We will check out of the hotel and take a bus ride to the port, where we will board a fast ferry to the island of Hvar. Following the decline of the Roman Empire, Hvar Town — a center of Adriatic civilization and trade for thousands of years — was besieged by pirates. Hvar’s people sought protection from the Venetians, resulting in a new era of prosperity that enriched its cultural heritage. Today, we will see ancient walls, Gothic palaces, and stone paved streets. Led by a local expert, we will walk to the Arsenal – described by the Venetians as “the most beautiful and the most useful building in the whole of Dalmatia” – that includes the first theater in the western world open to all classes (built in 1612). We’ll continue across the old town square, the largest in Dalmatia, to St. Stephen’s Cathedral, completed in the 18th Century on a 6th Century church site, followed by the Franciscan monastery. Upon arrival, we will set out on an expert-led walking field trip to see impressive stone carvings and old architecture of Hvar Town while learning about its time under Venetian rule.
Lunch:
On your own.
Afternoon:
We’ll have some time for independent exploration to see what interests each of us most in Hvar Town. Among the fascinating sites are Gothic palaces, the city wall, and the Arsenal building that housed the first public theater in Europe. It served as the military and administrative center of the island until the 13th century, when the Venetian Empire decided to move it towards Lesina (modern day Hvar Town). The old center was then renamed Cittavecchia, or “old town” in Italian, and then became known as Stari Grad, or “old town” in Croatian. When originally constructed, the Great Wall of Ston was 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) long and one of the longest defense walls in Europe – however, centuries of battles and several earthquakes has left only 5.5 kilometers (3.4 miles) standing. It was our first RS trip and we really enjoyed it.
We would like to contact others on the trip. Can you tell us how to go about that?

A program that covers more than 3000 years of history while just joining the European Union. Spectacular island settings in the midst of the Adriatic Sea with a population broad of their country and its survival.
— Review left October 19, 2024
We went to Craotia because it is my husband's ancestral homeland. We had heard a bit about it from relatives and from our daughter, who visited Croatia while she was studying abroad. She was right in that almost everyone was friendly and spoke English! Croatia did not disappoint! It's a beautiful country that caters to its tourists. Loved the trip!
— Review left October 15, 2024
Overall, I thought the trip was good. I enjoyed the sights, hotels and connecting with different people. The presentations were interesting. I really enjoyed the free time to explore on my own, shop, and eat when and what I wanted to eat. The ferry rides were fun, although somewhat hectic getting on and off. The group leader had interesting stories he told us regarding the Croatian war.
— Review left October 5, 2024
This is an excellent, well run tour of the Dalmatian Coast. It icludes three beautiful Croatian islands and two of the country's largest cities. Just the right balance of group time and time on our own. Entertaining tour leader.
— Review left October 4, 2024
This is a wonderful experience for those desiring something a little different. Although it starts and finishes in 'major' cities, most of the time is spent on islands off the coast, in beautiful accommodations. Everything about it is top notch, with lots of locally produced olive oils and wines, as well as seafood.

on a 2019 Cruise we stopped in Zadar for a part of one day. This Road Scholar Tour of the south half of the Eastern Adriatic Sea along Croatia was a ten day feet-on-the-ground Tour that was outstanding.

The travel experience to Croatia was beyond my expectations. Zoran , our guide made every one feel special and well cared for . The people in our group were kind and caring and intelligent. They went out of their way to help each other.

The leader was excellent. I did not find the other participants as friendly as I did with my trip to Scotland.
There was too much alcohol. We were constantly being offered Croatian wine...several times a day.

This was our first Road Scholar program and we can highly recommend it and the tour guide Nisrim. We plan to look into other programs for next year.

Zoran was the best tour guide I have ever had.

"Island Hopping in Croatia" was an amazing experience. The islands and Adriatic Sea are beautiful. The Republic of Croatia is very proud of their country and all people were very welcoming. They have a lot to share with their stone mason school, olive oil making, wine making, sea food variety, etc. Citizens want to keep their country free from any more power struggles.
— Review left June 7, 2022
Croatia should be on the top of your must-see places to visit. Stunning vistas, turquoise, crystal clear waters, craggy mountains, combined with a welcoming people, unfailingly excellent food, and a clean environment--it's all there.

Few”rocks were left unturned”! And there were a lot of rocks. I found the citizens of Croatia to be friendly and eager to share their country

This trip is a great way to get a taste of the islands in coastal Croatia. It is a beautiful, friendly country that should not be missed. Spectacular scenery, wonderful food and wine, incredible cities and towns that "ooze" history, charm and character.

Beautiful islands, rich in history, visited using local transport with very good local guides and lecturers highlighted with field trips to family farms, a stone sculpting school, and small businesses all capped with restaurants serving delicious food, great sights to visit in the free time, and a walk on walls surrounding a lovely city: the perfect October trip!

Definitely five stars. Our guide Dejan Rilak flawlessly executed the somewhat intricate program of this tour. Through various means of transportation (tour buses, public ferries, short walks, small boat trips, public buses) there was never a hitch. No one was lost and the scheduled transport was always there. Also, all scheduled lectures and local guided tours occurred on time, as planned. Skill in coordinating was not Dejan’s only virtue. He kept our group informed of what was planned for the current day and the next, and he had the good sense to repeat in the same communication the essential aspects what he had said (like when and where to meet), in case we might have missed it. He also had a very good style in managing the group—I think he might even be able to herd cats. He silently counted the group and knew who might be missing, yet never mentioned the latecomers by name. He only said things like “two more before we start.” In addition, he gave several informative informal talks during bus rides. Throughout he showed not only patience and sensitivity to personal issues but also a good sense of humor. We have not experienced a better guide in our five or six trips with Road Scholar.
The itinerary of the tour was very well conceived. It provided a diversity of experiences, including not only guided tours of major tourist attractions, but also several stops and meals in local rural facilities (farms, including a mussel farm on the water).
Lectures were uniformly informative and well presented by experts in non-technical language (all lecturers spoke clear English).
The “flex” feature of the trip worked well for us. We were able to visit museums and other sites and to choose restaurants based on personal interests.
Originally we were interested in the RS yacht trip of the islands, but given our experience with the Island Hopping Tour, we believe the greater freedom and range of experience was a better choice for us.

This was a great trip. We visited several agro-tourism/farm sites where we tasted locally produced wine, olive oils, liqueurs and foods, which we could not have visited as individual travelers, as well as places that I would not have chosen on my own but thoroughly enjoyed. Ferries were easy to use, accommodations were great, and the lectures were interesting. Croatia is a beautiful country with welcoming people, delicious cuisine and history at every turn. A nice combination of time and meals with the group, and time to explore on our own.
— Review left June 11, 2019
Amazing and lovely country where you can visit UNESCO historic sites as well learn local traditional industries in farming areas. Enjoy tasty Croatian food. Discover the islands on ferries, chartered boats and on foot. Walk on the Old City Wall in Dubrovnik, the second longest after the Great Wall of China, so it's said.
— Review left June 9, 2019
This was a wonderful trip led by Zoran, a wonderful guide. While Zoran was with us throughout, at each location we had local guides/experts as guest hosts/lecturers for museums, bus rides, tastings, castle tours and lectures. Having local guides gave that personal touch that brought each location to life. Not that it needed much help as the coastal islands and cities are vibrant and gorgeous. Our trip was in mid-May and at the start of the trip we had unusually cold and rainy weather. The upside is that we didn't battle the crowds that apparently show up in the heart of the summer. And the sun eventually did come out! I liked the mix of free time and structured group time on this trip and felt that Road Scholar did a great job of choosing a nice blend of standard must-do activities and activities that tourists on their own would never discover. Special thanks again to Zoran. We had some participants with special dietary needs and some people who caught a flu going around - and Zoran did his best to manage all of that plus keep to the itinerary. And he stayed positive throughout.
