Country house check-in 4:45 p.m.
Your Group Leader will meet you at Crowne Plaza Hotel, Manchester Airport. The Manchester hotel operates a complimentary shuttle bus service. Once you have passed baggage reclaim, please use one of the white phones in the arrivals hall and dial 4090. You will be connected to the hotel who will then send the bus for you – this will take approximately 10 minutes.
At the Crowne Plaza Hotel for those arriving by lunchtime, a light lunch with coffee, tea, water included; other beverages available for purchase.
After lunch at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, we’ll board a motorcoach and transfer to the country house. Once we have checked in at the country house, we'll have some time to freshen up and relax until our Orientation session before dinner. Orientation: The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the up-to-date program schedule, discuss roles and responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer questions. This program is staffed with a Group Leader who will also serve as our Study Leader in association with local experts who will lead hikes and provide commentary as we explore. There will be three levels of hikes each day — based on local conditions — with variable terrain and increasing levels of physical challenge so you can select the hike of your choice. Each evening, we will hear about the next day’s hike features, highlights, terrain, ascent, and length with questions and answers, then sign up for your preferred option. Hiking experts will rotate through the difficulty levels in order to interact with as many participants as possible. Hikes will go rain or shine. Transportation to trailheads will be via mini-bus or motorcoach, ascending/descending a few steps. Periods in the daily schedule designated as “Free time” and “At leisure” offer opportunities to do what you like and make your experience even more meaningful and memorable according to your personal preferences. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. Program activities, schedules, personnel, and indicated distances or times may change due to local circumstances/conditions. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding.
At each of the country houses where we’ll stay, we’ll have a 3-course plated and served dinner with coffee, tea, water included; other beverages available for purchase at the bar before and after dinner. If you purchase wine by the bottle, the bar will hold it for you and you can stretch it out. Dinners are relaxed affairs with tables seating up to 10 and no fixed seating plan. Mix and mingle with fellow Road Scholars as well as other English hiking enthusiasts who will be in residence.
At leisure. Continue getting to know your fellow Road Scholars and new English hiking colleagues, settle in, and get a good night’s rest for the day ahead and our first hikes in the Lake District. Each evening before a day of hiking we'll select our sandwiches for the following day.
