Duration
3 days
Join Giles Ramsay for a lively journey into Shakespeare’s world, where theatrical rivalries, fascinating contemporaries and centuries of stage history reveal new perspectives on the playwright and his enduring legacy. Drawing on his expertise as a theatre educator and course leader at London’s V&A, Giles brings the drama, personalities and stories behind the stage to life. Go beyond Shakespeare’s plays to explore the world in which he lived: religious conflict and espionage in Elizabethan England, the rise of commercial theatre and the fascinating story of Christopher Marlowe, the poet and suspected spy. Discover how Shakespeare became a successful theatrical entrepreneur, how his language guides actors’ performances and how different actors and directors have interpreted his work over the centuries.
Best of all, you'll...
  • Gain an understanding of how Shakespeare’s work has been shaped by changing political, religious and theatrical contexts, from the medieval church to the reign of James I.
  • Recognize how actors and directors can interpret Shakespeare’s language differently, and how rhythm, imagery, pauses and emphasis influence a performance.
  • Trace how Shakespeare’s reputation and the performance of his plays have evolved from the Restoration to the modern stage, through figures such as David Garrick, Henry Irving, Laurence Olivier and Judi Dench.
