"Beyond the Pharaohs" was an astonishing experience that fulfilled a lifelong dream to see Egypt. We chose it over other tours because it combined the expertise of an Egyptologist with opportunities to see early prototype pyramids as well as the famous trio, Alexandria's library and catacombs, Luxor and Karnak and sailing the Nile, and the amazing Abu Simbel Temple relocated from a valley because of the High Dam. What an eye-opening and enjoyable two weeks.

For an experience that will make memories for years, go to Egypt with Road Scholar. To stand in the presence of art created nearly 5,000 years ago is a moment you will never forget. The education, organization, and outstanding leadership of scholars will ensure and enhance a mark-making memory of a lifetime!

The Egypt tour is fantastic. An ancient culture little explored by westerners. Do it! You'll like it!

This is a fairly fast paced and thorough coverage of Egypt for a 2 week package. It has Road Scholar's usual good coverage of the history and culture of the region, and very competent leadership

Travel to Egypt now! You will feel totally safe in this country. Our guide, Amal El Far, was terrific - so helpful and so knowledgeable. Cats are everywhere. They sleep on monuments and follow you around. Amal says Egypt still has a national love affair with cats. The Egyptian people are warm and friendly to Americans. Many speak fluent English. Road Scholar will take good care of you. I had an allergic reaction while on tour. Road Scholar quickly found a specialist to treat me. The pyramids, monuments and museums are spectacular. You will enjoy the camel ride, Nile cruise and felucca excursion. This trip may be exhausting but one you should not miss!

My experience on the Road Scholar program, "Beyond the Pharaohs" exceeded my wildest expectations. We were guided by a wonderful, expert Egyptologist, Ahmet Bekheet. And to be present among all those ancient sites--WOW! Bucket List #1-checked!!

Wonderful opportunity to explore the past history of Egypt and civilization as it progressed plus the current problems Egypt faces.

We loved every minute of this tour. Egypt is a wonderful country full of magnificent cultural monuments. We felt very safe throughout due to tourist police assigned to us and to all tourist sites. The weather was cool and rain-free as well.

I have participated in many tours/cruises to learn about other cultures and history. Enjoyed every one and learned many things. This tour surpasses all because of its content and excellent management. My fellow travelers and I kept repeating one word out loud and I know silenitly that describe what we experienced “awesome.”

Beyond the Pharaohs: Egypt Past and Present. # 12778 This trip was beyond my expectations. Our leader and Egyptologist, Ahmed Hamdy Borham, was the best Road Scholar leader and teacher. His enthusiasm for his subject was infectious. I lost my IPhone on a bus from the hotel to the airport for our domestic flight to Luxor. I told Ahmed and his reply was that you will get it back. I was not so certain and was in damage control changing passwords using my IPad. I left it in God’s hands and continued to enjoy the trip. Ahmed used me to play Isis in one of his teaching methods of understanding the gods of Egypt after the skit he told me that my phone had been found. It had fallen out of a pocket and was wedged between the wall of the bus and the seat. He, also, stated that 3 other groups had used that bus. Tears, hugs, gratitude for the team you have created for our Egyptian experience. The phone was returned at the baggage pick up area when I claimed my luggage and Ids checked, AMAZING AND I BELIEVE A GOD MOMENT. The tour was magnificent. Our cruise down the Nile was relaxing and enlightening. I learned so much and better understand the poorer countries. We were treated so well that I am an ambassador for the Road Scholar Trip to Egypt. Please know that Ahmed Hamdy Borham and his Road scholar people are the best of the best. Thank you, Marcia Beth Blink

You will not regret taking this trip! The itinerary was inclusive with Cairo, Alexandria and Abu Simbel. The accommodations were luxurious and Hala was a credit to the organization with her knowledge, organizational skills, sense of humor and adaptability. I felt safe the entire time and Egypt loves the American visitors. The history and culture of Egypt is beyond description. The value for your money is exceptional.

The Egypt Trip, Beyond The Pharoahs offered by Road Scholar fulfilled a childhood dream for me Actually walking into the Great Pyramid, exploring the temples in the Valley of the Kings, and so much more...these were all pinch me moments for me. The people of Egypt were welcoming and gracious and our guide Ahmet was passionate about his job and his country. If going to Egypt has been your dream, don't wait, go now. It truly is the experience of a life time.

Diana
(5)

This was an outstanding event. Ahmed is very knowledgeable about all aspects of ancient and modern Egypt and showed consideration for the group's needs. Egypt is a very important part of the development of Western civilization and merits study. This tour gave insight to the existentialist influence within ancient Egypt.

Catherine
(5)

We thoroughly enjoyed this program. The group leader was outstanding. There is lots of walking, up and down steep steps that are not in good repair, and across sand and rocks, so good walking shoes are essential. All of the field trips were amazing, and the preparation by our group leader helped us understand what we were seeing. Recommend highly.

Deborah
(5)

Amazing trip in every way! All of our needs were anticipated and met. The days were full of enriching experiences that greatly enhanced our understanding of the history of civilization. I would encourage anyone to consider taking this trip!

I highly recommend Road Scholar if Egypt is on your bucket list. The accommodations, food and service are top notch. The learning experiences are numerous, relevant and interesting. The guide and the instructors are sure to teach you at least a few things you did not know before you went. And the Egyptian people were friendly and happy to see us. I felt as safe or safer on this program as I have felt anywhere I have traveled.

Both a bucket list and childhood dream destination. The group leader, Manol Khalil, was terrific in all regards. The program exceeded expectations in the number of places seen as well as educational components.

If you're thinking of visiting Egypt you couldn't do better than the Beyond the Pharaohs: Egypt Past and Present with Hala el Sayed as your guide. You are in for a busy, exciting, informative trip! You'll visit numerous pyramids, temples, and tombs. You'll hear from experts on Egypt past and present. You'll eat like kings and queens, stay in very comfortable accommodations, and enjoy pleasant, seamless movement from one place to another.

This program had to be one of the best Road Scholar has to offer. I recommend to anyone. nwd

James

This program total exceeded my expectations. Hanan El Deeb, the primary Road Scholar instructor on the trip, is a wealth of information and a unique individual who can provide information about the various areas being visited and ensure operational details flow smoothly. It was wonderful to have free time available to go out on your own and interact with the general populace of Egypt. I advise people to prepare for the trip by reading in advance about the areas that will be visited so you have a foundation of knowledge to expand upon. There is SO much to see and enjoy in Egypt. I can't wait to go back to Egypt and see / experience more about the people, history, and culture.

Mary Beth

This program -Beyond the Pharohs- is a thorough exploration of the monuments and history of Ancient Egypt with a bit of modern Egypt thrown in. (The astounding new library in Alexandria!) You will be very active but you will see much more than the usual tourist.

Numerous friends expressed surprise, and even concern, when I mentioned my plans to do the Egypt tour due to fears about the security situation in the Muslim world. I found the Egyptian people to be very welcoming, and I never once felt any concern about security during the trip. I unhesitatingly recommend Road Scholar's Egypt program. I went with high expectations and the program far exceeded them! For one thing the group was led by a fully qualified Egytologist who did a great job of focusing us in on particular aspects of historically and culturally significant art amidst the literally overwhelming wealth of ancient artifacts available to be seen up close.

Ann

This was a marvelous trip, even better than I expected. I went to Egypt to see the pyramids, but saw and learned so much more.

Carolyn
(5)

What an outstanding opportunity to explore Egypt, learn about its history and people and immerse ourselves in ancient sites. Our group leader, Tarek Fawzy was incredible. He managed all of the details, personalities and activities with ease. His depth of knowledge of antiquities and the history of Eqypt was amazing. He was also an excellent ambassador for Egypt - his love of his country was evident. This is a trip of a lifetime.

Pictures may be worth 1,000 words....but SEEING the real thing is priceless! This truly was the trip that I had only ever dreamed of taking. Our guide, Ghada Doss, expertly led us on an adventure back in time. So many experiences packed into two weeks - sights, smells, tastes - we learned so much, felt safe and cared for, and were astounded by the Egyptians.

This fantastic, energetic trip brought history life. The tour guide, Hala El Sayed, was informative, interesting, extremely well organized and personable. She did many special things for an ill traveler as well as when my initial flight was cancelled and didn't arrive until 3 am the next morning. She arranged an airport pickup and food in the room. Quite a welcome surprise since I expected to fend for myself. Egypt is a marvelous place to visit and revel at the Great Pyramid, tombs, and well preserved monuments that depict life in early Egypt. Nothing better than seeing Cairo at night or "the real Luxor" at night. The Nile cruise was magical and peaceful. Can't beat the beautiful hotels with great food. One of best trips yet.

Dear Road Scholar, We have just completed program 12788 in Egypt, led by Ahmed Hamdy Barsoum. We are writing to let you know that Ahmed is the best of the best. We have been on around 10 Road Scholar programs, and countless mainstream tours. Ahmed was without doubt the most talented and memorable leader we have ever had. He is a wonderfully trained Egyptologist who combines subject-matter expertise, humor, dynamism and flexibility. He was able to provide us with factually correct information, while animating the stories in an unforgettable way. He made us feel like we were a part of the history - putting us in the roles of those building the pyramids, for example. We really felt like we were there. No member of our tour arrived late for our activities because we did not want to miss a minute. He expertly used the diverse professional backgrounds in our group to engage them in our learning process - often in humorous ways. He repeatedly reminded us to invite friends at home to visit Egypt. With leaders like him, we come home singing the country's - and Road Scholar's - praises. Shukran (thank you) Road Scholar for providing us with such a memorable experience. We can't wait to come back. Yalla binna (let's go)! Warmly, Sanders and Kathy Fischer Davis

How amazing to wake up our first morning in-country to a view of the Pyramids! And the trip just continued to exceed my expectations. Our tour guide, Amr Shahin, was excellent--a very knowledgable Egyptologist who is an excellent communicator, funny, and kind. There was nothing he wouldn't do to make the trip the best experience for each and everyone in the group whatever their needs and wants. We saw and experienced so much in two weeks that my brain went into information overload. The Egyptians were friendly and welcoming, the accommodations were superior, the security measures throughout the country and especially for our group were reassuring, the sites we saw astounding. I could go on and on, but I will just say, "Run! Don't walk to sign up for the trip. Yalla bina!"

RoadScholar tours are well organized and very safe. Great accommodations with good food. Guides are well educated in their field. All in all a great value for what is offered.

James
(5)

What a wonderful experience. I learned far more than I expected and saw far more than I hoped. The accommodations and food were much better than I had imagined. Most of all, our guide did the best possible job to make sure that we were prepared, informed, entertained and safe. I am very glad that I took this trip.

Our group leader Hanaan, an Egyptian Egyptologist provided one of the best learning experiences I have had. I am a retired professor and learned so much!!!! You will not be disappointed, this is an extraordinary experience. In addition all the Road Scholar folks were beyond helpful helping us easily navigate through airports, security, and more. They were friendly & caring. I do recommend wearing a face mask when the air is bad in Cairo for anyone sensitive to air quality.

My wife and I, for the past 40+ years, have always traveled alone, thinking group travel was not for us. Two friends persuaded us to give the RS Beyond the Pharaohs tour a try. We quickly learned that all our negative perceptions of group travel to be absolutely wrong. The Beyond the Pharaohs Egyptian tour is, without a doubt, the most memorable two weeks of travel we've ever had. With this being our first such tour, we really can't make any comparisons, but I can't imagine there could be any better tour leader than Hassan Bar. His knowledge of ancient Egypt, coupled with his drive and enthusiasm in explaining the customs, religions, successes, and challenges of modern-day Egypt impressed everyone in our group. Although I'd like to say that Hassan, single handedly, made us now, life-long RS clients, credit must also be given to what must be an army of behind the scenes people who drove the buses, moved us through airports, checked us into our hotels and cruise ship, provided security, prepared excellent meals, presented numerous lectures, and in short, made our two-week stay incredibly pleasant and trouble-free. It's no secret that the threat of terrorism around the world, but particularly in the Middle East, has had a huge, negative impact on Egyptian tourism. During our stay, at no time was there any hint of danger. There was a very visible, and extensive level of security evident throughout the country. RS also saw to it that we had our own security everywhere we went, whether checking into our hotel, on the road to different sites, and at whatever site we were visiting. The threat of terrorism in Egypt should NOT be a reason to postpone a visit to this wonderful country.

I recently took the Road Scholar tour: Beyond the Pharaohs:Egypt Past and Present and it was wonderful. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning about Egypt past and present. I know some folks might be nervous but there is no need. Tourists are well protected most especially by the fact that Egyptians are lovely, welcoming people. We are as safe there as we are at home.

John

This trip is an outstanding value for visiting one of the world's most historically fascinating and safe countries. The combination of a free flight credit and the current dollars-to-Egyptian-pounds exchange rate make it difficult to beat!

The Egyptian tour was all that it claimed to be. We saw "wonderful things" and expanded our knowledge of a history that spans 6000 years. Worth every penny and more.

This was a great introduction to the highlights of Egypt, from Pyramids and Pharaohs to main cities and the Nile. Our egyptologist helped us feel the history we were seeing, and the Nile cruise topped the experience of understanding the importance of this river, the lifeblood of Egypt. Definitely an excellent tour for a new visitor.

Donna
(5)

The Egypt Past and Present trip was Marvelous! It was everything I had hoped for and even more! One is immersed into the culture from the beginning to the end! Highlights for me were ascending and descending into a pyramid, seeing the tombs in the Valley of the Kings, riding on a camel, sailing down the Nile, and sailing on a Felucca! Our travel group was treated as if we were a family.

What a fabulous trip this is! You will be amazed by all you will see. The first day is the pyramids, and it just gets better from there! Hassan Bar was our guide/Egyptologist, and he is wonderful. You will feel completely safe. Tourism is a major business in Egypt, so they really look after their tourists. One of the other reviews suggests bringing $50 in one dollar bills, and that is an excellent suggestion. Great food and very welcoming and friendly people.

Susan

Just returned from this wonderful tour of Egypt. Although many of our friends at home were concerned for our safety- we never were. It is very safe to visit Egypt. The local Egyptians are very interested in having Americans return to travel there and are very friendly. We visited all the important sites in history and our tour guide was so very knowledgeable. The weather in November was perfect and accommodations and food was very good. If you've been wanting to tour Egypt - GO!

Deborah
(5)

This is an exceptionally well-organized trip that was led by a well-educated, knowledgeable guide. The entire experience from beginning to end was interesting and proceeded at a pace that allowed use to see and experience the best that Egypt had to offer. I would recommend this trip to anyone with an interest in Egypt's rich historical past.

Website appears to me to be well organized and response time is good.

The trip of a lifetime--safe (tourist police followed our bus and a security person was on our bus in Cairo), happy Egyptians, great weather, and very affordable. Being where Moses was found, where Mary and Joseph traversed, and where the Rosetta Stone was found were all very moving. Don't miss this trip where the sun shines every day!

Nicole
(5)

This was the trip of a lifetime - a perfect mix of history, art, culture, and scenery. There was never a moment I didn't feel safe. Our guide, Amr Shahin, was a joy to travel with. Not only is he extremely knowledgeable about all things Egypt, his love for Egypt is palpable and contagious - and his sense of humor and flexibility and attention to our curiosity made the trip feel like a two week adventure rather than just an itinerary. I recommend this trip without hesitation.

Terica

All I can say is Wow! This should be a must on your bucket list to see. They take very great care of you, stay at very nice hotels, and the program activities allows you to see so much of Egypt. It was an amazing experience.

Amazing trip with excellent guide, Amr, who shared so much of his knowledge with us. The people are so friendly, the pyramids so big, and the Nile such a life line in Egypt. Exceeded my expectations.

This program was AWESOME! Our Egyptologist Ahmed Hamdy Borham took it over the top by sharing is vast knowledge with us in such a wonderful way. I came home wanting to learn more. Everything about this program was just incredible, from the sights we saw to the people on our trip. I highly recommend this trip to anyone interested in Egypt.

William
(5)

The country of Egypt was very welcoming to our Road Scholar tour group. Ahmed Hamdy, Egyptologist, was an exceptionally outstanding Program Director. Every aspect of the trip was well organized, and we were well prepared by Ahmed for the historical wonders we toured. We felt very safe and enjoyed the group we traveled with. I cannot say enough nice things about the professionalism of our Program Director, and the efficiency and organization of the entire tour that RS hosted.

Forrest

Road Scholar is outstanding in providing an almost infinite selection of well described and interesting trips on their easy to use website.

William
(5)

This is a wonderful trip and has it all from Alexandria on the Mediterranean coast to Abu Simbel close the the southern border with Sudan. You'll see all the must-sees and even get to ride a camel by the Giza pyramids and sail the Nile in a felucca. All this with informative guides, lecturers, and security staff there to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable trip of a lifetime.

Suzanne
(5)

As always, RS did a great job in education, programming and coordination. Egypt is a country of contradictions - priceless artifacts all around, yet not well conserved. The desert is striking, the economic conditions startling. If Egypt is on your bucket list, this is the trip to take!

Paul

Outstanding program. Well organized. Well executed. You will throughly enjoy every moment

The Road Scholar Egypt trip was a highlight of my world travels - it is a must see place, especially now before the hordes of tourist return - at some point in time!

Sharon
(5)

"Beyond the Pharoahs" was everything I hoped for in a first visit to Egypt. I came away having seen all of the classic sites of ancient Egypt and also having gained insight into the country's place in today's world. Our guide was top notch, very knowledgeable and congenial.

Minnetta
(5)

This tour was an amazing experience. I learned so much not only about Egyptian antiquities but about current Egyptian life. The accommodations were outstanding and the fellow participants a delight.

Mary Beth
(5)

This is an incredibly comprehensive look at the wonderful antiquities of Egypt. You will love seeing and learning about the amazing history of this beautiful country. Also seeing the entire country from north to south and traveling on the beautiful Nile. If you have always wanted to see Egypt and enjoy comfortable travel, this is the trip for you.

Shirley
(5)

This trip fulfilled a desire to see and learn more since the TUT exhibit toured the US years ago. Nothing compares with actually climbing into a pyramid, going into a tomb, or being in an ancient temple. An accomodating, well-informed guide brought it all together. You can even check "riding a camel" off your bucket list!

John
(5)

What a wonderful trip! We saw historic sites dating back over 5,000 years including pyramids, temples, museums, mosques, a Coptic monastery, the Valley of the Kings, Abu Simbel, Aswan Dam, and Luxor as well as the modern cities of Cairo and Alexandria. We rode on camels, sailed on a felucca, and cruised on the Nile. From the moment we arrived, Road Scholar was there to take care of us. Our hotels were among the finest we have stayed at. There was a wide variety of good food with lots of choices. We were provided with security during the trip, although we felt as safe as if we were visiting any city in the U.S. Our guide and Egyptologist, Ahmed, was extremely knowledgeable, patient in answering all of our questions, and had a wonderful sense of humor. In the 15 years that we have been traveling with Road Scholar, he is one of the best guides we have ever had! It was a great time to visit Egypt because crowds were small, things were inexpensive, and people were friendly to foreigners. We enjoyed the small group of only 20 people on our tour.

Linda
(5)

Egypt is safe. Road Scholar and the Egyptian government assured our safety with assigned security personnel throughout the trip. Our guide, Ibrahim, was an amazing source of knowledge about Egypt's past and present. He was organized, a problem solver, and patient in answering our thousands of daily questions. We heard experts on the underwater recovery of artifacts in Alexandria, a geologist, a sociologist, and an expert in Islam who all answered our many questions . Accommodations, food, and transportation were all top notch from a hotel with views of the Pyramids at Giza to a four day trip down the Nile on the MS Mayfair to several upscale hotels in Alexandria and Cairo. Weather in April varied from 60-90 degrees. Moisture wicking clothes and sun protection are essential. Lines for museums, temples, and pyramids were short and manageable because Ibrahim secured our group tickets and tourism is less than it was before 2011. Security at all airports in Egypt was intense but somewhat inconsistent throughout Egypt. Take at least $50 in U.S. ones for vendors as small Egyptian change is not readily available. EgyptAir does not open at JFK until 3 hours before a scheduled flight so plan accordingly or you'll have a long wait at the airport. If you have always wanted to see Egypt: GO!

Marian
(5)

This program on Egypt was worth every penny. We did a lot of pre-trip preparation with videos and reading, but being there was the best. All that we saw and experienced was topped by the quality of the leader and the special presenters.

Karen
(5)

This trip's itinerary was amazing! Our Group Leader, Ahmed, was extremely knowledgeable and skilled as an instructor about Egypt, its history, and the incredible sites that we visited. He readily answered any question and shared his knowledge freely. Logistics are well managed. Our group of 21 people was very compatible. I felt quite safe throughout the trip--there were some armed security staff provided on certain days of our trip. Air travel arrangements via Road Scholar were a little challenging in part because we needed a travel deviation at the end of the itinerary. Be aware that Egyptair at JFK does not open their check in desks until approximately 3-4 hours prior to departure, and that mobile check in and bag drop services are not available if you will have a long layover prior to the JFK-CAI flight.

Gloria
(5)

The trip to Egypt was more amazing than we imagined. We felt very safe--security is everywhere; and best of all, the important sites are not crowded. Here is a link to some of our pictures: www.flickr.com/photos/gloriaboddy/albums

Diane
(5)

Overall an amazing experience. Excellent guide, excellent accommodations, food, companions, very safe, Road Scholar has blown me away yet again.

Dorothy
(5)

This was an excellent program. The weather was in 60's Deg. F range in mid-February. A bathing suit wasn't used. Egypt Air flights occur infrequently so our return flight to JFK arrived about 1:30 PM NY time, but 8:30 PM Egyptian time. I should have stayed in NY overnight instead of getting a flight to Chicago later that day. I arrived in Chicago at 10:30 PM (6:30 AM) Cairo time. This took a great physical/mental toll on me. Luckily, I chose to stay the night at the Chicago airport and return home the following day. It would have been easier on me to stay the night in NY and return to Chicago the next day.

Sheryl
(5)

If you always wanted to go to Egypt but have worried about being safe there, GO! I traveled as a single 70 year old woman and I felt completely safe the whole trip. The Egyptian people were warm, friendly and grateful that we were there. The Road Scholar took excellent care of us with a security guard on the bus.

Carol
(5)

This was a trip of a lifetime (to Egypt) and I will always remember the thrill of it.

Elizabeth

This trip to Egypt, a long-time dream for me, great exceeded my expectayions. The guide, Amr, was experienced in the subject matter and a had a terrific ability to bring the past to life for us. He is passionate about Egypt - past and present - and he generously shared his passion with us.

Liz

If you can take only one major international trip, this is the one! You will never forget it.

Kathryn

A thoroughly fabulous trip from start to finish!

Egypt is a magical destination. Forget everything you've heard about safety and prepare to be awed by the experience. The people are welcoming, facilities excellent, and sights are beyond expectation.

Sandra
(5)

Second time on this trip (2013) and totally enjoyed the experience as much as the first. It was a little easier this time as I wasn't as totally overwhelmed. Wonderful experience, go now while the crowds are still small.
