Revel in the feeling of freedom as you explore scenic Southwest Virginia. Alongside experienced experts, discover beautiful stretches of the Virginia Creeper Trail, the Appalachian Trail, state parks and nature preserves. Each day you'll choose from slower-paced or more challenging routes that pass through cool spruce and fir forests. Whichever path you choose, hike beside fresh mountain springs and follow paths to stone cliff outcrops and breathtaking mountain views.

General Notes

The Retreat Difference: This unique, often basic and no-frills experience at a Road Scholar Retreat includes opportunities for early morning exercise, interaction with the local community for insight into local life, an authentic farm-to-table or locally sourced meal, a live performance or event, and a single room to yourself for only $100 more (for many programs). Due to the nature of this program, listening devices are not available.

Craig Makufka is the program director at Southwest Virginia 4-H Educational Center. Before joining the staff at the 4-H, Craig was an environmental educator at The Alice Ferguson Foundation in Accokeek, Maryland. Craig holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Clarion University in Pennsylvania and is an avid birder.
