Reimer Palma
Reimer Palma is a self-proclaimed “nature guy.” He fondly recalls, at an early age, accompanying his father on walks through the rainforest to go fishing or for work. Those quiet outdoor explorations further fueled his appreciation for and an awareness of his natural surroundings. When Reimer attended a course in ecotourism at his high school, he became intrigued with the idea of becoming a naturalist guide. In 2009, he began attending natural history courses at La Selva Biological Field Station in preparation for his certification. As a naturalist leader, Reimer enjoys introducing visitors to many of Costa Rica’s beautiful protected areas; although the lush Caribbean lowlands, where he grew up, still hold the number one spot in his heart. When Reimer isn’t leading groups or enjoying time with his family, you will most likely find him hitting his college books in pursuit of his bachelor’s degree in biology.

Biodiversity, Transfer to Monteverde, Bat Jungle
Location:
Monteverde
Meals:
B,L,D
Stay:
Hotel Montaña Monteverde
Activity Note
Getting on/off a bus; driving about about 94 miles, approximately 3.5 hours riding time. Travel is broken up by en route stops for program activities and lunch.
Breakfast:
At the hotel.
Morning:
We will learn about Costa Rica's biodiversity during an informative presentation given at the hotel by a local expert. After checking out of the hotel, we'll board a bus and begin the transfer to Monteverde. Monteverde was founded by a group of American Quakers in the 1950's. Fearful of what they saw as growing militarism in the U.S., the group chose to make their home in a country they felt better matched their pacifist beliefs. When they began settling Monteverde, they planned to transform the area into profitable farmland. The Quakers developed a fairly successful cheese industry, but they also recognized the delicate nature of the land and helped establish the area’s first wildlife sanctuary—the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve.
Lunch:
At a restaurant en route.
Afternoon:
We expect to arrive in Monteverde early in the afternoon. After checking in and settling into our rooms, we'll ride to Bat Jungle where we'll observe various bat species up close and learn about their biology and function in nature. Bat Jungle is an educational space designed and managed by respected U.S. bat biologist Dr. Richard LaVal. Informative displays help to explain about bat biology, bat diversity, and their crucial role in nature as pollinators. Bat Jungle has more than 90 bats, representing 8 different species, housed in a recreated nighttime cloud forest environment. Glass windows give visitors the rare opportunity to look inside the forest enclosure and observe bats feeding, flying, and socializing. Special microphones capture the high pitched bat vocalizations and broadcast them through loudspeakers in the bat viewing area. We will ride back to the hotel and have a bit of down time to relax before dinner.
Dinner:
At a local restaurant.
Evening:
At leisure.

Monteverde Dairy Farming, Sky Walk Suspended Bridges
Location:
Monteverde
Meals:
B,L,D
Stay:
Hotel Montaña Monteverde
Activity Note
Getting on/off a bus; about 15 miles, approximately 1 hour riding time. Walking up to 2 miles; undulating trails, suspended bridges, uneven terrain. Remember to wear sunscreen, insect repellent and tennis shoes. Do not wear open-toed shoes for today's activities.
Breakfast:
At the hotel.
Morning:
We will start the day with a bus ride to a nearby dairy farm to learn about its history, day-to-day operation, and transition to regenerative farming during a walking exploration of the facilities led by a farm employee. Fields of sugar cane slowly made way for grazing cows and milking facilities in the mid-1950s and beyond. In recent years, the farm began transitioning away from conventional agriculture and working towards a more sustainable and environmentally-responsible model. Although it remains primarily a dairy operation, the farm has set aside 20 hectares for forest conservation and added small-scale production of coffee, honey, vegetables, and animal husbandry to its business plan. During our field trip we will also delve into the impact of climate change to this region and learn about local efforts to reduce the community's carbon footprint.
Lunch:
At a local restaurant.
Afternoon:
We will ride to the Monteverde Sky Walk, part of the Sky Adventures Park, to learn about cloudforest ecology during a walk on reserve trails and suspended bridges with a local expert. Our explorations will lead us through the lower levels of the forest and onward to its upper story, giving us a comprehensive view of this unique environment and its life forms. Concluding our day's activities we will ride to our hotel and have some time to rest and freshen up before dinner.
Dinner:
At the hotel.
Evening:
At leisure. Prepare for check-out and transfer in the morning.

As we continue our river exploration we will also search for signs of crocodiles, river otters and turtles that commonly frequent these waters.
Lunch:
At a local restaurant.
Afternoon:
Following lunch, we will transfer to the Rincon de la Vieja area. Once at the hotel, we will check-in and settle into our rooms followed by free time. This might be a good opportunity to enjoy spa treatments at the hotel, relax by the pool or hang out with new friends. The national park is part of the Guanacaste Conservation Area—a UNESCO World Heritage site. A well-marked system of trails allows visitors to experience the forests and volcanic features of the park including fumaroles, hot springs and thermal mud pools. Elevations range from under 2,000 feet to upwards of 6,300 feet at the peak of Santa Maria Volcano—Rincón de la Vieja Volcano’s dormant sibling. Later, we'll change into bathing suits and ride to the Rio Negro hot springs to treat our sore muscles to a relaxing soak in the thermal pools and/or take a volcanic mud bath. Mud baths have been used for centuries as a way to alleviate body aches and muscle pains. Spas offer mud treatments and baths for their relaxing effects as well as skin cleansing and healing properties. In addition to helping draw away skin impurities, the mud also has minerals such as sodium, potassium and magnesium that are believed to contribute to healthy skin. If you want to have a great adventure with your grandchild, this program is the one for you! My granddaughter and I learned so much about how complex nature is in Costa Rica while having a fun time. We loved seeing all the birds, reptiles and mammals. And we certainly enjoyed the water activities. Costa Ricans are so entuned to nature, it's sure to make you and your grandchild appreciate it more.

The Costa Rica program with our grandson was beautiful, engaging and educational!
So glad we had this experience together in this land that calls us to commit to environmental issues of our day - how timely. The leaders were superb!

This is a wonderful program with so much to do and see. Prepare to be active all day and sleep well at night. Your child or grandchild can learn a lot about culture, the world, nature, and themselves, all while staying safe and having fun.

Only choose this program if your grandchild is ready for big adventure and seeing all kinds of beautiful and interesting animals. Our grandchild read the two descriptions of the two intergenerational programs in Costa Rica and chose this one for these two reasons, and we were so happy she did. Every day was filled with variety, fun, education, and warm, friendly people and we lost track of how many different animals we saw. Our granddaughter's favorite two experiences were swimming in a natural pool below a rushing waterfall and standing in an enclosure next to a toucan who splashed us with water. My favorite was learning about the Blue Zone where people live very long lives, as we ate at a historic home and learned to make tortillas, play the marimba, make clay and dance with a local dance group. My husband's favorite experiences were visiting a regenerational farm and ziplining above the trees. The two guides Erick and Jose made it fun and interesting every day. Our accommodations and food were excellent.

This trip was a wonderful balance between fun activities for older (15-17 year-old) teenagers and for senior adults. The bonding among the teenagers was a joy to see (and was helped by our attentive guides), and the bonding between the generations was enhanced by traveling together and learning together about the biodiversity of Costa Rica. It was a long-awaited dream during Covid, and when we finally were able to live the dream, it met all our expectations. Our guides were fantastic, kind, and knowledgeable people. This was the best of all the Road Scholar trips we've taken so far, but there will be more!

The trip to Costa Rica with my grandson was a delight. There
is nothing like an 11 year old boy for complete candor!
The trip was well planned in varied locations, our guides were very well versed in every area that we covered sharing in giving informative talks to us as we drove through the countryside. (The bus driver, by the way, was excellent at maneuvering tricky roads throughout our trip.)
When there was a huge rainfall our guides were quick to come up with a substitute activity and one of the guides met me at the spa where I was having a message to walk me to a van in the deluge. In addition, when there was a mix-up on the reservation at the last place we stayed it was quickly and satisfactorily resolved. I don't think Road Scholar would want to start using the new location, however, because I don't think their guests are what is typical of Road Scholar.
The only glitch on our trip for me is that according to the receipt for my message at the Borinquen, the cost was less than I was charged on my Visa card. I still need to resolve that with my credit card company but I would not recommend the spa to future guests.
I would certainly recommend Cloud Forests to Volcanoes though, especially with the two guides we had. Jimmy took fabulous pictures and sent them to all of us to remember our trip for years to come.
Our group was small but we were all congenial so I appreciate that Road Scholar did not cancel our trip and that we still had such a large, comfortable bus.
Thanks for a fabulous first Road Scholar trip.

Good, it was easy to use, which I really appreciate...

Highly recommend this program, both because everyone should know about biological diversity and its precarious situation and because the interpersonal interactions among both kids and adults were a joy to experience and witness.
