And the cost is very reasonable in relation to what you will get out of the tour - hotels, meals, admission fees, bus costs, the expertise of the leader and historical guide — so much is included. For me it was the trip of a lifetime, and worth every penny.
I now understand the “why” of my ancestors leaving Scotland, coming to North America, and the lives they built and the foods, celebrations and history they had and brought with them.

This was a trip of a lifetime. Margaret, our guide and educator along the way, was Brilliant. She started with the most clear and concise review - a two-hour lecture on Scotland - at the beginning of our travel. She shared a wealth of information and was very knowledgeable about the regions we were traveling in - the landscape, plant and animal life, historical significance, folk lore and myths, and cultural variations from one region to the next. Margaret provide many memorable anecdotes, historical accounts - with an especially moving detailed accounting about the battle of Culloden. We heard and learned music from Scotland, had a wonderful presentation of the bagpipe history, generational importance and skills developed in learning the art of bagpiping. One of my favorite days was when Margaret recited a lengthy poem/ballad on the bridge - Lorna Doon - from memory. The country was beautiful and our guide allowed us time to savor every moment. Above and Beyond - Margaret recorded a reading of a children book we'd purchased for a grand-niece - in her beautiful Scottish Brogue. We continue to enjoy & cherish this generosity of time and commitment. Thank You Margaret
Additionally, Christine - who was instrumental in coordinating logistics and dealing with travel issues - was incredible. Our trip could not have been smoother or better orchestrated. Accolades to Christine. She also had much to share.
The recommended reading list - which we managed to read most of - was also invaluable in heightening each experience we had throughout this wonderful journey. We did see "the BEST of Scotland"
I've traveled to many countries throughout my life - for work and for pleasure ... this was our first trip with Road Scholars. Given the incredibly positive experience we had - it won't be our last. I recommend The Best of Scotland trip without reservation. Sincerely, Dr. Jennifer M Bottomley (Boston, MA)

Our "Best of Scotland" Road Scholar trip was wonderful from beginning to end. We visited castles, transversed lochs and glens, ferried to the Isles of Mull, Iona and Skye, learned about sheep herding with border collies.....and made new friends along the way! Thank you to our tour guides, Dorothy and David that enriched us with local geology, history, and culture. Road Scholar thinks of everything and made this trip informative, easy, and memorable for us!

Rather good "tasting menu" of what Scotland was and is ...

Excellent itinerary, tour leader, learning leader, and coach driver. Hotels mostly good, most notable exception being the Muthu Alexandra in Oban where the food, service, plumbing, and overall room ambiance were all disappointing. The Cruachan in Ft. William and AC Hotel in Glasgow were among the ones we most appreciated. Also, we really liked the roughly 9am start times each day.

Trip Expert/Educator:
Margaret Hubbard gave more than 100% every day on every event.
Protocol for Communicable Diseases:
To my knowledge, there is no stated protocol for the expectation of participants who arrive with obvious symptoms of a communicable disease(s) or who acquire such during the trips which involve sharing space on an enclosed bus.
SPECIFIC GUIDELINES need to be presented by Road Scholar prior to each trip and then enforced. Road Scholar is an organization that sponsors travel programs for age 55 and the average age of the participants at 72 years - this should be a concern for Road Scholar.
One participant, who on the first day, presented with a copious, productive cough; failed to take any precautions which resulted in > 80% of the 22 participants becoming uncomfortably ill. Many of us missed activities during the tour and some of us missed other independent travel activities that were to follow the Road Scholar Tour. For those of us who were concerned, we tested and were positive for COVID. Indeed the current variant is highly contagious. It is important to keep in mind: everyone in a travel group has invested time and money to participate; not just the symptomatic participant.
If Road Scholar had specific guidelines for those with obvious symptoms of illness, such as wearing a medically approved mask and isolating to the back of the bus; it would have helped prevent her spreading illness to the rest of us; though of course, not a guarrantee. The COVID pandemic is over but COVID and ALL of the other viruses; will continue to exist and to spread.
If nothing else was learned from the COVID pandemic; we should have all learned how easily respiratory diseases are spread within enclosed environments. Road Scholar should know better and their guides should enforce proper protocol to prevent their spread.

I do not hesitate to rave about the tour called THE BEST OF SCOTLAND. The leaders were both welcoming, organized, knowledgeable and helpful. I didn't have to worry about a thing. I commmend Road Scholar for choosing a variety of activities which would appeal to everyone. I enjoyed all the destinations we visited immensely, and I thought the pace was reasonable. I certainly got my money's worth! Best of all, everyone in my group was a friend at the end of two weeks. This was my first trip on Road Scholar, and I enjoyed the experience far far more than I expected to. In two weeks I really SAW the entire country of Scotland. I felt busy and challenged but not overwhelmed. My only suggestion for improvement would be to replace one hotel in Oban with another hotel that is at least a bit more remodeled.

Well Organized- I appreciated how I can just show up to a well organized day by day trip. Knowing where we were going made it easy to look at weather fir those places and prepare by packing accordingly.
We appreciated learning the past and present of Scotland life.

This was a great trip. I really learned a lot about Scotland and feel that I saw most of the country. RS is fortunate to have Margaret and Christine as guide and manager. Our bus driver, Stuart, was great too. I would have loved to have visited the soap factory across from the Whiskey tour. We had 24 participants. The group was congenial and traveled well. However, 24 is too large. I would have like to have no more than 18. Holly

Andrew was a fantastic guide. He had a great sense of humor, paid attention to all the group participants, was very aware of our needs, and we learned much about Scottish history. He was flexible and able to make adjustments in our itinerary that certainly added to our enjoyment of the trip.

The listening devices used by Road Scholar are not useful for hearing aid users. The earpiece is connected by wire to the battery pack and amplifier and the earpiece is meant to rest in the ear canal. That is not useful to a hearing aid user who already has an earpiece in the ear. Either, supply Blue Tooth devices that can be paired with mobile phones or supply TeleCoil capable devices for hearing aid wearers.

The trip was much fun. Margaret Hubbard, our tour guide, was excellent. She wove stories of Scotland and its history into each day--and then brought those stories all together at the end. Kevin Durjun, our group leader, did an excellent job as well. The tour was small and all of the participants were engaged and pleasant. Seeing remote areas of Scotland was educational as was spending time in the cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow.

This was our first Road Scholar trip. It was beyond amazing. The weather was incredible. We learned so much and fell in love with Scotland, especially the Highlands. May is the best month to visit Scotland. Our Kilted Guide (James Leslie) was funny, knowledgeable, passionate and kind. Our coach driver, Alan was a safe driver and always on time. Our coordinator, Kevin Heymann was a master in the art of wrangling schedules and keeping us on time, fed, watered and moving. We were in the best of hands. Thank you!

The Best of Scotland Tour was in a word OUTSTANDING. Our guide Jim, trip coordinator Kevn and driver Alan were indeed the 'DREAM TEAM' and together made this a memorable experience. We couldn't have asked for a better experience.

Excellent program complete with history, culture, experiences and time to explore Scotland.
— Review left May 27, 2024
This program presented the beauty of the Scottish countryside and the many Isles and Lochs. It is a program very much dependent on good weather, something Scotland is not necessarily known for. Our experience turned out to be very memorable as we were blessed with good weather. Walking the many cobblestone streets and paths can be challenging and the lack of multiple elevators in the hotels a real negative, especially for those with disabilities .

What a wonderful experience -- everyday, a new discovery or experience. Guide James was without equal, with his encyclopedic knowledge and enthusiasm for his homeland. Kevin was great in handling all the logistics! The company we traveled with was exceptional -- all friends by the end of the trip! Thank you for making this happen!

We enjoyed the trip very much and the Whispers devices are great! The tour "coordinator" Caroline was very competent, friendly and helpful. I offered her my personal information and invited her to visit us if/when she comes to Florida. Of course Scotland is beautiful and the landscape varied with mountains, lochs and fields, so we appreciated the geology map handout and brief talk that our resource person Dorothy gave while we motored along.
We were not thrilled with the food: while both in Scotland and Ireland breakfasts were very good, at dinner there were few vegetables other than potatoes, carrots and parsnips and no salads. That is a lesson, I suppose, in what the locals eat.
As I have attended many other Road Scholar trips since 2005, I've noticed in recent years that instead of having more formal morning or evening lectures by academics or other experts when we could take notes, our "experts" are more casually trained locals who talk as we travel. In the case of Dorothy on this Scotland tour, she seemed to have a "canned" presentation based on training she'd had and she recited it rapidly from her cell phone as we motored through the beautiful scenery. She also tended to lower her voice at the end of a sentence and to finish most sentences with "...and things like that." She is a pleasant person who would benefit from some training on giving content lectures.

This is a great program for anyone who is interested in seeing the diversity of and learning about the history of Scotland. Margaret and Kevin were excellent leaders. Margaret is a wealth of information about Scotland and imparted that information in a systemic, planned-out manner that gave us a good basis for understanding the country's history and culture. Kevin is a delight - always upbeat and kept everything running smoothly. The two of them provided us with a wonderful experience, so many thanks to them!

The Best of Scotland was a fun busy trip with wonderful adventures everyday. We saw and traveled to places more than I expected, it was more than described in the materials. Jim our guide was more than knowledgeable he was exceptional. He always had a smiling face and interacted with all of us with great enthusiasm willing to share his knowledge of the history of Scotland and just about any other subject regarding Scotland, what a treasure.
I always felt safe during our outings while being driven around by Stevie in the coach and walking the streets and other places. We always were given the information needed to make our around and knew when the coach was leaving thanks to Stewart.
Most of the hotels we stayed at were nice, most meals were pretty good with the exception of the Muthu Alexandra Hotel in Oban. I felt the rooms at the Muthu especially the bathroom was not satisfactory, they were very old and difficult to regulated the hot water with no safety bars or handles. I didn't think their food was as good as some of the other places.
Over all I think Road Scholar was worth the cost of the trip. I would consider paying a little more to have more choices than just 3 for dinner and to not stay at any 2 star hotels.
I did have a wonderful trip thanks to the great team, Stewart, Jim and Stevie.

Great trip, very educational, well run, good overview of Scotland. Alasdair was very theatrical, quite a performer; he made history come alive. Kevin kept everything running smoothly. Stevie was an excellent bus driver.
When we were forced to return to Glasgow, I would rather have had free time in Glasgow than a visit to the Falkirk Wheel (or else less time there). Stirling Castle was an excellent replacement for Inveraray Castle.
It wasn't ok for Kevin to ask on the bus if anyone objected to Craig (who got Covid) riding with us. I (and others) weren't comfortable but didn't feel we could object. It was good when Kevin asked about Craig rejoining our group and asked us to contact him privately if we objected.
I had no interest in the whiskey distillery. The nature reserve was interesting but way too long. We spent too much time at the fort. The tour of Glasgow, Culzean Castle, Robert Burns' home, Edinburgh Castle, Dunkeld, Culross, the bagpiper and the sheepdog demo were wonderful.
I liked the hotels; it was fun to stay in an actual castle! The meals (especially breakfasts) were great. The fort might be a place to not include lunch (not enough seating, no choices).
I thought that tipping wasn't necessary even though they all did their jobs (including problems like Oban) very well. Alasdair told us that we wouldn't see Stevie again after he dropped us at the castle and if wanted to "show our appreciation" (not "say goodbye") to him (hint: tip), that would be our last chance. Many of the other participants seemed to think that tipping (for all 3 of them) was required. I think that tipping expectations should be clearly stated in the program materials and also in the orientation meeting. It shouldn't be expected or necessary to tip them for doing their job well; tipping should be reserved for going above and beyond.

This was an "above and beyond" experience for us, and Road Scholar will be at the top of our list as we consider future travel tours. Their attention to detail, their expertise, and intention to provide a variety of types of experiences to appeal to a variety of interests within the tour - all were exceptional.

The program, The Best of Scotland, exceeded my expectations. The lead, Adam, and the educational lead, Margaret, were outstanding. I learned a tremendous amount about Scotland's history. The scenery was amazing, the old towns were a treasure to behold and the cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh were very interesting and made me want to return to explore some more. The Scottish scenery is very beautiful. The history of the country was fascinating and our group leader was very knowledgeable. I was surprised to find stones for memorials and burial sites that were 4,000 years old. Our coach driver, Stevie was very careful and we felt safe with him at the wheel. We were able to tour 5 or 6 castles.

I enjoyed the first week of the tour. The two leaders were great and took very good care of the group. Then several of us got Covid, and we were put off the tour, given the promise of a phone call (which never came), and left to fend for ourselves.
We got ourselves back to Glasgow and enjoyed our time there. But we all felt abandoned. I think RoadScholar needs to take out its own trip insurance, so that it can pay a local employee to pick up people and see that they get safely to a big city.
Until this policy of putting people off the tour and driving away is changed, I would be reluctant to book another trip.

Absolutely marvelous program. We gained a whole new insight into
Scotland due primarily to our study leader, Alisdair. Scotland is an interesting and diverse country and we learned about its history, culture, language, politics, etc.

Road Scholar really came through for us when our group was unexpectedly hit with Covid. I definitely would recommend Road Scholar.

What an amazing experience! I could not recommend it more highly. Scotland is truly a magical place, a bucket list destination.

This trip was remarkable. The Best of Scotland met all my expectations. Most of the credit goes to the Study Leader, Margaret Hubbard. She was phenomenal!

The Best of Scotland tour was wonderful! Margaret and Stuart kept us interested and informed throughout. We saw some fascinating places and learned so much about Scotland's history and culture. Highly recommended.

Excellent itinerary, trip, outstanding tour Director, program Director and bus driver. Rhodes scholar outdid themselves with this tour. I highly recommend Robin McGregor as your tour Director. He is so knowledgeable with information and little known facts. Mark Hamilton was there to solve any problems or difficulties of the tour. Allan, our bus driver, was excellent. I give the store a five star rating!

Well thought out program with a very good manager along. The program suffered from a guide with no presentation skills.

The Best of Scotland was a wonderful trip! Our guides brought the history, culture, and geography of Scotland to life with a variety of memorable and enjoyable experiences. This was my first Road Scholar trip, but it won’t be my last!

We had the best combination of director, Dave and guide Alasdair. Most if not all of the sites visited were educational and surpassed our expectations. The itinerary online was very helpful and followed during our trip. It was an exceptional experience,

I thoroughly enjoyed this program. Robin and Dorothy did an amazing job in spite of the Covid outbreak. We covered a tremendous amount of history and
visited the best sites in Scotland.

Visiting Scotland is well worthwhile, the beauty, the history, and meeting the local people in Scotland were delightful. If you are fortunate enough to have Dr. Kirsty McAlister as your program scholar you will be blessed with a wonderful educational trip.
— Review left September 4, 2022
This is a great introduction to the depth and scope of Scottish history and culture, in a 'road trip' format stopping at significant historical and cultural sites throughout Scotland and travelling through some of the most beautiful natural settings in the UK, if not the world.

My wife and I have taken more than forty trips with Road Scholar. We enjoy the educational components because of the opportunity to study the uniqueness of each locale. We just returned from Scotland.and were amazed watching a shepherd engage with his sheep and his highly intelligent border collies. This was a great trip. We learned and experienced so much. Traveling with like-minded people always doubles our pleasure.

This tour visits many of the places in Scotland that we hadn't seen on a previous trip to the main tourist spots. The landscapes and lochs and islands are beautiful. The stop at Culloden was a moving experience. Having Road Scholar make all of the arrangements was a great relief.

The Best of Scotland was incredibly informative and kept us going with so many places to see and learn about. Our group leader Christina was amazing and helped in every way to keep our trip running smoothly. Our program guide Jim was a true Scotsman regaling us with tales of castle intrigue and battle maneuvers from before the Vikings invaded thru to WWII. It was such a great trip with so many fun people in our group!
— Review left July 21, 2022
This is an adventure for lovers of deep history, green hills, rugged mountains, windy lochs, misty islands, castles and cathedrals, ancient abbeys, busy cities, sleepy medieval villages, and the mind-boggling juxtaposition of ancient and modern. The program is more intellectual, less performative. The standout experience is the act of traveling across this breathtakingly beautiful country by bus, train and ferry, with many stops to stroll, climb, see, feel, smell, learn, and commune with the past and the present. “Keeping up the pace” is a necessary part, because we covered a lot of ground, both historically and geographically. The group leaders did a superb job of taking us on a historic journey from the first historic records to the 21st century, using tour bus time to lecture on the upcoming historic sites of each day. Travel in 2022 has its fallout from the pandemic, and not every hotel was completely back up to speed, but hiccups were taken in stride and resolved for the best possible outcomes. That’s all part of the adventure, isn’t it? The beauty and the wonder of Scotland made these small challenges insignificant. I wish the trip had been a few days longer. I came away with plans to go back, to learn more, to experience more, and to commune more with Scotland.
— Review left July 20, 2022
If you have the desire to learn of the real Scotland this trip is for you. Don't worry you will still find enough of contemporary references to make it fun and interesting.

This was a very good trip but not up to the standards we have become used to after 7 RS trips. The information was there with Margaret providing a good history that was sometimes hard to put in sequence because of her mode of presentation, telling us what we would learn later and sometimes not tying it together. Dave, the logician did a great job coordinating but, like Margaret, was not satisfied until he had said everything two-three times in the same sentence. Stevie was a most competent driver and interesting in his own right. I am aware of the ebullient reviews by others but my experience with RS gives me more perspective. WHAT WAS MISSING IN THIS TRIP: The trip was all history lessons with tours of interesting places; it lacked experiential activities that could have included performances (we had one, a bagpiper who was very good and interesting). But while history is interesting, there is more to Scotland. We had mediocre food everywhere with fixed menues that were really boring and bore no relation to the food available in Scotland. Nearly every lunch was made up of tomato basil soup and sandwiches which would have fit well in an elementary school cafeteria. Even when we went to a pub one night, we had the same fixed menu of badly prepared chicken and overcooked vegetables. Every trip we have had with RS has had food as a major feature. Scotland has lots of interesting and unique food; we had none of it. Past trips had several meals with wine included; none here. Simply put, what we heard and saw was interesting; what we did was mundane. Finally, EVERY hotel was mediocre. It is apparent that RS has cut the budgets for this program and/or that the program organizers are single-minded about history and wars and castles without any interest in current Scottish culture. I would not recommend this trip to anyone wanting a full meal deal trip of Scotland. Read my prior reviews of other trips to see if I am fair.

A whirlwind tour of Scotland from Glasgow to Edinburgh via the western and Northern highlands. It gives a hint to further exploration in both the cities and the many other islands that were missed.

The sites visited were diverse and interesting. The use of both a group leader and a separate, very knowledgeable tour guide added immensely to the tour experience.

THE BEST OF SCOTLAND will not disappoint! You will see spectacular scenery and amazing architecture, and learn of the incredible history of the country. And along the way you will meet fascinating people! My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed this program, and we were blessed with the best tour guide, group leader, and bus driver. We also had beautiful weather!!!
— Review left June 13, 2022
Spectacular Scotland was presented to us by a dream team of Margaret, Dave and Stevie. Margaret’s educational narrative wove through the trip as the days went by, organized into historical, geological, musical, political and personal threads, all against the backdrop of the most stunning scenery imaginable! Dave’s coordination of our every move with sensitivity and skill in a very difficult reemerging travel world was masterful. Stevie, our engaging driver, managed the roads with skill and confidence and was a true part of the team.
The itinerary also seemed to be woven geographically to present the unfolding story of Scotland through time. Personal favorites at a moving Culloden battlefield and the spectacular Glencoe. This trip cannot be beat.

This was an extremely comprehensive and educational program. Margaret was outstanding in sharing her knowledge and passion, and Dave a master at logistics and communication. There is a lot of time on the bus, but the program director fills it with important context, interesting anecdotes, and Scottish music. The program description is very accurate, and participants should be prepared to walk on uneven ground, cobblestones, etc. As currently set up, this tour only devotes a day to Edinburgh, so I would recommend tacking on a few more days there at the beginning or end.

Absolutely the best Road Scholar experience I've had! And this was my 14th trip. Our group was congenial and interesting. Both Chris (logistics) and Charles (history) went out of their way to make sure all our questions were answered. Just wish it had been longer!

I truly enjoyed my experience on the Best of Scotland. We saw such amazing scenery and historic sites and got to hear about history of these areas including the geology of the area. The group leader and instructors were very knowledgeable and were able to talk about what it is like to live in Scotland. They were able to offer movies or books to increase our knowledge.

If you are interested in seeing the true beauty of Scotland, the Best of Scotland tour is the way to go. Also, traveling in a small group definitely had its advantages. The trip was a "trip of a lifetime", for me, and it was something that I will never forget! Thank you, Road Scholar, for doing everything that you said you would do!!!

We just returned from our trip last night. Sadly we had to leave the trip after 4 days due to us both coming down with Covid. I am writing to tell everyone how wonderful our Road Scholar leader, Niki Gilbert was in helping us navigate leaving the group and dealing with our time in isolation. Road Scholar moved us from the small town of Oben to the wonderful city of Edinburgh. Though it wasn't the trip we had hoped to take it turned out to be a wonderful opportunity to explore the city of Edinburgh. Yes, we were able to leave our room and sight see the city since neither of us had symptoms. We wanted Road Scholar to know how much we appreciate their making a difficult situation a positive one. Thank you. Hopefully our next Road Scholar trip won't be so eventful.

Five Stars
This was my first Road Scholar program after things started opening up following the covid pandemic. Dave, our Group Leader and logistics manager, worked behind the scenes to make the return to international travel enjoyable. Everything on the itinerary was open, and Scotland gave us a warm welcome. Cawdor Castle wasn’t yet open for tourists, but somehow, Dave got us admitted, and we were the only visitors that day. We felt like guests instead of customers. The original staff at Tulloch Castle were all back, and said how much they had missed the Road Scholar groups. We had a delicious 3-course plated lunch at the hotel on Iona, and had great fish’n’chips in Oban. The Culloden Museum is a very moving presentation of the history and aftermath of the battle. Not many churches in Scotland have tower bells but Dunkeld Cathedral has a peal of six bells. We were fortunate to be there on Sunday and hear the dedicated band of people ring the bells prior to the Sunday service. The skipper of our Loch Shiel boat stopped at the perfect spot for us to watch the Jacobite Steam Train cross the viaduct by the Glenfinnan Monument. As we cruised down the loch we were given history and information about the surrounding area. David, our Study Guide leader, kept us informed and entertained during all our coach trips. He played Scottish songs at appropriate times, told jokes, and explained the geology of the areas we passed through. He told us about the Vikings, the Clans, the battles, and the kings and queens of Scotland. He was with us on all our field trips, and joined us at our meals, so we got to know him personally. This is a wonderful program for anyone interested in Scotland. The itinerary shows that this is a very comprehensive introduction to all things Scottish, but you have to be there to experience the feel and magic of the place.

If you are interested in everything Scottish, this program will interest you. Whether you want to know what the land looks like and why, where the Loch Ness monster is today, how to make whiskey, who many of the most famous thinkers and authors of Scotland are and what they have created, these topics are part of the program. Or if you want to know about (eat) traditional food in Scotland, the history of the kilt, what happened to the kings and queens of Scotland, energy sources and current government of Scotland, these topics will arise as you travel through and visit settings impacting life in Scotland during the tour.

This certainly was the "Best of Scotland" and one of my favorite Road Scholar journeys so far! I had so many wonderful experiences and learned so much about Scotland's history and how that history still influences Scotland today. This trip was different from some other Road Scholar trips because our instructor was with us the entire time, rather than different local guides cycling in and out. Having Robin with us throughout our journey really enhanced our understanding and avoided repetition and omission, not to mention his extraordinary knowledge and ability to share that knowledge with us. I hope you have an instructor as great as Robin, a group leader as friendly and organized as Jenny, a bus driver as safe and helpful as Alan, and a group as friendly, interesting, and timely as our hardy group of 28 travelers!

The Best of Scotland is more that any brochure can depict. The scenery, history, and the people make it a most worthwhile adventure.
— Review left July 7, 2019
This was my seventh European trip with Road Scholar, and it was as worthwhile and enjoyable as the six previous ones. The triumvirate Carole-Robin-Stevie (group leader-instructor-driver) formed a dream team. Carole took care of all the logistics with impeccable precision and unfailing good humor; Stevie got us everywhere on time (and often ahead of time), kept the coach immaculately clean inside and outside, and even offered us Scottish treats. As for Robin, he was a historian, geographer, geologist, cultural analyst and political commentator all rolled into one. Unlike most Road Scholar tours, where formal lectures are presented by different experts over the course of the journey, Robin gave just one such lecture on Scottish history at the beginning. After that, he provided extensive information and commentaries (and relevant music!) on all aspects of Scottish history and culture, while we were traveling on the bus. This gave us more time for the “field trips.” In addition, Robin always tailored his comments specifically to the site we were about to visit, thus preparing us well for the experience. Everything we saw was worth a visit, and my only regret is that at times I would have liked to stay a little longer before moving on.
I arrived in Glasgow one day ahead of time, and stayed for two extra nights in Edinburgh. If I were to do this trip again, I would have arrived in Glasgow two days before the beginning of the tour, and stayed four extra nights in Edinburgh afterwards. Beautiful Scotland is well worth three weeks of my time!

As it is for many people, visiting Scotland was a long-time dream for me, and this program certainly helped me to realize this dream. Christina and Linda were wonderful leaders that made this trip even more enjoyable than I thought it would be. Once we left Glasgow, the tour really picked up, and we had amazing experiences— enjoying the beauty of the Highlands, visiting castles, walking with history at Culloden, and observing sheepdogs at work, even holding a 6-day-old puppy! I loved this trip!

The Best of Scotland was truly the "best"! We learned so much, laughed so much and loved every minute of this adventure. Our group leader (Medea), instructor (Alasdair) and driver (Stevie) were also the best. The itinerary, experiences and people (including our wonderful fellow travelers) made this a trip we'll always remember and made Scotland a country we look forward to traveling to again. Well done, Road Scholar!

"Best of Scotland" was an excellent trip.
It was our sixth Road Scholar "Learning Adventure." As with previous ones, we found our group of 27 fellow adventurers to be "kindred spirits" who were good company and eager to learn.
While the leaders of our trips have always been very good, our group leader, Medea, who handled all logistics, and our Scottish content expert, Alasdair, who informed us with many presentations and delighted us with his humor, were extraordinary.
We knew almost nothing about Scotland when we started the trip, and we do not have cultural ties to the country, so everything was new to us, and we ended up learning an enormous amount.
We found in Scotland two very interesting - and very different - cities, some charming small towns, and many historic churches, palaces, and castles. And though I must admit that sometimes my eyes glazed over and I lost track of whether it was the Earl of Elsewhere or some No-account Viscount who lived there, in those cases there was usually a beautiful garden to distract me. The bus rides were through gorgeous moors, mountains, and rolling countryside whose inhabitants included those iconic and adorable Highland Cows or "Heelan' Coos." As we were traveling in mid-May, there were plenty of adorable baby critters. Our great driver, named Stevie, even tutored us in a wee bit of Scottish so that we would know the difference between a skiver and a bampot.
We chose to fly into Edinburgh several days before the start of the Road Scholar program and to take the train to Glasgow the day that the program began. We very strongly encourage others to do the same. Edinburgh is so charming and has so much to offer, and the program spends only one day there. With our pre-program stay and an extra day that we added at the end, we were in Edinburgh (staying at the same hotel that Road Scholar used, which turned out to be a good choice) on our own for four days, and we could have easily spent a few more.

This Scotland trip was a treat from beginning to end. Gorgeous country full of fascinating history; the bus rides from location to location fly by looking at the scenery and the beautiful light on the hills and mountains; the impressive palaces and castles; the pride of the Scots in their country.

This was the longest RS trip we have taken, with the largest group, but by far it was a trip not to be missed. Our RS facilitator, Medea, was excellent in keeping things moving smoothly, making sure everyone was satisfied, and keeping us in good spirits with her always happy personality. Alasdair, our guide, made sure that we had a good grasp of the history of the areas we traveled through, and a framework for other experts to fill in. He was both a good lecturer and comedian when necessary.
This review would not be complete without mention of our bus driver, Stevie (mentioned in other reviews of this same program). Stevie moved us from place to place with ease, introducing us to Irn-Bru, shortbread, and sweet treats.
A well deserved thank you to the RS crew for this program - Medea, Alasdair and Stevie.

Loved the trip - our guide Margret was incredibly knowledgeable. She went out of her way to find out what we each had interest in before we started and then research them if she didn't already know the answers. She also pointed out these individual points of interests as we traveled and fit them into the program. It made the whole experience feel very personal to each of us.
The logistics chief was consistent preforming his duties, he was well mannered yet fun. He kept us in line and on time throughout. He took what seemed like exemplary care of an individual who took ill and needed hospitalization. He did this without disruption of the tour even though the couple had to leave the group.
The bus and driver - the driver was very professional and had great driving skills. The bus was also taken care of always clean and ready for the day.
The trip - I enjoyed the schedule and all sites we visited. I do wish we had more time at Rosslyn Chapel. That was of particular interest to me. Also we went to an alternate site Fort George which was really fascinating, lots of great history there and fit nicely into our program. It was a fabulous change from visiting another castle. Keep it in the program as a regular stop.
This was my first Road Scholar trip and won't be my last! Incredible!

I am enthralled with Scotland the place and the people are delightful.
I look forward to travel with Road Scholar tours again and again. Thank you so much to Mike, Robin, Media and wee Stevie. Thank you as well to all my companion travelers from Canada, Maine, Texas, Pennsylvania and NC. I hope to see you on more adventures with RS.

Can I give this program 10 stars? It was twice as good as I had hoped for. It started at orientation with Margaret's syllabus. On our daily travels, we covered everything from the Mesolithic period through the Romans, Vikings, Gaels, Stewarts, Mary Queen of Scots, ... the Jacobites, the Clearances, all the way to Brexit. Each subject was covered as we reached the site. The bus was our classroom, and Margaret served as a professor of Scottish history. Reading the Road Scholar itinerary gives you the details of the program but not the feeling you get when you experience it in person. Neil, our Group Leader, kept everything running smoothly and was great at adding sparkle and humor at just the right times. Stevie, our bus driver, was excellent in getting us in and out of tight places. Tulloch Castle Hotel is not to be missed, but every hotel was well located, comfortable, and served great 3-course dinners. After all the castles, Culross was very moving because our guide explained how the villagers were hard-working people who led desperate lives. Rannoch Moor and Glen Coe are awesome. I highly recommend this program to anyone who has an interest in Scotland's geology, history and/or Clans.
