Breakfast:

Morning:
On the banks of a northern arm of the Mekong, My Tho, which translates as "fragrant herb", is where vistors come to discover the beauty of the delta. It's a quiet, prosperous city of about 100,000 inhabitants, famous for its many fruit orchards, gardens and the huge rice fields that surround it. The climate is warm and pleasant all year round. We disembark the boat and transfer by coach to Vinh Trang Pagoda. We continue to Cai Dai temple and the noodle factory.

The soil of Vinh Long is enriched by silt deposits, making it ideal for growing mandarins and other citrus fruits. Life is organized around the water - houses on stilts, hawkers on boats, and hundreds of small crafts crisscrossing the river in all directions.

Famous for its horticulture (it has many varieties of fabulously exotic flowers), Sa Dec was known as the "Garden of Cochin Chine" during colonial times.

Phnom Penh is renowned for its traditional Khmer and French-influenced architecture. We take a step back to ancient times by exploring the Royal Palace and the Silver Pagoda. Afternoon:
We arrive at Kampong Tralach and visit its wonderful Vihara belonging to Wat Kampong Tralach Leu pagoda. To reach it, we cross some gorgeous stretches of emerald rice paddies. The Vihara dates back to early last century. It was probably built on an older site, as indicated by the laterite foundations. The Vihara is home to some outstanding mural paintings. Standing by itself in the middle of rice fields, it is a modest pagoda that receives very few visitors. Its isolation may well be its undoing, as was the case for Wat Tani Pagoda in the province of Kampot.

This region is famous for its pottery-ware, which has retained the same style for centuries and is produced in quantities sufficient enough to supply the entire country. The village has other products to enjoy such as that produced from the Thnot tree - a mellow tasting, caramel-colored sugar sold in large cakes and palm wine.

Upon our arrival in Siem Reap, we check in and have some time at leisure. We then head out to the Angkor National Museum, where we have an introduction to the temples and art surrounding us. We gain an understanding of the religions and beliefs of the ancient Khmer empire.
Dinner:
Dinner at a local restaurant.
Evening:
At leisure.
Day

Sunrise at Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, Free Time
Location:
Siem Reap
Meals:
B,L
Stay:
Tara Angkor Hotel
Activity Note
Must be able to walk on uneven terrain. Climbing is required on stone steps, sometimes without railings.
Breakfast:
We rise early this morning to take in the breathtaking beauty of Angkor Wat at sunrise. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Angkor Archaeological Park contains the magnificent remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to the 15th century. The best-preserved temple at the site, Angkor Wat is also the only temple to have remained a significant religious center since its construction. It was built to embody the Hindu tradition – specifically dedicated to the god Vishnu – but gradually shifted to become a primarily Buddhist site as the official religion of the Khmer Empire changed. We return to the hotel for breakfast.
Morning:
After breakfast, we explore Angkor Thom, the last and most-enduring capital city of the Khmer empire. Established in the late twelfth century by King Jayavarman VII, at the center of the city is the mesmerizing temple of Bayon.
Lunch:
At a local restaurant. Coffee, tea and bottled water included; additional beverages available for purchase.
Afternoon:
After enjoying some free time, we go off the beaten path and visit an elementary school, where we will be introduced to the educational system of Cambodia (subject to school holidays and exam schedules). Road Scholar makes a donation to this school.
Dinner:
At own arrangements. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions.
Evening:
At leisure.
Day

Activity Note
Participants must be able to get in and out of our motorcoach throughout the day, interspersed with periods of sitting and standing, in hot and humid weather.
Breakfast:
At the hotel.
Morning:
We continue our discovery of the Angkor Temples with a visit to Ta Prohm, the Jungle Temple. Unlike most of the temples of Angkor, Ta Prohm has been largely left to ruins. With its dynamic interaction between nature and man-made art, this atmospheric temple is a favorite for many - some may feel a little like Indiana Jones or Lara Croft (which was filmed here) as they pick through the rubble. We later visit the temple Banteay Srei, the Citadel of Women. This pink sandstone temple was built in the latter half of the 10th century by Rajendravarman II and Jayavaraman V. The carvings of Banteay Srei are among the oldest and most intricate that we will see.
Lunch:
At a local restaurant. Coffee, tea and bottled water included; additional beverages available for purchase.
Afternoon:
This afternoon we visit the Cambodian Landmine Museum. We also visit the studio of a local artist, where we learn about Cambodian art. Afterwards, we take the coach back to Siem Reap for some free time to explore on our own.
Dinner:
At a local restaurant, we have our final dinner together with a "farewell to Vietnam and Cambodia" drink included. Coffee, tea and bottled water are also provided; additional beverages are available for purchase.
Evening:
Say farewell to new Road Scholar friends. Pack and prepare for departures home tomorrow.

Angkor Wat & the Mekong River trip is a great way to explore the history & culture of both Cambodia & Vietnam. The path from the Khmer Empire to present day is long & complex, not to mention our own involvement in their recent history. Traveling on a small boat down the Mekong River offers a more intimate view of life along the delta & a great way to get to know your fellow travelers.

This trip from start to finish was more than I could have known to expect. Yes, the education was superb and the places we visited were unlike any in my previous experiences and the good organization and planning added to it all. It was all made possible though by the superb trip guides who bring their all to making the trip a most special experience in every way.

This was a wonderful adventure through a truly magical land.

Fabulous experience. The guides were fun, informative, and shared personal histories that enhanced the program. Educational lectures were to notch. The cruise on the boat was wonderful--great crew, great food, great scenery. Temples of Hindu, Bhuddist, and Cao Dai religions, both old and new, increased appreciation of the history and culture of the two countries.

First Road Scholar trip. Very well planned and all participants well cared for. Programs planned with good balance of scheduled and free time. Anyone contemplating this trip needs to be aware that it is taxing in that people with balance difficulty will have challenges getting off and on the shuttle boats and there are fairly long walks in the temple grounds. Do not ignore your heat tolerance—it was very hot and muggy 24/7. We happened to hit a very hot week at the end of March. Know that only your small cabin will be air conditioned on the boat—none of the common areas have A/C. Yet the majority said they really enjoyed the week on the boat, as did we. Food and staff were great. The group leader, Mr. Man, was a pro and could anticipate individual needs. The mandatory local guides were of variable quality, always the case on tours. Food was very good and safe for western palate, although you could also be more adventuresome. The hotels while not on the boat were great. Nice that the group is small which resulted in meaningful interactions and friendships. Overall-Solid 4/5, close to 5/5 if not for the extreme heat and lack of a common area with A/C on the boat.

A good program to gain an understanding of the Mekong region.

If you’re in good health and can take the heat, this is a trip of a lifetime. From the magical experience of watching Angkor Watt gradually appear at sunrise to gaining a deeper understanding of Cambodia and Vietnam from a comfortable river barge, this is a special adventure.

Loved all parts of this program: a great program leader and excellent history lecturers and site-specific guides; fascinating visits to museums, prisons, villages, markets, temples, pagodas, and more; and motoring up the Mekong River for 8 days on a charming boat with a very friendly and helpful crew. It was a real treat to learn so much about the histories and cultures of Vietnam and Cambodia, and modern-day life there.

We travel a lot on our own, but this was our first organized vacation. We very very impressed by the high quality of the organization, the guides and the actvities, educational and otherwise, leading to a memorable experience. We saw and learned a great deal about the culture and history of Vietnam and Cambodia.

I came back from this trip 2 weeks ago. I am still digesting the entire adventure. The journey was well organized and geared towards everyone's learning comfort and safety. The ruins in Angor Wat were sensational and well appreciated. Our tour guides (Ton) were fantastic with a vast knowledge of the area we were in.
Accommodations aboard the river cruise were cozy with just 16 passengers. The chef prepared exceptional 5 course meals for lunch and dinner. Breakfast was enjoyed by all with individual orders.
All the passengers had a love of learning and whose company I enjoyed. I traveled by myself and was incorporated into the group with ease.
Only down side was the extreme heat and humidity, just be prepared.
We did had 4 passengers (me too)with Vietnam visa issues and had to do a rush job to get new visas which was expensive. I think Road Scholar should assist with this at the time of application to avoid problem in future.
I went to Hanoi and HaLang Bay before meeting with the group. I am glad I added this onto my trip.
I look forward to future trips with this company.

Our first Road Scholar tour was delightful. We have done a lot of traveling but this was special. Our group had a lot of first timers and it worked out great. The world has so much to offer if you choose to find it.

From the very first day in Saigon, this trip was spectacular! On our small barge, the Toum Teav, we were pampered by friendly, attentive staff, and the meals featuring traditional recipes were wonderful. Being able to disembark onto smaller boats allowed us to interact with locals in the small villages, and relaxing on the deck afterwards to watch the sunsets was a special highlight of the trip. We gained so much cultural knowledge and understanding, taking in the natural beauty of Vietnam and Cambodia and the kind and gentle people with the help of our tour guides and lecturers. I could go on and on about the value this trip provided for us, but you really need to experience all of the delights for yourself.

A dream come true as we watched the sun rise over Angkor Wat and toured the impressive structure, even climbing to the third level to get a fantastic view of the remains as well as the surrounding area. Life along the Mekong and Tanle Sap aboard Toum Tiou was fun and eye-opening, especially in the rainy season.

The Vietnam/Cambodia trip was exciting, educational and FUN. Met some really great fellow travelers, experienced new foods, learned so much about the history of the 2 countries & how resilient their people are. Everyone we met was friendly and enthused to see us. They need more visitor to help their tourist industry recover...so book a trip!

We thoroughly enjoyed this Road Scholar program. The itinerary is jam-packed which we appreciated given the distance we traveled to attend! Our trip leader, "Zoom", was wonderful and a great guide for countries he obviously loves. Vietnam and Cambodia opened our eyes to cultures which were exotic and historical, and offered many new-to-us experiences. Highly recommend this program.

Cruising the Mekong and Tonle Sap Rivers on the Toum Tiou boat is a wonderful way to become acquainted with Vietnam and Cambodia, seeing places where other, larger groups cannot stop. This tour gave me a sense of the two countries "off the beaten path".

This was a amazing, eye-opening experience. I learned that I didn't know much at all about Cambodia, and very little about Vietnam. The guides and organization of this program helped change all that. I was enriched tremendously by the experience. The guides and my fellow passengers were terrific. We all got along and everyone was considerate. I highly recommend this tour.

Seeing is believing the 'The Wonders of Cambodia and Vietnam'. From the amazing temples with their intricate details and sculptures to the bustling, colorful markets, visiting a home in a floating fishing community or that of a palm sugar producer, observing excited children in an elementary school and also viewing the sobering war museums. There is so much to take in. Our guide, Bros, was there for everyone every step of our adventure. We walked a lot, but were able to rest and watch the scenery while cruising down the rivers in the barge. Food was great! It was truly a "wonder"ful adventure.

Angkor Wat was as expected— spectacular. The trip on the Mekong River was outstanding and visiting small villages along the way was a great experience. One of the best RS trips we’ve taken. Highly recommend!

This was a fascinating trip down the Mekong, learning about Cambodia and Vietnam. The history, food, cultures were all fascinating. The accommodations on the ship (barge) were better than I had expected. The staff on our boat could not do enough for us. The time went by too quickly and we were left wanting to learn more about this part of the world.

Angkor Wat & the Mekong River: The Wonders of Cambodia & Vietnam. A Great Journey and Experience.
— Review left January 30, 2023
This program more than met my hopes and expectations for a 'bucket list' trip to include Angkor Wat. There was a wonderful balance between peaceful interludes on the Mekong and busy days in the cities and between hard information about the "American War", the Khmer Rouge and the continuing problem of landmines and unexploded ordnance and the visits to villages and towns specializing in fascinating crafts, to amazing markets, modern temples and of course, to the ancient temple ruins surrounding Siem Reap. Do not try to do this trip if you are mobility impaired -- it's fast paced and the boat is not equipped for anyone who can't climb a ladder or spiral stairs! City hotels were good, accommodations on the boat a bit worn but adequate. Great food, excellent group leader Kong and inspiring guides. Well worth it - I could never have managed so much in such a compact two weeks without feeling very stressed on my own. The dance party put on by the Cambodian crew of the tour boat showed just what special, kind people they were -- they got us all dancing.

Traveling through Vietnam and Cambodia was a wonderful learning and cultural experience!
My overall memory of our days is the spirit of the people we interacted with, who were friendly, kind, and always helpful.
We enjoyed lots of smiles and the desire to share with us their hopes and enthusiasm for the future!
Our guides were amazing as mentors, directors, and advisors! Zoom was with us from the very beginning to the final moments and always providing the best support. Kun joined us as we entered Cambodia, and then Vireak upon arrival in Siem Reap. They were all three extremely knowledgeable in their areas, entertaining, fun, and the kind of individuals you would want on any trip!

Wow. This is the word to describe this trip. The schedual is jammed packed. Need to be in good physical shape to keep up..Kong was our leader and guide..he made sure everyone was kept up to date on the day’s itinerary if you needed a little extra help with the steps Kong was there to offer a steady hand..all the accommodations were 4 star. The food was authentic .the barge was awesome felt like the “African Queen” type.We were on the barge boat for 5 nights, getting off at various stops along the Mekong River. We saw the real Vietnam and Cambodia..I’d recommend the trip to those who like adventure..

This trip to Vietnam and Cambodia were very interesting. The tour leaders are the best I have ever seen and so knowledgeable. Be aware when Road Scholar shows the activity level. They are right on with the level, because I have knee problem and the activity level really pushed me beyond my limits. Not Road Scholar problem but mine for not paying attention to the activity level. But I still loved the trip.

We thoroughly enjoyed this trip. Both Vietnam and Cambodia are fascinating, friendly and welcoming places, and seeing it largely through excursions off of a boat on the river was great fun and a real experience. The food was great, the boat staff very friendly and accommodating and the visits to the main cities (Saigon, Phnom Penh and Siem Reap) were also eye opening cultural experiences. Despite being the hot summer, and the rainy season, it left us wanting to see more like northern Vietnam and other parts of SE Asian

This program gave me such an in-depth knowledge of the county's history and insight to the Khmer people. It was an incredible two week journey through the country. The ruins, the food, the river cruise, the temples, the small villages, the local people, our group leader, and much more make this RS program a highly recommended, unforgettable 5 Star experience.

This was a great trip..Angkor Was was superb. Our guide,Bros, was excellent.
We went just before the coronavirus outbreak and whatever concerns we had about it were addressed by Road Scholar throughout the trip. We felt VERY SAFE.

This was an amazing trip with much of it taking place on boats! We had seven days on our "mother ship" the Toum Teav, and many smaller vessels to take us on shore excursions. Sailing down the Tonle Gap River and the Mekong River to Saigon was a magical experience.

Outstanding program. Our leader was informed, kind and considerate. He willingly shared his knowledge and expertise in an easy going and congenial way
The experience on the boat down the Tonle Sap and then the Mekong from Cambodia into Vietnam (which was effectively private as only the RS program participants and the staff were there) - was spectacular.
Lots and lots of active land based excursions every day and then quiet elegant evenings on the boat. The food was great as well
We highly recommend the visit

This was a great trip. It was a wonderful opportunity to visit and learn all about the culture of Vietnam and Cambodia and to learn their perspectives on all that has happened in the region during the Vietnam War and in the ensuing years. It was eye-opening!

My wife and I are very experienced global travelers, and we both agree that this is among the best tour related trips we have ever taken. Our guide (Bros) is a real pro. He handled the logistics of the trip with skill and ease. As a person, he is engaging and delightful. In short, it was a privilege to travel with him and to learn from him. Furthermore, he has clear ethical commitments and concern for the people we encountered along the way. I would recommend this trip to anyone without reservation.

This is a fabulous trip. Learning about Cambodia and Vietnam was eye opening. The field trips to temples, museums, and pagodas were incredible and the Mekong boat ride was a joy - very comfortable with good air conditioning (essential!). The hotels were classy and very comfortable. The trip went from countryside and river to sophisticated (relatively) Saigon. The heat was pretty crushing during most of the trip (late March) so take this into consideration if you choose this trip.

Our tour of Vietnam and Cambodia via ship on the Mekong River was wonderful. We saw many things that we would not have been able to see if touring on our own. The tour leader and the other guides were very knowledgeable and welcoming. Highly recommended.

This is fabulous experience. Be forewarned that Cambodian sensibilities about female dress are conservative. Shorts and skirts should come all the way to the knees, and shirts should have sleeves - short sleeves are OK, just not sleeveless.
