A Superior Exploration: Lake Superior’s History & Ecology

My Road Scholar adventure on Lake Superior was nothing short of transformative. From seamless check-in at the comfortable Barkers Island Inn to the final farewell, every detail was impeccably organized. The pacing was perfect—balancing expert lectures with moderate hikes, canoe trips, and hands-on explorations that never felt rushed. The experts were the heart of the experience. A tribal historian and environmental scientist offered profound Indigenous perspectives on the lake's role as a "blue water highway" and its current ecological crises. Geologists and ecologists brought ancient bedrock, glacial history, and delicate food webs to life with contagious passion—making complex topics accessible and urgent. We hiked Amnicon Falls, Pattison, and Jay Cooke State Parks, walking on ancient geology and crossing the famous swinging bridge. We canoed the Brule River, dipping our hands into crystal-cold waters and identifying aquatic life—a visceral education I'll never forget. Hands-on activities turned abstract science into lived experience. The environmental challenges were sobering: Lake Superior is warming faster than almost any lake, losing ice cover, and facing algal blooms, invasive species, and pollution. Yet the program delivered this news with hope, emphasizing that awareness drives action. What truly made this trip special was the group. Fellow participants were curious, supportive, and genuinely enjoyable—encouraging each other on steep trails and sparking rich conversations over excellent meals. Strangers became friends united by a love of learning. Road Scholar promises lifelong learning, and this journey delivered. I arrived viewing Lake Superior as a distant postcard; I left feeling a deep personal connection to its history, people, and precarious future. This was a fresh, exciting, unforgettable experience—one I highly recommend to anyone ready to be inspired by the greatest of the Great Lakes.

A superior exploration of Lake Superior's history, ecology, indigenous culture was presented by knowledgeable speakers and tour guides. We attempted to complete the official Road Scholar feedback form but were unsuccessful. Danielle Fagen and Marie Zhuikov kept the activities scheduled with aplomb. They generated cohesiveness and comfort within the 29 Road Scholar participants. We were impressed with all the speakers. They were passionate and very knowledgeable of their subject areas and encouraged our participation. The youthful curiosity was a beacon of hope for the future of planet earth. This program is excellant for those who love the outdoors and the environment. Many knowledgable presenters with hands on learning mixed with lectures. Beautiful places visited plus a day in Duluth visiting museums and the aquarium. The organizers did a great job, the Inn needs to improve their breakfast menu (we wanted fruit and yogurt) but the food was good otherwise. The transportation to various sites was good, but the airport transfers need some additional clarification in the instructions. Overall, one of my top trips out of 18 trips over the years.

This program was packed with educational content and a variety of activities. I came away with lots of new information but also got to do a couple short hikes and a short canoe experience.

This is the trip to learn about the geological activity near Duluth, MN and Superior, WI. Great leaders who know SO many experts who gave presentations. It was a fun trip through woods, rivers, beaches, and one of the biggest lakes in the world.

What a wonderful place to escape the summer heat and immerse yourself in the beautiful outdoors of the Lake Superior area near Duluth. Who knew there was so much to see and learn! The setting is peaceful and refreshing.
