Extended Field Trip to Antibes, Nice
Nice
L,D
Best Western Plus Hotel Massena Nice

Activity note: For our extended field trip, we will keep our rooms in Aix-en-Provence. Packing a small bag for 2 nights and keeping most luggage in Aix-en-Provence is advised. Getting on/off motorcoach; driving about 2 hours. Walking up to 2 miles total throughout the day; cobblestone street, even and uneven terrain.

Breakfast: On your own.

Morning: Setting out via motorcoach, we will stop first in Antibes. Led by an instructor, we will explore the Picasso Museum at the Chateau Grimaldi. There were settlements of different tribes and peoples on this rocky promontory long before the ancient Greeks built Antipolis as a trading post. It prospered under the Romans and survived the Dark Ages to become a stronghold of the Grimaldi family — princes of Monaco — who built the fortified castle that bears their name. The artist Pablo Picasso lived here during 1946, leaving a large number of paintings and drawings in appreciation for his stay, which led to the world’s first Picasso Museum. It has nearly 250 works by Picasso, many donated by his second wife and widow. We will learn about Picasso’s life and see some of the work her complete while living in France.

Lunch: At a local restaurant, we'll have a 2-course plated meal.

Afternoon: We will continue on by motorcoach to Nice, where we will have an orientation drive around the city to see the most interesting sites. We will make a stop at Castle Hill for a panoramic view of the city, and drive along the Promenade des Anglais. We will check-in at our hotel in Nice.

Dinner: At a local restaurant near the hotel, we’ll have a 3-course plated meal.

Evening: At leisure.

DAY

Old Nice, Flower Market, Artisan Shops, St. Paul-de-Vence
Nice
B,L
Best Western Plus Hotel Massena Nice

Activity note: Walking up to 2 miles; cobblestones in the old town. Getting on/off motorcoach.

Breakfast: At the hotel, we’ll have a buffet meal with hot and cold choices, plus juice, coffee, tea, water.

Morning: Led by a local expert, we will head out by motorcoach to the Old Town of Nice for a walking exploration of these quaint historic streets and the famous Marché aux Fleurs (flower market). While at the market, we will have the chance to discover and savor some of the flavors of Nice with stops at artisan shops where local specialties are made.

Lunch: At a local restaurant, enjoy a 2-course plated meal.

Afternoon: We will take a motorcoach to St. Paul-de-Vence. Founded as a Roman oppidum (fortified town), it has changed little in outward appearance since the medieval era. Reminders of its thousand-year-old history abound. Narrow streets winding past ancient houses lead to the Place de la Grande Fontaine in the heart of the village. Contrasting with the past, the Maeght Foundation is an exceptional example of modern cultural achievement. It was founded by art lovers Marguerite and Aimé Maeght to present modern and contemporary art in all its forms. The building was designed by master Catalonian architect Josep Lluís Sert, and the collection includes works by Bonnard, Braque, Calder, Chagall, Giacometti, Miró, and more. Altogether, the Maeght Foundation boasts one of the largest and finest collections of 20th century art in Europe. We will discover this vast collection on a self-guided exploration. We will re-group at a predetermined time and place, and drive to the Matisse Chapel in Vence, on a hillside above Nice. The Chapelle du Rosaire de Vence was a labor of love by Matisse out of gratitude to Monique Bourgeois, the nurse who cared for him after cancer surgery in 1941. They became devoted to one another. Later, Monique entered the religious order of the Dominicans and asked Matisse to advise her in the decoration of their chapel. Instead, the artist took it on as a far greater project. For four years, Matisse dedicated himself to designing every element of the building, regarding the finished chapel as his masterpiece.

Dinner: On your own.

Evening: At leisure. Prepare for check-out and our return transfer to Aix-en-Provence tomorrow.

Aix-en-Provence
B,L
Adagio Aix-en-Provence Centre

Activity note: Getting on/off motorcoach. Walking through Cimiez neighborhood; paved sidewalks, some cobblestones.

Breakfast: Hotel buffet.

Morning: We will set out on a field trip in the Cimiez neighborhood by motorcoach. In ancient times, Cimiez was a Roman town; it eventually developed into one of Nice’s most pleasant areas, attracting aristocrats as well as artists. We will start the morning with a walk around the Monastery Gardens that feature ruins of Nice's Roman past and the Matisse Museum, housed in a 17th-century mansion. Henri Matisse wintered in Nice from 1917 until his death in 1954. As we explore the museum, we will see a large and representative collection of his works. Next, we will ride down Cimiez Hill to the “Musée national message biblique Marc Chagall” (National Museum Marc Chagall Biblical Message). It features scenes from Genesis, Exodus, and the Song of Songs illustrated in 17 large paintings, sculptures, stained glass windows, mosaics and tapestries, along with preparatory sketches, gouaches, engravings, and lithographs — all housed in a museum built especially for these works and opened by the artist in 1972. At the conclusion of the field trip, you may return to the hotel with the motorcoach or remain and explore on your own.

Lunch: Everyone will be given “tickets restaurant” (or meal vouchers) that can be used at select restaurants, bakeries, brasseries and cafes. Choose what you would prefer to eat from any eatery that has a "TR" sticker on the front window to designate that they accept meal vouchers. Change is not given back if your meal cost is less that the value of the voucher provided. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions and directions.
