Share a magical adventure with your grandchild on beautiful Chincoteague Island. Observe the herds of wild ponies that still roam the marshes and beaches of nearby Assateague Island and were made famous by Margeurite Henry’s beloved children's classic “Misty of Chincoteague’ and the timeless movie it inspired. Tour the town visiting the actual locations portrayed in the book and the film. Visit restricted areas of the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge with an expert to look for wild pony herds, and learn about barrier island wildlife, waterfowl and island ecology. Enjoy a visit to our pristine beach, one of the longest remaining undeveloped shorelines on the Atlantic coast. Explore the coves and marshes with a park ranger collecting, observing and releasing specimens of marsh and marine critters. Cruise island waters, learn how we grow oysters and clams, and observe waterfowl and other marine life in our bays and marshes. Explore the NASA Visitor Center on Wallops Island, learning about space exploration and the different rockets launched there.
Activity Level

Best of all, you'll ...

  • Visit the Beebe Ranch, the original home of the Misty, the iconic Chincoteague pony. Spend time with a Saltwater Cowboy and learn how the wild ponies have survived.
  • Explore areas of the wildlife refuge normally closed to the public, and get close to wild ponies, bald eagles, terrapin, deer and elk.
  • While cruising island waters, observe the Wallops launch site, and view Assateague and its lighthouse from the water as it looked years ago to mariners and pirates.
