New England Maritime Sampler
Program Number: 11077
Essex Shipbuilding (MA) (Images of America)
For three centuries, shipbuilding flourished in Essex, a small village wrapped around a shallow tidal estuary that flows into Ipswich Bay. From sturdy little Chebacco boats to the tough but graceful fishing schooners that plied the Grand Banks, Essex vessels became known throughout the maritime world as swift and strong fishermen, and Essex shipbuilding became synonymous with craftsmanship of the highest order. More than four thousand ships slid down the ways destined for ports such as Gloucester, Boston, and New York.
By the middle of the twentieth century, however, the industry had vanished and this extraordinary chapter in American maritime history was closed. Essex Shipbuilding recalls an era when dozens of vessels in different stages of construction lined the Essex River and the shipyard gangs worked six days a week, year-round, in any weather. Featuring the photograph collection of Dana A. Story, Essex Shipbuilding illustrates the firms of A.D. Story and Tarr & James, who built the famous racing schooners Mayflower, Columbia, and Gertrude L. Thebaud, and the high-lining fishermen Elsie and Adventure. Essex Shipbuilding also depicts these vessels at sea-fishing, racing, or pursuing more unusual work, from Arctic exploration to naval service in both world wars to rumrunning during Prohibition.
Lone Voyager
Like countless Gloucester fishermen before and since, Howard Blackburn and Tom Welch were trawling for halibut on the Newfoundland banks in an open dory in 1883 when a sudden blizzard separated them from their mother ship. Alone on the empty North Atlantic, they battled towering waves and frozen spray to stay afloat. Welch soon succumbed to exposure, and Blackburn did the only thing he could: He rowed for shore. He rowed five days without food or water, with his hands frozen to the oars, to reach the coast of Newfoundland. Yet his tests had only begun.
So begins Joe Garland's extraordinary account of the hero fisherman of Gloucester. Incredibly, though Blackburn lost his fingers to his icy misadventure, he went on to set a record for swiftest solo sailing voyage across the Atlantic that stood for decades. Lone Voyager is a Homeric saga of survival at sea and a thrilling portrait of the world's most fabled fishing port in the age of sail. (Product description)
The Perfect Storm
Meteorologists called the storm that hit North America's eastern seaboard in October 1991 a "perfect storm" because of the rare combination of factors that created it. For everyone else, it was perfect hell. In The Perfect Storm, author Sebastian Junger conjures for the reader the meteorological conditions that created the "storm of the century" and the impact the storm had on many of the people caught in it. Chief among these are the six crew members of the swordfish boat the Andrea Gail, all of whom were lost 500 miles from home beneath roiling seas and high waves. Working from published material, radio dialogues, eyewitness accounts, and the experiences of people who have survived similar events, Junger attempts to re-create the last moments of the Andrea Gail as well as the perilous high-seas rescues of other victims of the storm.
Like a Greek drama, The Perfect Storm builds slowly and inexorably to its tragic climax. The book weaves the history of the fishing industry and the science of predicting storms into the quotidian lives of those aboard the Andrea Gail and of others who would soon find themselves in the fury of the storm. Junger does a remarkable job of explaining a convergence of meteorological and human events in terms that make them both comprehensible and unforgettable. (Amazon.com)
The Hungry Ocean
She's smart, hard-working and good at what she does, though sometimes she wishes she had a life. Greenlaw is captain of the Hannah Boden, sister ship to the Andrea Gail, the sword-fishing boat whose disappearance was described with agonizing verisimilitude in Sebastian Junger's bestseller, The Perfect Storm. Greenlaw tells a comparatively quotidian tale, "the true story of a real, and typical, sword-fishing trip, from leaving the dock to returning." Not trying to compete with Junger's operatic tale of death on the high seas, Greenlaw deals with stormy personalities rather than with bad weather. She rounds out the story with her gimlet-eyed description of a captain's biggest headache after nature itself: the crew. Racism, drug use, baffling illnesses: these are all elements of a 30-day journey for six people crammed aboard a 100-ft. boat designed less for human comfort than to carry the 50,000 pounds or more of fish it will eventually take on. But Greenlaw picks her sailors carefully and, through her own example, inspires a fierce loyalty among the men such as the one who extracted his own abscessed tooth rather than return to shore ("In my experience," she notes, "very few men are willing to pull their own teeth"). Greenlaw's narrative should foster an abiding respect in anyone who has tossed a swordfish steak on the grill, and it is certain to induce jaw-dropping admiration among personnel managers everywhere. (Publishers Weekly)
The Last Fish Tale
Starred Review. Bestselling author Kurlansky (Cod; The Big Oyster) provides a delightful, intimate history and contemporary portrait of the quintessential northeastern coastal fishing town: Gloucester, Mass., on Cape Anne. Illustrated with his own beautifully executed drawings, Kurlansky's book vividly depicts the contemporary tension between the traditional fishing trade and modern commerce, which in Gloucester means beach-going tourists. One year ago, a beach preservation group enraged fishermen by seeking to harvest 105 acres of prime fishing ground for sand to deposit on the shoreline. Wealthy yacht owners compete with fishermen for prime dockage, driving up prices. Fishermen also contend with federal limits on their catches in an effort to maintain sustainable fisheries. But while cod are protected from extinction, the fishermen are not. Some boats must go 100 or more miles out to sea—a danger for small boats with few crew members. Tragedies abound, while one, that of the swordfish boat Andrea Gail, documented by Sebastian Junger in A Perfect Storm, brought even more tourists to Gloucester. (Publishers Weekly)

I truly got my "moneys worth" on this trip. Way to go Road Scholar! Many meals out at different local restaurants and fabulous caterer. Wonderful excursions by 5 different boats.

The program provides an in-depth exposure to the Cape Ann area through road trips, instructors with a deep and varied knowledge of the area, and 5 boat trips to learn about different aspects of the water world which is so important to the residents of Cape Ann.

Who knew? I am from the Midwest and was blown away by how much I learned about fishing, the rocky coast lines/coves, the commitment and dangers of being a fisherman, and the unpredictably of the sea. The size of the group was just right; we got to know each other and participants were interesting and kind. Our guide was organized, prepared and fun! Did I say that the food was outstanding? Order Halibut every day; we never got tired of it.
— Review left July 28, 2024
This program is so good, I just finished doing it for the second time. Loved the Rockport / Gloucester area, the many boat rides including a whale watch, dining by the water, interesting lectures. Fun time, particularly for solo travelers. Don't miss it!
— Review left July 17, 2024
Wow! That’s all I can say. We enjoyed every minute of our trip. From our knowledgeable leader, Ruth Bennett, leader- in-training, Teri Contino, and instructor, Jim McAllister.
We met folks from all walks of life. Ruth kept us on track and Jim taught us, while being highly entertaining.
I also must take a moment to address our bus driver, Sal. What a great guy. He has unending patience and is such a funny guy. He can maneuver a bus and knows the ins and outs of the area.
I would be remiss not to mention the folks we met along the way. From Sam Parisi explaining his views on fishing in Gloucester, the captains and crews aboard each ship, the instructors on the art colony and Essex shipping.
The weather was absolutely perfect that week. We loved every type of vessel we were on.
The whales were very cooperative and we were so excited to see them.
I had been wanting to go to Salem for the longest time, so we spent the afternoon there. So much history to absorb and since it wasn’t Season, the crowds were manageable. We rode the train back to Rockport from Salem, a first train ride for me.
We returned tired but so glad we went!
All in all, we can’t brag about this trip enough. Thank you Road Scholar.
Shannon and Roger C.

On this trip we got to board 5 different sea craft and see the area in full. The shore and ocean became one for me.
— Review left June 23, 2024
Spectacular scenery, organization, and group leader! Our group was cohesive and even the weather was wonderful. Speakers, bus driver, and topics were meaningful and engaging. I highly recommend this trip!
— Review left June 22, 2024
It is a terrific trip for those who live near and far—we learned so much about the North Shore of Massachusetts. Cape Ann and all surrounding towns are fascinating. It is a nice contrast to Cape Cod, with a totally different vibe and a great living history. Ruth, our group leader, was outstanding, as were all the expert speakers. They added to the depth of understanding of this excursion. Super fun and educational!

Excellent program with with an exceptional group leader- Ms. Lili Murad.
Comfortable accommodations and enjoyable boat tours around Cape Ann.
Interesting lectures about local artists and Gloucester fishing industry.
— Review left August 26, 2023
This program offers depth about the fishing and shipbuilders on Cape Ann as well as education about the area's role in nurturing American art and artists. It’s an addition to my knowledge about US history I greatly vale.
— Review left August 25, 2023
This was my seventh and favorite Road Scholar program! Our leader and the special speakers were well informed and provided interesting and thorough knowledge of their fields of interest. All of my expectations were met; another great Road Scholar investment of my time and money.
— Review left August 18, 2023
Boat rides were wonderful; gorgeous "fishing village " setting. Cape Ann Museum had lovely artwork. Catered food brought to the hotel was awful. But the meals elsewhere, especially at the Antique Ann restaurant, were excellent. If you love being on the water, this is a good trip.
— Review left August 13, 2023
The New England Sampler program was fantastic! The activities and the field trips were super fun!
— Review left July 29, 2023
Having grown up and living in the greater Boston area I didn't expect to learn so much from so many superb speakers and see so many beautiful places from the water and on land. The restaurants and food were extraordinarily excellent and overall this program far exceeded my expectations.
— Review left July 28, 2023
I thoroughly enjoyed he Rockport Maritime experience. Our group leader Lili Murad was kind, intelligent, interesting and so knowledgable on the areas we toured. She was a wealth of information and kept us engaged throughout the trip. I follow a gluten free diet and she made sure I was accomodated for every meal on the trip. She truly was fabulous. The people on the tour were lovely and friendly people. We had a great time together. I highly endorse this vacation.
— Review left June 23, 2023
Terrific trip. From the outings on the water, the food, the group leader, the other participants, this was a great mix of ingredients, and we thoroughly enjoyed the program. Were sorry to see it end but took wonderful experiences and friendships home with us. We went in mid-June and that turned out to be a great time to go.
— Review left June 18, 2023
If you like the New England states and boat rides, this is the trip for you. Road Scholar takes participants on a water ride each day! The schooner sail around Gloucester harbor is 1.5 hours with the opportunity to raise the sails. The whale watch is 4 hours and the crew seems to know where to find whales. The river cruise out of Essex takes participants through channels of the river out to the ocean with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. The scenic cruise out of Salem takes participants up the coast with distant views of the coast and the opportunity to study the topography of the coast. The lobster boat provides an up close view of Gloucester harbor, a demonstration of pulling up and emptying lobster traps and the opportunity to examine a live lobster. Getting to and from these boat rides gives participants scenic views of the area and the water from land.
I enjoyed all of the boat rides, the expert speakers, and the exceptional educational content of this program.

This truly was a Maritime Sampler of this beautiful area Cape Ann.Unfortunately Mother Nature had other plans for our Schooner voyage, but Peabody-Essex Museum was a fantastic fill-in.Our Art walk was also rained out, sowe had a lecture on the bus which I wish could have been rescheduled as an evening orWednesday afternoon event.Whale watch was very worthwhile as was the Essex river cruise.Speakers Jim,Sam,tour guide Debra and driverJim were fantastic. My tavelcompanion and Idid not stay for the lobster cruise because we wanted to catch an early flight out.Perhps,it would be better to have the lobster cruise andmore lecures on the last day and then send people on their way the next day.We wish we would have known ahead of time about the bus ride to Logan for $9,instead of our expensive limo ride. But,all in all a wonderful, learning experience. Thanks to all.

This was my third Road Scholar trip, it was absolutely wonderful. The variety of Maritime adventures was perfect for the week. I could not have asked for better Lunch and Dinner menus.

Five different boating experiences in five days, delicious meals, fishermen and the artists who painted them, seafood, sunsets, island scenery and beautiful Cape Ann in the summer…what could be better? This is a perfectly paced, well organized tour with a knowledgeable and seasoned tour leader. You can’t go wrong with the maritime sampler. Every day brought a new adventure.
— Review left July 30, 2022
The Maritime Sampler is a fabulous program. I highly recommended it for all, especially those people who are unfamiliar with New England and perhaps have never been to the ocean.
— Review left July 29, 2022
A terrific program. Every day on the water: rebuilt schooner in Gloucester harbor, whale-watching in Massachusetts Bay, harbor tour from Salem to Marblehead, ride along the Essex River and estuary---all with knowledgeable guides and instructors. Walk through the artists' colony area of Rockport with a knowledgeable guide. Talks from fishermen, popular historians, etc. Delightful and insightful. Strongly recommended.
— Review left July 21, 2022
This is a great tour. I learned many new things in a fun setting.
— Review left July 17, 2022
This trip was better than expected. My wife and I learned more than we thought and the interaction on the trip with everyone was just right. We had enough free time to do a few things on our own. Ruth Bennett, our leader, was very professional and great about thinking on the fly. The 5 different sea trips was better than expected. We especially liked the trip on the tall ship, and the whale watch.
— Review left July 5, 2022
Really great way to experience coastal New England from both the shore and on the water! Highly recommended, particularly if you are not from the area.

This is a fascinating program in a very interesting part of Massachusetts. The residents of Rockport, where we stayed, were kind and friendly, seemed pleased we were enjoying their town. Each boat trip (there were 5) was the second unique and the guides were great. We saw several whales, we saw many varieties of beautiful birds, we sailed on a famous wooden schooner, all so interesting. We ate great seafood. Best of all was our sensational group leader, Lili, who accommodated everyone’s needs, whose humor made us laugh, whose ability to bring great cohesion to our group was just superb. Don’t hesitate, just sign up and go!
