Orientation: 6:00 p.m. at the hotel. The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the up-to-date program schedule, discuss roles and responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer questions. This is a Road Scholar Family program. Adults are responsible for their minor children. If/when separate age group activities are conducted concurrently, program staff will supervise. Minors are never to be left unsupervised. We will learn from the Group Leader as well as local experts who will give lectures and lead field trips. Unless otherwise specified, transportation during the program will be provided by air-conditioned bus. Our buses do not include onboard toilets, so we have scheduled stops during drives for bathroom breaks. Meals on our program feature local cuisine. Periods in the schedule designated as “Free time” and “At leisure” offer opportunities to do what you like and make your experience even more meaningful and memorable according to your personal preferences. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. Program activities, schedules, personnel, and indicated distances or times may change due to local circumstances/current conditions. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

Morning:
We will board a bus and ride to the Costa Rica Language Academy (CRLA) in preparation for today's activities. Once we disembark, we will participate in a brief introduction to the Academy and its teachers, followed by our first "survival Spanish" lesson. The CRLA is a privately-owned language school founded in 1989 and based in San José. The academy specializes in designing immersive Spanish lessons geared to students from around the world. The language academy has 35 classrooms, 2 computer rooms with internet access, 2 classrooms for Latin dance classes, a kitchen for cooking classes, a cafeteria, terraces, and gardens with sitting areas. The teaching staff at CRLA is accredited with the Costa Rican Department of Education and all hold degrees either from the University of Costa Rica or the Universidad Nacional.
Lunch:
At the CRLA. We will enjoy a traditional meal that we helped to prepare.
Afternoon:
Next, we will board the bus and ride to downtown San José in order to explore the city's historic Central Market and add some new words to our Spanish vocabulary. Inside the market we’ll explore its passageways crowded with stalls selling everything from cut flowers and fresh produce, to medicinal herbs and small diner-style restaurants serving "comida typica." The bustling market was founded in 1880 and is an important cultural site of Costa Rica. We will return to the hotel to enjoy some pool games followed by down time until we meet again for dinner.
Dinner:
At a local restaurant.
Evening:
At leisure. Prepare luggage for a morning check out and transfer.
Activity Note
Getting on/off a bus; driving about about 105 miles, approximately 6 hours total riding time. Travel is broken up by en route stops for program activities and lunch.
Breakfast:
At the hotel.
Morning:
We will learn about Costa Rica's biodiversity during an informative presentation given at the hotel by a local expert. Then, we'll check out of the hotel, board the bus, and ride to the CRLA for a Spanish lesson. Once we conclude our activities at the CRLA we'll climb aboard the bus and begin the transfer to Monteverde. Monteverde was founded by a group of American Quakers in the 1950's. Fearful of what they saw as growing militarism in the U.S., the group chose to make their home in a country they felt better matched their pacifist beliefs. When they began settling Monteverde, they planned to transform the area into profitable farmland. The Quakers developed a fairly successful cheese industry, but they also recognized the delicate nature of the land and helped establish the area’s first wildlife sanctuary—the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve.
Lunch:
At a restaurant en route.
Afternoon:
We'll continue our transfer to Monteverde. Following our late-afternoon arrival to the hotel, we will check in and then regroup to experience a cloud forest sunset at our hotel.
Dinner:
At a restaurant in Santa Elena town.
Evening:
At leisure.
Activity Note
Getting on/off a bus; about 15 miles, approximately 1.5 hours riding time. Walking up to 2 miles; undulating trails, suspended bridges, uneven terrain. Remember to wear sunscreen, insect repellent and tennis shoes. Do not wear open-toed shoes for today's activities.
Breakfast:
At the hotel.
Morning:
We will start the day with a bus ride to a nearby dairy farm to learn about its history, day-to-day operation, and transition to regenerative farming during a walking exploration of the facilities led by a farm employee. Fields of sugar cane slowly made way for grazing cows and milking facilities in the mid-1950s and beyond. In recent years, the farm began transitioning away from conventional agriculture and working towards a more sustainable and environmentally-responsible model. Although it remains primarily a dairy operation, the farm has set aside 20 hectares for forest conservation and added small-scale production of coffee, honey, vegetables, and animal husbandry to its business plan. During our field trip we will also delve into the impact of climate change to this region and learn about local efforts to reduce the community's carbon footprint.
Lunch:
At a local restaurant.
Afternoon:
We will ride to Treetopia Park to learn about cloud forest ecology during a walk on reserve trails and suspended bridges with a local expert. Our explorations will lead us through the lower levels of the forest and onward to its upper story, giving us a comprehensive view of this unique environment and its life forms. Concluding our day's activities we will ride to our hotel and have some time to rest and freshen up before dinner.
Dinner:
At the hotel.
Evening:
At leisure. Prepare luggage for hotel check out and transfer in the morning
Activity Note
Getting on/off a bus; about 120 miles, approximately 5.5 hours total riding time. Getting on/off a pontoon river boat, riding approximately 2 hours; bring a small pair of binoculars for nature viewing.
Breakfast:
At the hotel.
Morning:
After check out we will board the bus and begin our transfer to Manuel Antonio. We will break up the journey with a stop near the mouth of the Tarcoles River in preparation for a Crocodile Safari. We will step off our bus then walk to the dock to board a covered river boat and set off in search of crocodiles and other riverine wildlife along the river banks and mangroves. As we navigate up the river, a local expert will provide background information on the resident crocodiles. The Tárcoles River Basin is one of the most important in the Pacific coastal region, virtually draining the entire western side of the Central Valley. Tárcoles hosts an amazing diversity of wildlife along its banks and in the extensive mangrove ecosystem. Perhaps the most famous of all the river’s inhabitants are its enormous crocodiles (Crocodilus acutus). These crocodiles have been studied by numerous local and foreign specialists and featured in TV series and specials.
Lunch:
At a local restaurant.
Afternoon:
We will return to the bus and continue our transfer to Manuel Antonio. Once we arrive at the hotel we will check in, settle into our rooms, and relax until dinner.
Dinner:
At the hotel.
Evening:

At Santo Domingo we will swap out the bus for 4x4 vehicles and travel on a bumpy, unpaved road to reach the rafting put-in area. After attending a preparatory session with local experts, we will don our gear, then get ready to board the rafts and embark on an invigorating ride paddling down the Savegre River. Each raft will have its own rafting expert who will sit at the back to navigate and direct participants on how and when to paddle. Delight in the swells and dips of the rushing river; a natural roller coaster ride that will make our inner child cheer and laugh out loud (even as you get a good upper-body workout!). At the end of our invigorating river activities we'll climb aboard the 4x4 vehicles and ride back to Santo Domingo. Once there, we will be dropped off at a local home where we will have a chance to change into dry clothes before sitting down for a home cooked meal.
Lunch:
At a local home in Santo Domingo.
Afternoon:
After saying goodbye to our local host, we will board the bus and ride to our hotel for some down time. Once we conclude our field trip we’ll walk back to the hotel to freshen up.
