This presentation explores how Juneteenth is so much more than a holiday. Professor Brown will show how freedom celebrations like Juneteenth serve as a powerful educational space not found in a traditional classroom — a joyous way to tell the stories and histories of African Americans from a community perspective. He'll unfold how Juneteenth celebrations help address racial issues and tell stories often neglected in K-12 curriculum. Song, dance, poetry and art offer a powerful capacity to provide knowledge that children don't receive at school. These June 19th annual celebrations are an expression of history that serve to affirm and humanize the experiences of African Americans, where children are provided a sorely-needed space to engage and express themselves in ways they are not able to in school, and that serve as a vehicle to support and provide resources to families and communities.
