At a Glance

In Renaissance Venice, women, whether of noble birth or from the wealthy middle class, were primarily wives and mothers. Their social lives were constrained by rules set by institutions, but they wielded significant influence through the strategic use of their dowries for economic investments. This fortified their familial roles and contributed to their standing within the city's social fabric. The 16th century witnessed the emergence of another distinct category of women, the Courtesans. These women harnessed their artistic talents and beauty to attract wealthy patrons and found success with economic independence while garnering general respect. This lecture explores the intertwined dynamics of nobles and courtesans, featuring figures such as Caterina Corner, Morosina Morosini, Bianca Cappello, Veronica Franco, Gaspara Stampa and others.
