"Driving the Samburu Bride" is a lively and candid account of Dr. Diane Perlov's work as an anthropologist in northern Kenya, providing an intimate view into semi-nomadic Samburu culture and the realities of fieldwork. Drawing on her book and a 40-year relationship with the Samburu, Dr. Perlov illustrates the dynamic nature of their culture and how individuals navigate a rapidly changing world of digital communications and paved roads while honoring their Samburu identity. Having recently returned from Kenya, Dr. Perlov offers fresh insights into the impact of this fast-paced life on the highland Samburu, and the delicate balance between cultural continuity and change.

General Notes

Your online lecture will take place live over the course of 1-2 hours. All times are listed in the EASTERN time zone. If you live in a different time zone, please adjust your schedule accordingly. This live online experience uses Zoom Webinar, an easy-to-use web video service that includes closed captioning. All you need is an Internet connection and your computer. You will receive a confirmation email when you enroll, and a reminder email one week and one day before, as well as the morning of the event with a link and instructions on how to tune in. You will not be pictured on screen during the lecture, but you will have the opportunity to ask the instructor live questions using the Q&A box. Unless otherwise noted, all those who enroll in this program receive access to the live event as well as a recording of the lecture that you can watch any time within the two weeks following the live event.

Diane Perlov

Diane Perlov is senior vice president for special projects at the California Science Center in Los Angeles. For 20 years, Diane led the Exhibit Development Department, overseeing exhibition planning and content. Diane has curated four major special exhibitions and co-developed four ethnographic films. She received the 2008 International Service Citation from the U.S. National Committee of the International Council of Museums. Diane holds a Ph.D. in anthropology from UCLA and authored 'Driving the Samburu Bride: Fieldwork among the Cattle Keepers in Kenya' (Waveland Press 2021).
