After you enroll, we’ll ask you to provide or update your personal information and preferences, which includes your health information, lodging and meal preferences for your program.

A yellow fever vaccination original certificate is required for entry into Tanzania. If you are unable to receive the vaccination for medical reasons, you will need to provide a vaccination original waiver issued by your physician (will not accept a photocopy). An attached document at the end of this booklet provides further information on these certificate/waiver.

A passport is required for this program. It must be valid for at least 6 months after your return date.

This information about travel documents pertains to participants holding U.S. passports. Non-U.S. citizens should refer to their country's requirements to ensure they have the necessary documentation for travel.

Tanzania

• Your passport must have 2 blank passport page(s) for entry/exit visas in this country.

• A travel visa is required and it must be obtained in advance.

• The cost of this visa is not included in the cost of your trip.

• We strongly recommend that you use the services of our designated visa service provider Passport Visas Express. You can access the details and review costs by visiting the website for Road Scholar participants at Passport Visa Express.

Please note: A paper or e-visa for Tanzania must be secured prior to program departure. Please allow several weeks of processing time; processing can take up to 35 business days so we currently advise applying at least 6 weeks in advance. Although available, visa-on-arrival is not recommended. NOTE: Due to bilateral agreements between Tanzania and America, American nationals who wish to come for such purposes like holiday/tourism, visiting friends and relatives or attending a conference are entitled to a Multiple Entry Visa instead of an Ordinary Visa—even if they are coming for a single entry. Please note that the Tanzanian Multiple Entry Visa may be issued with a validity of maximum 12 months. However, the maximum stay duration is three months. Contacts needed for this visa are in the Program Notes Section of this booklet.

Kenya

Please note: A single-entry Electronic Travel Authorization ETA for Kenya must be secured prior to program departure. Please allow several weeks of processing time. Although available, visa-on-arrival is not recommended. NOTE: The Kenyan ETA is only valid for three months after issue. Participants need to hold off on applying for this ETA until three months prior to their program start date. Contacts needed for this ETA are in the Program Notes Section of this booklet.

Kenya: As of May 2023, travelers will no longer be required to show proof of vaccination, COVID-19 passport/certificate or COVID-19 tests to enter Kenya. However, on arrival if you are showing flu like symptoms, you could possibly be requested to take a test on-site (at your own cost) in Kenya. Tanzania: As of May 2023, travelers are no longer required to show proof of vaccination, COVID-19 passport/certificate or COVID-19 tests to enter Tanzania. However, for surveillance purposes Port Health Officials may perform COVID-19 rapid antigen tests to randomly selected travelers at arrival points of entry. YELLOW FEVER vaccine: please note that a yellow fever vaccine is REQUIRED because of travel in areas that have high risk of yellow fever transmission. Contact your physician prior to your program to determine if you may need the vaccine or a booster. You will need to bring with you the yellow fever vaccine certificate with proof of immunization. If your physician advises against your immunization for medical reasons, you MUST receive a signed waiver from your doctor. You will need the original, a photocopy will not be accepted. Failure to present the certificate or waiver may lead you being denied entry at Tanzanian border. Even with the waiver letter you still need to present yellow card (empty) at the border; please ask your doctor where to get empty card only. An attached document at the end of this booklet provides further information on the certificate / waiver.

If Road Scholar is arranging your air travel to and from the program, and you travel on the scheduled start and end dates, you’ll receive free round-trip transfers from the airport to the hotel.

Meet the group at Eka Hotel in Nairobi

Start of Trip:  Program begins with check-in at Nairobi hotel on Day 2 in the late evening. Meet your Group Leader on arrival or at breakfast on Day 3.

Getting to the site: Participants who are arriving prior to the program start date or whom have made their own flight arrangements are responsible for making their own way to the first program hotel. Taxis are available from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport – Nairobi (JKIA) to transfer to program hotel . The transfer should take approximately 25 minutes and cost between 35 – 50 USD (please check current exchange rate into KES). In the airport, please be sure to approach the official tables of taxi service companies and ignore solicitors in the terminal, as these people are often unlicensed and uninsured. Taxis will accept both local currency of Kenyan shillings (KES) as well as other global currencies (e.g. USD, Euros), and while tipping is customary for good service, it is not mandatory. If you are arriving in the evening, Road Scholar does not recommend you take a taxi. Getting to the site by train or bus: Trains or buses are not available.

Your trip ends on: Wednesday, February 24, 2027 in Nairobi at Eka Hotel

End of Trip: Program ends on Day 15 with late night transfers to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) for overnight flights back to the United States. Day rooms are available to all participants on Day 15.

Getting to the airport: Taxis to the NBO Nairobi Airport are available from your program hotel. The transfer should take approximately 15 minutes and cost between 35 – 50 USD (please check current exchange rate into KES). Please speak to hotel staff, ahead of time, to help you with these arrangements.

Information if you are purchasing your own airfare: Participants who have not purchased airfare through Road Scholar are responsible for making their own transfer arrangements to the first site at the beginning of the program, as well as from the last site at the end of the program. The Information Packet Road Scholar sends in advance of the program includes details needed to make your transfer arrangements. If you wish to purchase airfare through Road Scholar, please call (800) 241-1404. Please note: In the unlikely event Road Scholar must make changes to the program's arrival or departure details, we will notify all participants as soon as possible. Participants who have purchased Road Scholar airfare are protected against airline change fees; however, anyone who has not purchased Road Scholar airfare will be required to make their own adjustments and may incur fees imposed by the airline.
