At a Glance
"Driving the Samburu Bride" is a lively and candid account of Dr. Diane Perlov's work as an anthropologist in northern Kenya, providing an intimate view into semi-nomadic Samburu culture and the realities of fieldwork. Drawing on her book and a 40-year relationship with the Samburu, Dr. Perlov illustrates the dynamic nature of their culture and how individuals navigate a rapidly changing world of digital communications and paved roads while honoring their Samburu identity. Having recently returned from Kenya, Dr. Perlov offers fresh insights into the impact of this fast-paced life on the highland Samburu, and the delicate balance between cultural continuity and change.

The progress and contrasts the speaker featured was truly fascinating. It is admirable how she is helping get the word out about how these are individuals and not stereotypes. She really made the culture come to life and followed up with them on a regular basis. They certainly made an impact on her personally and as an anthropologist.

Very interesting account of a Kenyan village combining tradition and change, based on Perlov's personal experiences over 40 years. Highly recommended.
