Art and its influences can often be linked to the historic moments happening at the time of a piece’s creation. Join art historian Matthew Palczynski for his latest online series examining the art of a specific decade. In this lecture, we will take a look at the impactful events of the 1910s. The art of the 1910s offers a glimpse into a wildly unpredictable decade. The sinking of the Titanic (1912), World War One (1914-18), antitrust complexities, the women’s suffrage movement and other historical milestones dominated headlines and changed the course of American culture. Meanwhile, the iconic Armory Show exhibition (1913) inspired a presidential response and, along with the “291 Gallery” (1905-17), changed the direction of modernist American art indefinitely.
