This trip is so good that I fear it won't be off the beaten track for long! Slovenia has so much to offer, but because it is a relatively small country, you don't have to endure a lot of long bus rides to see the highlights. Slovenians all seemed friendly and welcoming--and very proud of their beautiful country. Despite the fact that this is a new program, Group Leader Jana Stepic worked out such an interesting and efficient itinerary that you really get to see the wonders of Slovenia without being exhausted by the end. My husband and I consider her absolutely top notch (we've taken 40 RS trips so we know the high standards for their Group Leaders). She's organized, energetic, attuned to the needs of participants, and a lot of fun to travel with. Her English is perfect, and her knowledge is extensive. Slovenia has so much to offer: mountains with turquoise glacial lakes; medieval towns with cobblestone streets; spectacular views of the Adriatic; classical ruins; artisanal producers of sea salt, wine, olive oil, and every kind of foodies' delight. And then there's the scenery: a photo op at every turn. Guest lecturers were eager to share their expertise on the complex history of the region. There were a few spots where walking sticks are definitely advisable on the mountain paths and cobblestone streets. I forgot to bring mine, which meant I spent time watching my step instead of the scenery, but that's on me! If you love nature, history, and great food, consider adding Slovenia to your Bucket List.
