Hola! The Galapagos part of the trip was FANTASTIC! Everything was wonderful from crew to food to Luis, our guide. I can not say enough about that part of the trip. For the Peru section I have a few suggestions. In Lima more time at the Larco museum would have been beneficial and less time searching for picarons and cremaladas. That part was un necessary. I also found the travel arrangements within the country lacking. My husband and I were never sitting together on LATAM flights. Long layovers were unnecessary but am sure you have reasons for such. The lectures were fantastic and helpful. One other suggestion is to put in your trip materials a warning about the tourist stamps. We now are renewing our passports, though we should’ve known better! Guide in Peru was excellent but Luis better. Though younger than all of us Luis never treated us like seniors who needed to be taken care of. Thank you for a wonderful trip; we will choose Road Scholar again. Cynthia Norall, PhD

This was a very good program. The activities were fun, the guides were fantastic, and we had a chance to go to two amazing places that were on our bucket list! Every little detail was taken care of us, and we met a lot of new friends along the way. This was our first Road Scholar program, and we will very likely choose more in the future!

I have traveled quite a bit with Road Scholar, and am a huge fan of the trips. This one was outstanding , even for Road Scholar. Galapagos/Equador portion- superb guides and itinerary. The 12 guest group was highly cooperative and compatible, and the dedicated staff were quite amazing, from the Chef to guide Harry to every member of the boat and panga crews. At 74, I was curious about the physical challenges; I need not have worried, the crew was very sensitively helpful to all- including our 2 guests is their 80's. Galapagos is now part of a national park that includes not just the flora and fauna you have heard about, but some facinating history and geography. Highly recommended. Getting to Machu Picchu, a remote location in the mountains, was challenging for me due to the elevation and the travel required. But again, the guides and helpers were pretty amazing! Lima itself is fascinating, and I would definitely do there for a longer period. This whole adventure was a life highlight for me; learning some S. American history and culture, enjoying great and unusual cuisine, seeing amazing animal and plant life, and basically having new worlds opened up for me. 5 stars plus!

This trip was very well planned to the last little detail and the persons involved with the various roles (guides, leaders, drivers etc.) were knowledgeable, helpful, professional and energetic. Both cultural elements and the magnificent magic of nature, environmental issues and social interaction built into this trip were memorable in ways that will continue living in stories to our grandchildren. We were fortunate to have a well meshing group as participants which added to the sense of well-being, adventure and joy on this trip. I got to practice Spanish with chefs, servers, guides, boat tripulación members and all were very helpful in ways that added to the success of this travel experience. May you continue to organize travel to add to the capacity of learning in people of all ages!

I was somewhat concerned about the “let’s go “status but found the leader very helpful and accommodating, and it wasn’t a problem overall. I still can’t decide which I liked better… The Galapagos section or the Peru section. Both sections were life-changing and we were so in love with both areas after seeing them. Great great great service and great great great professionalism… Taking care of every need and beyond. Wonderful program! Glad we signed up for our second one.I’m

These destinations were long-standing "bucket list" places for us, but we weren't really sure that we would ever get there, since we've rarely had the ability to travel outside of the US. We decided to pair this together with our first Road Scholar trip (to Argentina and Chile, focusing on Patagonia ["Finis Terrae"]), since the latter ended in Santiago and this trip started in Quito. We stayed in Quito independently for the two weeks between the tours, taking day tours with local guides to surrounding areas. For this Road Scholar trip, we had several Group Leaders as we moved between separated locales, with Marcos and Eliacin being our (great) main guides for Galapagos and Peru, plus a number of Local Guides and Experts who provided additional lectures, tours, and learning opportunities. Our Galapagos boat was only for our small group of 16, and we went to many stops (I lost count), some being a single visit to an island and others being one of 2 or 3 stops along a larger island. While we obviously did not see unique species that only occur on the other, unvisited islands, we still got to see a very large number of land and sea animals, birds, and plants on our many Zodiak landings, mini-cruises, and snorkeling trips (2 or 3 such activities every day). Incredible. Part 2 took us to Peru with local experts adding substantially to our experiences as we visited the Larco Museum (led by the museum's curator!), numerous old Spanish and Inca sites, ate wonderful local foods, and saw the famous Inca ruins. Those ancient ruins at Machu Picchu and Sacsayhuaman were even more amazing and stupendous in person that we could imagine from photos. The entire experience was well beyond our expectations.

This was an incredible trip of a lifetime! It is impossible to describe or see pictures of the things and places we saw and experienced and have the same impression. There is not a lot of free time because there are so many things included in this trip. You won't want to miss anything. Everyday is filled with something new throughout the day. Early May was the perfect time to do this trip. The guides are phenomenal. We were impressed with how smoothly all the logistics were handled throughout the trip. Being on a catamaran with 16 guests instead of a 40-100 person cruise ship was the best decision we made for this trip.

This trip experience was tops on my bucket list and it far exceeded my expectations. Snorkeling with penguins, sea lions and a wide array of tropical fish was a daily activity. Land wildlife was equally diverse and often seen close-up; like right on our trail. The Sacred Valley was magical, mystical and enlightening. So much history and cultures to take in..Fascinating! I highly recommend this trip.

This was an absolutely amazing trip. Everything was perfect. I loved the Tip Top V, the crew (especially Marco our naturalist, and Fabian our on board waiter and solver of all problems), the wildlife, the water, and the history of the Galapagos, The Machu Picchu portion of the trip was equally spectacular, with excellent lectures, visits to sites and opportunities to meet the local people. I look forward to participating in more Road Scholar adventures, Australia, New Zealand, and the Great Barrier Reef are on my bucket list.

This is an outstanding, informative program, but you really do need to be physically fit enough to pull yourself out of the water onto the dinghy after snorkeling. Taking at least one trekking pole is very helpful on this trip. Many paths are made of large stones and are uneven, and lots of uphill hiking. Our guides were amazing, and were very adept in making accommodations for the different needs within our group. We had 3 people within our group have birthdays on our trip, and our guides made sure each was celebrated well on their special day. A very class act!!

Cynthia – Class of 2003 | Ottawa, Canada
This was a wonderful programme and I am both glad and grateful that I was able to take it. I agree with all the positive comments made by my fellow Road Scholars. I highly recommend this trip to anyone who wants to see the two most iconic locations in South America: the Galapagos Islands and the area around Machu Picchu in southern Peru. However, I do want to make anyone contemplating this programme aware that the physical demands of the programme are considerable. This was the most physically demanding RS programme I have ever taken, and this was something like programme #28 for me in the 22 years I have been travelling with Road Scholar. In the Galapagos, the heat and humidity are very high; in Peru, the altitude and lack of oxygen are stressful on the lungs. I have taken other programmes rated "On the Go", the highest rating, and none of them was nearly as challenging as this one simply because of the climate and the altitude. I was fortunate in the there were always less active options available. When others were snorkeling or kayaking, I could remain in the panga with my camera and binoculars and observe the abundant wildlife. While others were taking a particularly challenging hike in the hot sun, I could sit in the shade on the beach and watch the antics of the numerous sea lion pups. And my fellow Road Scholars always had a steadying arm or shoulder to help me on treacherous paths. They were a wonderful group to travel with. Most of the participants were people who normally lead a very active lifestyle: swimming, cycling, hiking, running, even sky-diving, which is not at all my habit, even though I do exercise regularly. I'm most grateful to my travelling companions and to our guides who advised me on which activities might be problematic for me, and suggested alternatives. I reiterate that this was an excellent programme and I wouldn't have missed it for the world.

5 stars. A wonderful trip! Keep the pace for sure. Just about every second was filled with events. Just two things to think about for future trips: 1. The art activity in Quito was really pointless. We were given models of the mother of Jesus and told to paint it. We politely painted away, and then the item was tossed back at the hotel. Drop this activity. Would have preferred more exploration in the city. 2. The final dinner in Cuzco with the dancers. The food was not up to the high standards of the other restaurants, and the program was touristy and not really an authentic take on the culture of Peru. The musician, Darwin, who demonstrated the flutes and other indigenous instruments that afternoon was much more interesting, and I would have enjoyed a performance of his local group much more. 3. Our local guides were great, and kept everything organized and running smoothly. The Tip Top V was very comfortable, the crew was outstanding and the chef did a wonderful job with the food. This is our second trip with your company and we will be doing more. Galapagos just an amazing, incredible place, and Machu Picchu and the sacred valley the experience of a lifetime.

Bucket list trip of a lifetime! Two completely different trips and experiences in one adventure. Fantastic guides and great lectures. Small group travel is our preferred tour size. We thoroughly read all materials sent by RS and took the requirements to physically prepare ourselves. Unfortunately, not all members of our group were up to the physical demands and missed out on some of the activities. The lodging accommodations were very nice. We were provided with way more food than we were able to eat but everything was delicious. We really enjoyed our time on the Tip Top V in the Galapagos which was a magical experience. We would highly recommend this trip. The only recommendation would be to offer an alternative version of this trip for photographers as we were rushed keeping up with the group.

I have to say that I didn’t pay any attention to what boat we were going to be on in the Galapagos, but the yacht the Tip Top V was just fantastic. With only 12 passengers on our trip, it was so much better that any luxury cruise. I loved the snorkeling & the variety of both sea & land life we got to see. I also loved not just Machu Picchu but all of the Sacred Valley in Peru. There is so much more there than just Machu Picchu. This was a dream trip of a lifetime for me. I am thrilled to have been a part of the trip and to have met 12 new friends. One should be in good physical condition. What I found traveling in October was the sweatshirt and jeans were unnecessary; take only a light rain jacket and hiking pants and shorts. Bring 2 one-piece swimsuits and rent the full wet suit. Practice hiking, stair-climbing or snorkeling if you don't already because you will want to enjoy every moment.

This was a wonderful trip! We got to see both the amazing things that people can create, at Machu Picchu, and the incredible creations of the natural world in the Galapagos. This trip will stay with me as an inspiration to continue traveling and learning about the world.

I highly recommend this trip! It felt like two trips in one. The Galapagos was the main reason I took this trip and I decided to add on Peru. The whole trip was fantastic! The first class yahct experience on the Tip Top V is one that I will never forget. Seeing the wildlife at such close range in the wild was an experience I have never had. I snorkeled for the second time in my life and got many really good pictures of turtles swimming with me underwater.

I had a marvelous experience. I had intended that Peru was my highlight and the Galapagos was an add-on, but in fact the opposite turned out to be true. The boat, crew, food and experiences were stunning. The physical requirements are real - you will be climbing, getting in/out of boats, and generally pushing yourself but it is so worth it. And the guides were so knowledgable and inclusive of all members of the tour. Simply amazing!

The Galápagos and Peru program that Road Scholar offers is amazing! The group leaders were so knowledgable, fun and caring, nand I learned so much! The two parts of the program were so different - the Galápagos all about nature and Peru and Machu Picchu all about history and culture. I loved every minute!

This trip lived to all I hoed for and more. The snorkeling was incredible - hammerheads, iguanas, turtles, sea lions, cormorants, and beautiful fish. Galapagos stunned me with the wildlife just waiting for us. The guides were informative, helpful and added amazement to the trip. I could not have been more pleased with the adventure!

This program was an amazing way to see Galapagos and Machu Pichu in depth. Trying this on your own would save money, but would be difficult due to all the regulations imposed by the Equadorian and Peruvian Governments when you visit these sites.

Do not miss out on this adventure - Galapagos, Peru, Machu Picchu! It is well-beyond fulfilling a "bucket list." This was a very full bucket, indeed. As usual, Road Scholar excelled in its role exposing the participants to new tastes, sounds, art culture, music and accommodations. The guides were exceptional on all levels. I would take this trip again with no hesitations.

FABULOUS! Galapagos Islands: Perfect dry weather in February. The high points were see the unique animals (or which there were many sightings) and snorkeling every day. The water temperature was 70 degrees. The Tip Top II was very well maintained and comfortable (expect very small quarters but nice common spaces). The crew was very friendly and efficient. Victor Mendes is an above average naturalist. There is a A LOT of walking on uneven surfaces so you should skip this trip if you have balance or mobility issues. Peru: We saw many different areas with Machu Picchu being the highlight. It is beyound description and takes your breath away. The side trips to museums, etc. were very education. There is a lot of walking on uneven surfaces and a lot of ancient steps that are uneven and different heights. Walking and standing is the norm each day. Beware of altitutde sickness -- almost every one had problems to some degree and oxygen was required by at least 2 people in the tour.

I was worried that I (age 72 and overweight) had exceeded my physical abilities when I signed up for the trip. But our longest walk was only 2 hours.(Walks should be given in hours, not miles. There was no 5-6 miles in one day.) There were 4 of us (out of 11) who used hiking poles and those helped a lot with stairs, hills and rocks. There was only one walk on Galapagos that was extremely rocky, but our guide went slow with a few of us and we only did half the distance. Overall, it was a great experience and great trip.

Just back from #18484 Galapagos and Machu Picchu. This is an amazing 17 day adventure that should be done with eyes open to all the wonders it has to offer. Two very different and interesting adventures. The Galapagos Islands showed us plants and animals you can't see elsewhere, and although the local environment is a bit severe, the accommodations on Galaxy II are "top shelf." Machu Picchu (and Peru) showed us the history (as reflected in the archeology and descendants of the Incas) of a prior civilization.
