General Notes

This is a Family program for participants, their adult children and grandchildren ages 8 and up. This program allows participants to explore a number of Costa Rica’s eco-systems in a relatively short amount of time. Bus travel is a necessity for an up-close experience, but program activities help to break up travel time. Local road conditions, weather, traffic and elevation are factors in determining time of travel. Because of the special nature of this program, we request that you call us to enroll. Please call toll free at (800) 454-5768, Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 9 p.m. ET.

At the hotel, we will attend a lecture given by a local expert on biodiversity in Costa Rica. We will then check out of the hotel, board our bus, and transfer via Varablanca to Sarapiquí. On the way, we’ll make a stop at La Paz Waterfall Gardens. La Paz Waterfall Gardens is an ecological park located near the Poás Volcano, in a verdant, misty area where cloud and rain forests meet. The park has five beautiful waterfalls that can be admired from various viewpoints through a network of stairways and viewing platforms. Other attractions include a serpentarium, frog exhibit, walking trails, and one of the largest butterfly observatories in the world. A walk inside the oversized butterfly observatory reveals a large flowering garden with thousands of fluttering butterflies belonging to more than 25 different species. Some resident favorites include the Blue Morpho, Monarch, Blue-banded Purplewing, Salome Yellow, and Banded Orange.

We will have an early morning (pre-breakfast) birding walk. Next, we’ll ride to a local farm to learn about cacao production and the secrets of making chocolate. We’ll accompany a local expert on a brief walking exploration of the farm as we learn how cacao is grown, harvested, processed, and turned into chocolate. An added treat: We will have an opportunity to sample different kinds of chocolate! We’ll return to the lodge after our field trip.
Lunch:
At the lodge.
Afternoon:
We’ll ride to an assigned drop-off location on the Sarapiqui River in preparation for an exhilarating river-rafting field trip where we’ll participate in paddling. Each raft will have its own rafting expert who will sit at the back to navigate and direct participants on how and when to paddle. The Sarapiquí River winds through a region of Costa Rica called the “Eternal Spring” due to its ever present thick, verdant flora and abundant corresponding fauna. The source is in the mountains and flows down through the rainforest before joining the main body of the river. Whitewater rapids are classified by level of difficulty. Class I: Moving water with a few riffles and small waves; few or no obstructions. Class II: Easy rapids with smaller waves, clear channels that are obvious without scouting; some maneuvering required. Please note that this classification system is only a guide; degrees of difficulty vary based on local conditions including water levels. We’ll return to the lodge to freshen up and change clothes.

During the boat ride, our Group Leader will introduce us to the birds and animals that frequent the riverine vegetation, including caimans and a variety of water birds. We’ll also take this opportunity to observe land utilization along the riverbanks and consider the human impact on the ecology of the river system. After disembarkation, we’ll return to our bus and ride a short distance into the Sarapiquí community, where a local resident will invite us into her home, talk about daily life, and show us how to prepare some typical Tico dishes. We’ll be accompanied by a member of the Sarapiquí Conservation Learning Center (SCLC), who will also give us an overview of their mission and talk to us about their work together with the community. Founded by Giovanna Holbrook in the mid-1990s, the SCLC is a registered nonprofit organization whose mission is to link communities and conservation through education and ecotourism in the Sarapiqui region. Programs include environmental education, ecotourism activities, English classes, an ecology club, community outreach, a women’s group, and many others.
Lunch:
At a local home.
Afternoon:
Back at the lodge, we will have some downtime to rest and freshen up before our next activity. Later in the afternoon, we will join our Group Leader for a presentation on tropical rainforests. During our session, we will learn about rainforest layers, plant and animal adaptations, environmental threats, and local conservation efforts. Morning:
After checking out of the lodge, we’ll board our bus and transfer to the Rio Cuarto region to view semi-wild Macaws. The bus transfer presents an excellent time to practice your Spanish informally with the Group Leaders and others. Our first stop will be to a local family-owned farm that semi-wild Great Green Macaws and Scarlet Macaws like to frequent. These colorful and vocal birds can usually be spotted perched on surrounding trees or flying about the farm. During our visit our Group Leaders will introduce the group to the concept of a “biological corridor” and we will learn how this farm plays a role in that concept. We’ll then travel to La Fortuna town for lunch.
Lunch:
At a local restaurant.
Afternoon:
After lunch, we will take a field trip with our Group Leaders to Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges. During our visit, we will traverse a combination of nature trails and hanging bridges through the rainforest canopy. Upon arrival, we’ll go on an interpretative walk in the rainforest canopy for an opportunity to obtain a perspective that is usually reserved to monkeys and birds only! The Hanging Bridges project consists of a system of trails covering a distance of about two miles with eight fixed bridges and six hanging bridges, all built with the latest techniques and designed with an eye for both beauty and safety. The entire project was designed to blend with the natural environment, leaving the forest virtually intact. The idea of the operation is to facilitate access, with the minimum possible impact, to one of the least explored parts of the rainforest: the canopy. We’ll then go to the hotel, check in, and enjoy dinner.
Dinner:
At the hotel.
Evening:
At leisure.
Activity Note
Getting on/off a bus; driving about 8 miles to zip lining facility, approximately 1/2 hour riding time. Minimum height required for this activity is 3 feet 11 inches. Minimal climbing required for ziplining; getting in/out of open air gondola; height of platforms varies – highest is 656 feet. Extent and duration of walking and other activities during free time according to personal choice.
Breakfast:
At the hotel.
Morning:
Get ready for our exciting canopy zip-lining adventure! We’ll ride by bus from the hotel to an establishment just outside of the Arenal Volcano National Park to begin our adventure. Thrill-seekers come here to enjoy the adventure of whizzing through the forest canopy on zip lines while nature lovers rejoice in the sights and sounds of the forest. The experience begins with a leisurely open-air gondola ride up the mountain followed by a safety lesson. Then, we will experience a heart-pumping descent via a network of zip lines and platforms before returning to the grounds via the open-air gondola. At the end of the activity, we will enjoy beautiful views of Arenal Volcano National Park while learning from local experts and our Group Leaders about the unique flora and fauna of the adjacent park's transitional forest.
Lunch:
At a local restaurant. After lunch, we will board the bus and ride back to the hotel.
Afternoon:
Free time. Take this opportunity for personal independent exploration to see and do what interests you most. The Group Leaders will be happy to offer suggestions. You may wish to enjoy the pools, or just relax at the hotel.
Dinner:
At the hotel.
Evening:
Tonight, we’ll enjoy an up-close and educational evening with bats. We’ll ride to a nearby location to meet a local expert who will teach us about the history and characteristics of bats. At the end of the presentation, we will have the chance to observe some bats up close that were captured by researchers to study. We’ll then return to the lodge and adjourn for the night.
Activity Note
Getting on/off a bus; about 13 miles, approximately 1/2 hour riding time. Walking up to 1 mile on undulating paths. Walking and other free time activities according to personal choice.
Breakfast:
At the hotel.
Morning:
We’ll board our bus and ride to a local farm to learn about its history and some of the agricultural traditions in this fertile region. Although tourism surpassed agriculture as the main source of revenue in the area, many local plantations still produce important amounts of papaya, sugar cane, tapioca, and ornamental plants. At the farm’s sugar cane mill, we will learn about the traditional methods of sugar cane processing. Then we’ll work up an appetite while learning to make tortillas and cooking them on a traditional wood stove. We’ll also enjoy a presentation by a local dance group who will perform folkloric dances wearing traditional costumes.
Lunch:
At the farm, we’ll have a traditional meal hosted by the family.
Afternoon:
Completing our activities, we’ll ride back to the hotel for free time.
Dinner:
At the hotel.
Evening:
At leisure. Prepare for check-out and transfer in the morning.
Activity Note
Getting on/off a bus; driving 110 miles, approximately 4.5 hours riding time. Getting in/out of boat; ride is approximately 2 hours; boating is tide dependent and may need to be offered at a different time of day.
Breakfast:
At the hotel.
Morning:
Once checked out, we’ll begin our transfer to the Central Pacific Area.
Lunch:
At a restaurant en route.
Afternoon:
Upon arrival to the Tarcoles River area, we will board a flat-bottomed pontoon boat and travel on the Tarcoles River searching these estuarine habitats of the Tarcoles River Basin for some of the local wildlife. As one of the most important in the Pacific coastal region, this basin virtually drains the entire western side of the Central Valley and hosts an amazing diversity of wildlife along its banks and in the extensive mangrove areas near its estuary. In addition to scarlet macaws, water birds and other creatures, some of the large population of American crocodiles (Crocodilus acutus) can often be spotted sunning themselves on the riverbanks. Our Group Leaders will offer commentary as we search and afterwards, in a special on-site presentation about crocs, a local expert will provide facts that were discovered over the years by local and foreign specialists. After finishing up our boat safari, we’ll complete our transfer to Punta Leona and check in at the hotel.
Dinner:
At the hotel.
Evening:
At leisure.
Activity Note
Getting on/off a bus; driving about 5 miles, approximately 1/2 hour riding time. Getting in/out of outrigger canoes with life jackets; short walk to beach to board canoes; paddling. Assistance provided as needed; about 2 hours on the water; potential for both waves and calm water. Walking and other free time activities according to personal choice.
Breakfast:
At the hotel.
Morning:
We’ll transfer via bus to the small coastal village of Agujas for an outrigger canoe paddling adventure led by expert boating staff. Before getting on the water, we'll attend a safety orientation and familiarize ourselves with the equipment. The canoes we’ll use are outriggers, also known as Polynesian canoes, which can carry several people at a time, plus a staff member. Easier to handle, more stable, and safer then kayaks, especially for inexperienced persons, these types of canoes have been plying the oceans of the world for centuries. They were created as tools for survival and travel and, as such, their design remains basically unchanged after generations of refinement. Their beauty lies in their simplicity and functionality. Our modern canoes are built of fiberglass and are equipped with an outrigger on each side to ensure safety and provide peace of mind. As the paddle hits the water, think of the ancient traditions, knowledge and skill that went into the canoe’s evolution. We’ll return to the hotel after our paddling adventure.
Lunch:
At the beach, picnic-style.
Afternoon:
Free time. Take this opportunity for personal independent exploration to see and do what interests you most. The Group Leaders will be happy to offer suggestions. You may wish to enjoy the beaches and pools, or just relax at the hotel.
Dinner:
At the hotel. Share favorite experiences and enjoy camaraderie with new Road Scholar friends during our farewell dinner.
Evening:
At leisure. Prepare for check-out and departure in the morning.
Activity Note
Getting on/off a bus; driving about 50 miles, approximately 2 hours riding time to the airport. Please take this into effect when booking your international flights; do not select a departure flight that leaves San José any earlier than 12:30 p.m. Hotel check-out by 11:00 a.m. See your program’s “Getting There” information regarding transfers.
Breakfast:
At the hotel (dependent on flight times). Take-away breakfasts available upon request.
Morning:
There will be an early morning transfer to the San Jose airport included in the program cost for those interested. This concludes our program. If you are returning home, safe travels. If you are staying on independently, have a wonderful time. If you are transferring to another Road Scholar program, detailed instructions are included in your Information Packet for that program. We hope you enjoy Road Scholar learning adventures and look forward to having you on rewarding programs in the future. Don’t forget to join our Facebook page and follow us on Instagram. Best wishes for all your journeys!

This was a great experience. It’s really excellent for multi-generational family groups that include the kids, parents, and grand parents, which probably works best in the summer time, of course. All the activities are well suited to all ages, and the best part is, other than packing, you don’t have to worry about any of the details. You just show up and have a great time. This was the best way to visit a country for the first time that I have participated in. This was my first group tourism activity and we traveled with a family of 4 + grandma. Will consider other Road Scholar programs in the future.

An outstanding trip to the rainforest in Costa Rica. I gained respect for animals that I previously did not know or appreciate and saw many birds and animals, close up, that before, I only saw in books or films.

This trip was both educational and fun. This was my 3rd trip with my grandson. We both had a great time. The guides, Jorge and Daynor, really tried hard to be sure everyone had fun. They are very knowledgeable about the area and especially about the birds and animals and went out of their way to be sure we saw it all. There were so many activities and lectures--too numerous to name here--that were highlights. A few include zip lining, white water rafting, canoe to private beach, bat and cocoa lectures, etc. The kids all seemed to have a blast. This trip is highly recommended. We lucked out with the weather, but if you can go outside the rainy season, that would be a better option.

Jorge and Deinor led a great program. If you like adventure with white water rafting, zip lining, outrigger canoeing, and hanging bridges, then this program might be for you. If you love learning about plants, animals, conservation, preservation of the rain forest, and Costa Rican communities, this program might be for you. If you like macaws, capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, sloths, anteaters, toucans, red eyed tree frogs, poison dart frogs and many other animals, this program might be for you. If you want to learn about chocolate making and try your hand at it, make tortillas and authentic Costa Rican food, and try plants right out of a local farm, this program might be for you. With 3 generations, there was something for everyone. We all wished we could stay longer. A wonderful program. Thanks to Jorge and Deinor for making our vacation amazing.

The Costa Rica family you Monkeys and Macaws was great. Our grandsons, aged 10 and 12 were among the youngest in the group, but they could keep up and learned a lot. The program was well paced and had a good balance of learning and fun. The hot humid weather was a bit much some days, but everyone hung in there. Our guides, Alex and Pedro, were excellent. They were fonts of knowledge and kept things fun and interesting for the kids. They also worked very hard to keep everything running smoothly and to adjust the schedule to avoid rain spilling some of the experiences.

It was a super wonderful five star trip , and all activities appealed to our 3 generations of family members, 10 of us in all. Our grandchildren are 22, 18 and two 16 year olds. They enjoyed all the activities and especially the zip lining, river rafting, outrigger canoe trip, the intro to bats, the chocolate demo, cooking lesson, seeing Macaws, the hikes, and the waterfalls. Meeting other families on the trip was an added bonus!! Our guides Roger Melendez and Jimmy Trejos were excellent. They were personable, caring, humorous, and very conscious of our safety. Being native Costa Ricans they gave us lots of wonderful explanations of their beautiful country, plus the flora and fauna. All our family highly recommends the trip!!! Julie and Carey Capitola, CA

From Monkeys to Macaws Family Trip was a fabulous experience for 3 generations of our family. It was one of the most educational and exciting adventures our family has ever gotten to do together. The itinerary provided activities and leaders that gave us an increased appreciation of the tropical ecosystems and also an amazing atmosphere full of fun and exciting activities. The environmental focus was greatly appreciated as well.

This program is ideal for families. We took three grandchildren on this trip, all at different times. It was fun to witness their reaction as they accomplished things far outside their comfort zones. The biodiversity of Costa Rica makes it the perfect place for adventure and learning. Ecotourism at its best. Highly recommended.

Wow, this was one of the best Road Scholar programs we have participated in. It was the perfect blend of activities and education and was equally engaging for adults and kids. Our guides Lenin Duarte and Erick Miranda were the best and really made this trip unforgettable. Their knowledge of plants and animals and birds and history and culture was amazing. We were engaged from early morning birding to impromptu night hikes. I also want to mention our bus driver Omar Brenes who did an amazing job keeping us safe navigating on roads that weren't always in the best condition. Our grandchildren can't stop talking about the fun they had. One negative, most of us had to connect through Miami on the way home which is a nightmare. You need a minimum of 1 1/2 hours for passport control and customs. We had 1 3/4 hours and our 2nd flight was already boarding by the time we got to the gate which left us no time to grab food for dinner before boarding.

a fantastic trip that opened a world of adventure and an introduction to the broader world in which we live to our two grandsons ages 13 and 15. We all had great adventures and new learning experiences together. One exprressed his feeling tha it opened him up to the adventurtes that wants to do in the future. The second grandson indicated that he wasn't sure he wanted to go and then at the end didn't want to leave.

FANTASTIC experience with two of our grandchildren, ages 14 and 17. The guides, Erik and Ivan, did a great job keeping our group of 18, aged 10 to 76, together and engaged. It was a perfect blend of education, challenging activities (white water rafting, zip lining, suspension bridge walking) and quieter endeavors like tortilla making. July is in the rainy season, so it was wet and hot - bring quick drying, loose clothing, an umbrella and poncho (my rain jacket was quite hot but was needed for the zip line, a loose poncho would not have worked) and plenty of mosquito repellent, also Benadryl gel for when you do get a bug bite. My best Zeiss binoculars, while bulky, were a godsend - I got to see so much with them that others missed! The bird/reptile/mammal watching is par excellence. This trip was delayed 2 years due to COVID, but both grandchildren want to do it again. We all came away with a greater appreciation of the importance of protection of the environment. Cannot recommend highly enough! PS this was our third experience with the Miami airport and it is always a nightmare, avoid it if you can! Long lines and rude staff and the tiny gates in the basement where flights to smaller towns depart are dirty, noisy, and hot. Give yourself at LEAST 2 hours to get through customs on the way home if you go through Miami.

Road scholar tends to attract interested participants who are fun to be with. This was certainly the case on this trip. The family Costa Rica adventure was not our first Road Scholar adventure--but could easily have been the best. Out guides were fantastic, the group size perfect, and the variety of ecosystems and activities included something for us all. All 3 generations learned a lot--and it was presented in such an engaging way that we loved learning. What could be better for a 10 year old boy than having monkeys on the roof of your bungalow or holding a tiny tree frog! Great combination of scheduled activities and some free time. We were ready for bed each night in a pleasantly tired way and waking to Costa Rican coffee, screeching macaws and howler monkey chants can't be beat. Many thanks to Pedro, Remer, and amazing bus driver Jeffrey.
