Afternoon: Depending on your arrival time, your Group Leader may be able to lead you downtown by public transportation or bring you on a short walk around the area of the hotel, pointing out the local transportation depots. At 6:00 PM, meet the group at the hotel for a welcome drink. The remainder of the evening is on your own. Your Group Leader will be happy to assist you regarding restaurants and activities.

Breakfast: On this program, breakfasts will offer a typical European style breakfast buffet with breads, cheeses, cold-cuts, yogurt, fruit, cereals, juice, milk, coffee, tea and water. Water is included in the program cost at all meals.

Morning: This morning take a coach transfer to the Lisbon airport for the flight to Funchal. Upon arrival in Funchal a private coach awaits the group for the transfer to the hotel in Funchal (112 feet), Madeira.

Lunch: Explore local fare on your own.

Afternoon: Orientation walk to the Lido area, where you will see beautiful sights and splendid gardens. This area is absolutely lovely and is considered a leisure zone by locals. It is lined with hotels and bordered by splendid gardens, offering wonderful views of the sea and magnificent sunsets. Before dinner, the Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the program theme, the up-to-date Daily Schedule and any changes, discuss safety guidelines, emergency procedures, roles and responsibilities, and answer any questions you may have. Indicated times are approximate. Program activities, schedules, and personnel may need to change due to local circumstances. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

Activity note: Approximately 3 hours of walking for approximately 5 miles on trails.

Breakfast: Buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Walking field trip along the Levada do Norte through one of the most fertile regions of the island where vineyards alternate with vegetable gardens. Learn about the wine of the region and how the fertile land is cultivated during today's field lecture. Take in breathtaking views from the Cabo Girão viewpoint (1902 feet), the second highest sea cliff in Europe. Below this point, there are small vineyards and vegetable patches that can only be reached by boat. For natives, every bit of land is precious.

Lunch: Plated meal at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: This afternoon, explore the Calheta sugar cane mill and learn about the history of the sugar trade on Madeira. Watch as the factory transforms sugar cane into sugar and then sample some sugar cane products like rum, molasses, and traditional honey cakes.

Dinner: Plated meal at a local restaurant with live Fado singing.

Botanical Garden, Levada da Serra do Faial

Activity note: Approximately 2 hours of walking for approximately 3 miles on trails and paved roads through villages.

Breakfast: Buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Today take an excursion to explore the Botanical Gardens created in the 1960s on the grounds of the Quinta do Bom Sucesso, overlooking the town. Most of the plants are from around the world with a section for indigenous flora. The next destination is Camacha (1200 feet), where we will have a walking field trip along the Levada da Serra do Faial. Upon approaching the village bundles of long canes will be noticed. This area is known as basket country, where wicker working is a traditional industry. Today's field lectures will educate you on the area's indigenous plants and basket weaving.

Lunch: Plated meal at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: Enjoy an excursion to Monte, where we will visit the gardens and church. The twin towers of the church are visible from all over the town of Funchal. The afternoon will end with a fun toboggan run sitting on baskets!

Dinner: Explore local fare on your own. You may take a shuttle into town to try one of the local establishments.

Activity note: Approximately 3 hours of walking for approximately 7 miles on trails.

Breakfast: Buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Travel by coach in the direction of Ribeira Brava, a seaside resort at the mouth of a steep valley. After crossing the plateau “Paúl da Serra” (4921 feet) we start the romantic walk through a wooded area. Learn about the region of Paúl da Serra and its vegetation during a field lecture.

Lunch: Picnic lunch while on the trail.

Afternoon: The coach will transfer the group to Porto Moniz to relax in its large natural bathing pool. Transfer back to the hotel.

Dinner: Buffet at the hotel.

Evening: At leisure.

Activity note: Approximately 3 hours of walking for approximately 5 miles on trails with some stairs and gravel.

Breakfast: Buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Machico is the spot where humans first set foot on the island. Take in a field lecture about Machico. A very nice Levada walk is planned through the fertile landscape before continuing on to Ponta de São Lourenço, where the landscape is drier and looks almost lunar. Stride along the serrated line of cliffs tapering into jagged rocky islets.

Lunch: Special Portuguese BBQ will be served in a local restaurant.

Afternoon: Take this opportunity for personal independent exploration to see and do what interests you most. Please refer to the list of Free Time Opportunities, which can be found in the first Information Packet or on the Road Scholar website. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions and give directions.

Dinner: Explore local fare on your own.

Evening: At leisure.

Gardens of the North

Activity note: Approximately 3 hours of walking for approximately 5 miles on trails and through villages.

Breakfast: Buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Private coach to the green north coast, with a stop on the Pico do Areiro (5964 feet) to experience the magnificent views of the region before continuing on to Ribeiro Frio where hydrangeas and agapanthus line the way for most of the year. A brief walk in the Levada dos Balcões will be made in this area, where many other indigenous plants and bushes reside. Continue to the next stop, Santana, known for its triangular thatched cottages that have become an island icon. Hear field lectures on the geological and botanical aspects of all of these places you see.

Lunch: Plated meal at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: Enjoy a hike along the Levada do Castelejo through picturesque small orchards.

Dinner: Buffet at the hotel.

Evening: At leisure.

Activity note: Approximately 3 hours of walking for approximately 4 miles through town, on uneven surfaces, and cobblestones.

Breakfast: Buffet at the hotel.

Morning: Today we have a walking field trip to the city center. Along the way, we will have the chance to visit some gardens, the cathedral, the main streets, and colorful market of Funchal where vendors selling fish, vegetables, and fruit can be found. After the market, walk along the old town area and view some street art. During today's field lectures, learn about the lifestyle of Funchal's inhabitants, the economics of Funchal and the history of the Funchal Cathedral.

Lunch: Explore local fare on your own in Funchal.

Afternoon: On your own to see and do more of what interests you most, or return to the hotel for a relaxing afternoon around the pool. Your Group Leader will you give further ideas of optional sightseeing in the area.

Dinner: Farewell dinner at a local restaurant.
