Yuta and Isana were fantastic tour leaders. Overall, the hotels, food, and excursions were varied and good to great. I learned a lot, and I enjoyed the trip. My only complaint is that the location of the Tokyo hotel and the 2 onsens we stayed at weren't located near our activities. While we had plenty of time at most excursions, the travel time to get to some of the activities was long, and a few felt rushed due to time constraints. The onsens were really beautiful and I'm glad we were able to experience them, though.

I had very good experience on the Northern Japan trip (October 1-13); Our guides Yuta and Isana were kind, thoughtful, and knowledgeable; We thought travel from Tokyo through Aomori was interesting, and rural areas beautiful; enjoyed Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples and related Japanese history evolution; The travel process was efficient- all the train, bus, hotel and restaurant meals went seamlessly; Personally, going forward, we will opt for trips with longer stays in fewer locations; ( we have had a great time in Croatia, Greece and Iceland small boat trips);

Read the trip description carefully and note the emphasis on long drives/train rides to get places. While I saw some interesting things, only two aspects of the trip really stood out for me so I spent a lot of time not very stimulated. The time in Tokyo was not that interesting and you would do well to plan how to use your free time as not much direction is offered. Or perhaps go early and hook up with a food tour and other cultural aspects of Tokyo. I did not feel any connection to the local life and felt like I was just passing through some of the time. It could not be helped that the day at Nippo was in a downpour. The food was mediocre. Well this is just my experience and maybe others from my group will post more favorable reviews. This is not my first RS trip but is one of the most disappointing. I’m adding to this review after reading the book The Phone Booth at the Edge of the World by Laura Imai Messina and realizing that we were in that area of the country. I wish we had been told of this story but urge you to check out the book and this site…what an amazing gift the Wind Phone is and now there are wind phones all over the world. https://bell-gardia.jp/en/

Dear Cathy, We are sorry to hear of your disappointment. Our Northern Japan adventure provides a more comprehensive overview of the region compared to our other Japan offerings. We've conveyed your feedback to be taken into account. Although the itinerary is packed with little downtime, going forward we'll ensure the group leaders have some suggestions for free time in case the daily activities end early. We appreciate the opportunity to delve into your experience further and hope you consider giving us another chance in the near future. Sincerely, Road Scholar

Great program, great guides, many different sights, maybe a little short for flying all the way to Japan.

If you should like to learn about the history and cultural aspects of Japan and to experience variations of its urban and rural environment, this may be your trip too. It was mine.

If you have already been to Tokyo and other parts of Southern Japan, this is a wonderful journey back to other sights in Tokyo and to less-touristy, but beautiful and historical sights to the North.

A great tour. Really immerses you in Japanese culture and takes you to parts of Japan less visited by foreigners. The group leaders Kathleen and Chiaki were first rate. This was my third trip to Japan and felt more immersed in the local culture than when I had traveled in my own. Highly recommend.
