Online Lecture: The Earthquake That Shook the World Series — A Disaster Averted

Few major earthquakes have been captured live on national television, but such was the case with the Loma Prieta Earthquake on October 17, 1989 — often called the "World Series Earthquake" because it struck during Game 3 between the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland A's. In this lecture, author and historian James Dalessandro shares the little-known story of how a radical new fire suppression system, designed by Deputy Fire Chief Frank Blackburn and activated just six days before the quake, prevented a repeat of the 1906 disaster that once leveled most of the city.
