Don't miss the opportunity to visit Costa Rica. So diverse in its
different regions. It's much more than its wildlife. The people are
warm and passionate about their country.

The Best of Costa Rica: Natural Wonders program is a great introduction to the country and to Road Scholar programs. The guide and local instructors are simply the best, and Road Scholar takes care of absolutely all aspects of the trip--we just had to show up. We learned so much, had a great time, made new friends, and came home inspired. I'd recommend this program to anyone!

This is a program that will help you understand the beauty of our planet, the challenges it faces, and how some remarkable people are trying to do their part to meet the challenges.

This trip is well organized and well led. We enjoyed it enormously. I was moved and inspired by the activities and the lectures. The leader, Alex, is top notch and his understanding of the ecosystem, the birds, mammals, insects, amphibians as well as the plants we saw was breathtaking! The hotels and food were excellent. This is a very active trip and I would say that to potential participants. It's go, go, go, and we feel as though we learned so much we will spend a lot of time thinking about the content and the people we met in the beautiful country of Costa Rica. If you love wildlife and ecological science, and are ready to get up early and keep moving, and appreciate the perspectives of those in another culture, this trip is for you!

Great tour! Beyond the beautiful and unique flora and fauna, tours and lecturers explained history and economy of the country. I would go again. Two caveats -- you move every 48 hours to be able to visit various areas of Costa Rica, so if you hate to unpack and repack, this is not the tour for you. It was totally worth if for me to get to see so much in a short period of time! Secondly, the sun rises year round at 5:30 AM and sets at 5:30 PM. This means tours, especially nature tours, start early -- eg 6 AM. You have to get up when the animals do. If you're someone who likes to sleep in, pick another tour. The weather is usually warm, but pack a sweatshirt just in case. I've taken 5 RS tours and this was one of my favorites.

This tour covers a lot of ground including both coasts, rainforests and a volcano region. Our guide, Gilberth was always kind. He knows his country very well and always had time to help me with the bird IDs along the way. Costa Rica has many national parks and really works to take care of nature. It is a very special place.

I really enjoyed our Costa Rica adventure. Our leader, Fabian, could not have been more knowledgeable or accommodating, and our fellow travelers were all friendly and interesting. The various educational activities were informative, with the up-close bat encounter a top highlight, as was the river rafting trip which was more exciting than I had expected (in a good way). As we have found with these trips, there were a lot of early mornings and limited chances to relax or explore on our own, but that's the flip side of having so many activities packed into a trip. I would recommend this trip to anyone willing to make the effort.

“The Best of Costa Rica” turned out to be one of our best Road Scholar trips! Truly Pura Vida! The variety of locations and activities made for an amazing journey with our fellow travelers. I loved everything about the program but especially our wonderful guide, Alvaro, with his in-depth knowledge about everything Costa Rican, his adept organizing and his keen sense of humor. Alvaro could not only spot and identify an extraordinary number of birds, animals and flora, but also tell us in interesting details about everything we were seeing. The trip was a great way to start 2026!

My Mom and I traveled together to Costa Rica and had a great time. Our guide Edwin Duarte was knowledgable, efficient and fun. He shared personal stories and enriched the itinerary by welcoming serpendipitous animal sightings and civic events and turning them into educational experiences. The lecturers were all excellent and I learned a great deal. Our driver Diego was skilled and conscientious. I would absolutely recommend this itinerary for anyone wishing to learn about Costa Rica and its wonderful culture and breathtaking natural world.

The Best of Costa Rico was my 3rd RS program and was my best. Exploring the great bio-diversity of CR was exciting as we discovered animal life in the water, on land, and in the air though a wide variety of climates and terrain. The range and depth of the educational lectures made them very worthwhile. Our Group Leader, Edwin Duarte, was very knowledge and expanded the depth and fun of the program. I highly recommend it.

The overall trip exceeded our expectations. Our tour guide - Alvaro Alvarado was outstanding - 5 Stars. His enthusiam and knowledge of Costa Rica are unmatched. Dinners, tours and lectures were always on time upon our arrival and all were very interesting and appropriate for the trip. All selected local experts were extremely knowledgable. The trip was well done!
One suggestion for improvement - include bluetooth audio connection for those people who wish to bring their own ear buds or headphones. The provided audio device is awkward to carry & use.

Costa Rica was our first Road Scholar trip and it absolutely exceeded our expectations! The knowledge and passion of our leader, Alex, to share and teach about his country was inspiring. I am so glad that I had this opportunity to go.

If you want a deep dive into the natural wonders of Costa Rica, this tour is for you! Thanks to our expert guide, we had up close encounters with a number of animals and were able to view them -- just as good as a safari in Africa. We saw everything from monkeys to more than 100 species of birds including the endangered Scarlet Macaw to iguanas, crocodiles and the very cute agouti. Don't sit on the beach (although we did that, too a little bit) - get transported to some of the most remote parts of the tropical rainforest, explore the mossy ethereal world of a Cloud Forest and meet Costa Ricans and find out why they are so passionate about their country--it is stunningly beautiful and incredibly interesting!

The best trip of my life! I really loved "The Best of Costa Rica: Exploring Natural Wonders" tour. Our group of 10 shared 12 days of nature in a wide variety of settings and experiences. Great activities, super learning situations and met so many lovely people.
— Review left January 22, 2026
Our group leader Eric Miranda used a white board that made the details of each day very clear, With all the details on such a trip having the white board to follow by snapping some pictures of it made each day quite enjoyable. Nice touch.

Our group of 18 travelers was good-natured, enthusiastic, flexible, curious, savvy, respectful, and ready to go. I found them to be exceptionally authentic people. We were led by an experienced guide, who had the right skills, and insights to lead us as we explored the unique culture and abundant natural habitat that is Costa Rica. Vinny shared his own story and provided significant historical and community information though out. The people we met from this beautiful land were engaging, highly resourceful, friendly, and generous. Our group was welcomed into several homes, where were learned about their life journeys and how they made a living. They offered true hospitality. Overall we had delicious meals. Accommodations were in appealing settings, which we shared with native species.
There were a plethora of experiences and activities that were fascinating to me including the personal stories of presenters, who were focused on eco friendly endeavors from cultivating black pepper, chocolate, and coffee, to preserving local bat populations. Highlights for me included the early morning canal safari in Tortuguera immersed in the calm rainforest before the sun’s heat intensified, the invigorating white water rafting on the Sarapiqui River, and the Cloud Forest experience.
Everyone had a sense of humor and led with kindness at the heart of it all. Thank you to all of you, who shared this journey with me including our bus driver, Walter, who faithfully transported us. I am grateful to my sons for this gift.
— Review left January 21, 2026
As a nature lover, I found this program outstanding. Every experience was wonderful. Vinnie, our leader, was extremely knowledgeable about the history, culture, and environment of Costa Rica. He had a great sense of humor and kept us well informed and engaged. Our driver, Walter, was very nice and very skilled at navigating tight turns, rough roads, and heavy traffic. He even helped me practice my rather weak Spanish!
I never imagined I would get to see so much wildlife. By the end of the first day in Tortuguero, we had seen all three species of monkeys, several iguanas, countless birds, and caimans. The people of Costa Rica are very friendly and so polite. I felt really good about supporting a country that has made conservation a top priority. It was fascinating to see the ways eco-tourism can help people and wildlife coexist. I absolutely recommend this program to anyone who enjoys nature.

My wife and I loved "The Best of Costa Rica: Exploring Natural Wonders" tour very much. I couldn't believe how many different species of animals we saw and how knowledgeable our guide was regarding the various places we explored.
— Review left January 15, 2026
This was a fantastic trip. First, Costa Rica is a wonderful country to explore. For such a small place, there is such a variety of things to see - places, plants, animals and critters. The small group concept worked really well. We varied in age, backgrounds and experience - but everyone there was interesting and interested. Our guide, Erick, has such a wealth of knowledge and shared it well. The itinerary covered everything from the Caribbean to the Pacific, with a wide range of things to do and interesting places to explore. I'd have trouble choosing my favorites - but the monkeys playing outside our cabin and watching the volcano while relaxing in the hot springs would be high on the list. The hanging bridges and white water rafting were a challenge for us Florida flatlanders, but well worth the effort. It truly combined learning with adventure, while being loads of fun. I'd give the tour 10 stars!

Roger was the best guide . He was so knowledgeable , so patient , and always available. I appreciated his sharing of his own life experiences , as well as his friends and community .
The lectures and speakers were qualified ,
motivated , and very interesting . They made it so educational and showed us what Costa Rica has to offer to their community and all visitors.
The wildlife , landscaping etc. was amazing.
Meals were delicious , tasted fresh and having buffets was a great way to try various foods.
Moving locations every 2 days was tiring , but I really wanted to see different areas of Cost Rica and this was probably the best way to do it
I have already recommended this trip to my friends, and other Road Scholar programs , in general. However , several of them , myself included, are concerned about the cost . Knowing that everything is included , makes it so worthwhile.

This was my first trip to Costa Rica and Roger made the entire experience outstanding. We visited locations I probably would have never ventured to but so glad to learn about with his guidance.
During the trip, my partner celebrated his birthday along with another one of our fellow travelers. It happened during our stay in at Arenal. He went out of his way to arrange for a wonderful birthday cake to surprise the two birthdays celebrators! And he succeeded and we had a lovely cake to share among ourselves and some of the staff at the hotel. Roger also arranged at my request, a canopy zipline afternoon; I wanted to experience the Costa Rican rainforest from this angle and it was also my first time trying this exhilarating sport. Wow is all I can say, again he knew the most trusted and professional group to contact and the afternoon was spectacular!
My experience with Road Scholar is this type of travel is not just a vacation, it is a life long learning adventure. Our expert lecturers were so informative and passionate about their specific area of expertise. I always communicate this aspect of your travel options to friends so they understand just how in depth a Road Scholar trip will be when/if they sign up.
I will travel with you again!

This was our first trip to Central America, and I did we love it! We learned so much about the country and saw so many beautiful and interesting sights. Although not specifically a birding trip, our guide Lisseth was so knowledgeable about birds, I saw 75 new birds to add to my list. She was a wonder at spotting sloths in trees that no one else would have noticed. She was a delight personally as well.
I was struck by how much the people loved their country and were so invested in protecting the landscapes, flora, and wildlife.
We loved every minute of this RS adventure!!

This program was very informative and provided the best that can be found in Costa Rica for all lovers of nature and the protection of the environment. It is aggressive in nature but necessary considering the short amount of time one can be there. From the rainforest of Tortuguero to the cloud forest of the central Pacific region this is an eye opening experience.

My wife, Theresa Kardos, and I went on the Best of Costa Rica trip, Program # 11586, August 11 - 22, 2025, led by Lenin Duarte. This was our first Road Scholar journey, indeed our first group trip anywhere. Lenin was wonderful: intelligent, knowledgeable, resourceful, flexible, and good natured. If he is not currently a full-time Road Scholar staff member you should try to enlist him, because he is valuable resource. The trip exceeded our expectations and encouraged us to consider other RS trips in the future.

This is a fantastic trip, one of the best I have taken with RS. It's very busy but each activity is well organized and interesting. There is a great balance between outdoor exploration in the rain forests, the lectures, hands on learning and most appreciated, contact with locals who are passionate about CR. Our guide, Jorge Monge and our driver Popi were fabulous. The trip ran smoothly and all of us were made to feel welcome. I would say it is a trip not to be missed and timing it with the season for green turtle nesting is recommended; seeing her lay eggs will be forever in my memories.

Our Costa Rica trip was also our first Road Scholar trip and an outstanding experience.
Our guide, Jorge, was knowledgeable, patient, and had a good sense of humor. He set the tone of the trip. Every day was an adventure as he helped us discover interesting plants, animals, and hideaways that would have taken us weeks to uncover, if ever.
My wife and I are experienced travelers who usually prefer figuring things out before and as we go. We like vacations where we can experience culture and history. We're glad we decided to try Road Scholar. This excursion was well-rounded with just enough downtime to allow us to catch our breath and recollect the day's events. The trip was well planned and executed. The meals were delicious and diverse. Our group of 12 soon became friends.
The weather even cooperated. Our new Kentucky friends insisted they paid extra for the good weather. :-)
The side excursions and lectures were also well thought out and entertaining. Never a dull moment.
We would travel with Road Scholar again.

Pura Vida! We had a wonderful visit to Costa Rica, constantly awed by the glory of nature and enjoying the company of our fellow Road Scholars. I can't say enough about the beauty of the country, especially my favorite area, Tortuguero. The people of Costa Rica we met along the way were gracious and friendly. Our accommodations were very good and the activities throughout our trip were excellent.
Our guide, David Mora, was a delightful young man with many talents including amazing bird imitations. He did great navigating us through the trip, managing a flat tire and a fellow traveler needing medical assistance. On my previous trip in 2016, our guides Reimer and Jorge were also excellent. So I hope that means RS has a great track record hiring the right people and if you travel with them your guide will be great as well. If you want to do ecotourism right, travel with Road Scholar!

The Best of Costa Rica—And Then Some
This "Best of Costa Rica" program truly lived up to its name—and then exceeded my expectations. The itinerary struck a perfect balance between experiential learning and physical activity. From invigorating hikes and peaceful birdwatching (I finally got to use my binoculars!) to thrilling water experiences like white-water rafting and a crocodile safari, every day offered something new and memorable. We even got to relax with an afternoon at the beach and refreshing dips in the pool.
The local fruits and vegetables were a revelation—who knew papaya could taste that good? The hotels were comfortable and well-located, and the food spreads were consistently fresh, flavorful, and abundant.
One of the highlights of the trip was our exceptional guide, Luis Vargas. If I could rate him above five stars, I would. Luis is deeply knowledgeable about Costa Rica’s culture, biodiversity, and ecosystems. He’s a passionate naturalist who brought the country to life with warmth, humor, and a contagious love for all its living creatures. He treated us not just as tourists, but as friends—checking in often, sharing meals, and preparing us thoughtfully for each day’s adventures. He was kind, attentive, unflappable, and a true professional from start to finish.
I also thoroughly enjoyed my fellow travelers—it was a great group of curious, adventurous people. All in all, this program delivered everything it promised and more. Highly recommended!

This was my 8th and best Road Scholar program. Luis Vargas Ramirez, our group leader, encouraged our group of 18 to become a team, a family, and we truly coalesced that by the end we were hugging and talking about staying in touch. Luis created a Whatsapp group that enabled us to share photos and comments, enabling less adept photographers (like me) to enjoy the moments. Luis had an encyclopedic knowledge of birds and insects and could spot a bird at any distance. He was caring and approachable, patient with our questions and had a quick wit, making us laugh. This program takes you from San Jose to the Caribbean Coast, then west across the country to the Pacific, encountering numerous subclimates all along the way. We walked hanging bridges and forest trails, white water rafted (no one opted out - it was fun) and slow boated, made arepas and tortillas, ate chocolate, drank coffee and tried sugarcane moonshine. We saw numerous birds, lizards, crocodiles, monkeys and sloths surrounded by lush vegetation and flowers. I would highly recommend this trip.

I have taken 5 trips with Road Scholar and I have to say that this one was the very best. One of the reasons is that our group of 18 was the fabulous. That was just one of the reasons that made this trip so great. Fabian Salas, our guide, was a very knowledgeable group leader, helping us and answering all of our questions and at times making us laugh. If you have the opportunity to have him as a guide he will make your trip memorable.
Costa Rica is a beautiful country and at times it took my breath away, from the rain and cloud forests to the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific coast. We walked hanging bridges, white water rafted, ate chocolate, drank coffee and tried sugarcane moonshine. We saw numerous birds, beautiful flowers, snakes, lizards, crocodiles, monkeys, and a mama sloth with her baby. I couldn't have asked for more.
I would highly recommend this trip.

I loved this trip to Costa Rica so very much, and came home with lasting and wonderful memories, and full of new knowledge as well. We had an excellent tour guide in Liza. She cared for us individually. I happened to have my birthday, which she celebrated with the group and even had a birthday cake and candles! Her passion about the environment opened my eyes to things I never considered before, like the interdependencies of nature. I will never forget the leaf ants marching across the path with their green leafy burdens! The flora and the birds were amazing. We got to enjoy many aspects of Costa Rican life: crossing six hanging bridges, a banana plantation, a coffee/cocoa plantation, and a wonderful meal cooked on an open stove by a professor of Afro-Caribbean descent when we learned about his culture. We traveled to a cloud forest, a volcano, a world-class surfing beach, a crocodile safari, and stayed in rainforests and jungles! We rafted, some zipped, we all "gelled" and enjoyed each others new "discoveries" When Road Scholar advertises that they are a teaching program, they are not kidding. I learned so much, loved so much, and will continually recall what I learned as a real teaching experience that has changed me indelibly.

The Natural Wonders of Costa Rica trip was the trip of a lifetime. The quality of the educational material was superb. As noted by his attention to every detail of the experience, the guide clearly wanted the trip the very best it could be for all participants. The program was so well-organized and orchestrated that we had nothing to do but relax and enjoy it.

I enjoyed the trip to Costa Rica very much. The trip was exceptional because of the quality of our guide Alex. I have been on many tours and Alex was amazing, knowledgable, friendly, very very competent, calm, polite, indefatigable, etc. The places we went were mostly interesting, but Alex made them even more interesting. Always helpful, always reminding everyone in a calm unobtrusive way what we needed for the day. The lodges were nice, the bus was very nice, it was a well done trip.

We had a great time in Costa Rica. It was our first Road Scholar tour but we had heard positive things and met RS travelers on the road on our own worldwide explorations. We saw many animals, which was our main goal, and had a magnificent group of travelers, around 16-18 mostly couples, a few singles. The thing about seeing animals though is that weather is a factor--even though we went at the end of January--which is supposedly dry season, it rained continuously on the Caribbean side. Animals shelter from the rain too and were not out on display for our viewing pleasure. The bus was comfortable, the food was just okay but organic and local everywhere. We had a few complaints with some of the accommodations, some of the lengthy lectures, and the limited time we spent in some cool spots (La Fortuna). We also would have preferred a much more active schedule (less bus time, more swimming, kayaking, walking and hiking), but honestly the rain was a big deterrent to the length and strenuousness of outdoor activities. Despite these complaints we would recommend visiting CR to anyone interested in this amazing and diverse country.

Our guide was phenominal in his ability to spot wildlife and his knowledge of the animals, plants and culture of Costa Rica was excellent. This was our first RS trip, and it was really amazing. We were very happy with the reservation process, the air travel planning, and our choice of trip. All of the accommodations were very comfortable, the food healthy and balanced, all staff were terrific. Our guide, Willy Aguilar was outstanding! Willy is an encyclopedic naturalist, very warm and kind, and often went the extra measure to ensure our travels were fun and that everyone in the group was taken care of. The formal lectures were a delight, as were Willy’s informal talks. We will not hesitate to enroll in another RS trip.

This was a fantastic trip for nature enthusiasts. Our guide had encyclopedic knowledge of every plant, animal and fungi we encountered and we encountered many! Days were busy, long and packed with fun, educational experiences. I learned so much about Costa Rica, the rainforest ecosystem and ecotourism. Some of our locations were off the beaten path and I appreciated being away from crowds even though this meant not visiting a couple of the typical CR tourist hot spots.

Costa Rica has long been on our bucket list and this RS trip did not disappoint. Our guide, Willy Aguilar, gets 10++ stars - one of the best guides we have had. He worked hard to make sure all the attendees expectations were met. He is a walking encyclopedia of flora and fauna. Although this is listed as an active trip and there was lots of walking/hiking, some easy river rafting, there were turnout points where attendees could take shorter hikes and meet up later with the group, or just stay at the lodge if they weren't up for an outing. We had wonderful home visits where we learned to make cheese, arepas, tortills, and press sugar cane for juice. I HIGHLY recommend this trip for those who would like to explore Costa Rica.
We arrived in San Jose a few days early and were able to explore the downtown on our own - we visited the Mercado Central, Jade Museum, National Theatre, and do an historic walking tour with a Univ CR history professor. Since this trip doesn't spend time in San Jose, it was well worth the extra days to explore the capital. Ubers were quite reasonable and reliable.

The activities are well balanced and combined with learning opportunities. Experiencing nature first hand through jungle hiking, canal boat tours, white water rafting, bird & wildlife viewing, plant identification, coffee and cacao processing demos and cultural immersion afford top notch opportunities to get to know this complex and diverse country. Very impressive leadership and educators, provided many opportunities to satisfy and stimulate curiosity, understanding and appreciation of the diversity & interdependency of cultural and natural life forces.

Great overview of the ecosystems and natural wonders, as well as some insights into Costa Rica’s culture. The “keep the pace” designation seems to be based more on early calls, long transfers and full days rather than physical activity. Most walks were at a slow pace because we were looking for birds and monkeys and other wildlife. Well-planned program that involved all our senses!

Pedro was a fabulous guide. His knowledge base of not only the wildlife, but also of Costa Rica’s history, culture and current events was impressive. He was definitely the highlight of our experience.
This was our first Road Scholar trip.
The itinerary was a wide ranging one, which had appealed to us greatly.
The lodging provided was comfortable and the food adequate, but not really fully typical of Costa Rican cuisine. It was obviously adapted to better appeal to North American and European tourist palates.
We were disappointed in the low level of activity. We had anticipated a far less sedentary experience. Long bus rides and passive presentations were the daily norm. And sadly, several of our walks were cut very short due to the unfitness* of a few of our group members. We had some participants who could not go 15-20 minutes without sitting down to rest. The slowness of our progress frequently meant it was time turn around to get back to the bus before we had completed the entire planned walk.
* they were not disabled, merely very out of shape.

The Best of Costa Rica Natural Wonders trip was amazing.
Our guide, Stiven, was incredibly knowledgeable about the flora and fauna as well as the history of Costa Rica. He expertly spotted and identified birds and wildlife from the floor to the canopy. We did not go for long before spotting something new. He used a spotting scope to give us an up-close look at a variety of fauna including birds, snakes, and bats. So cool.
Our driver, Alonzo, was skilled and patient and delivered us timely and safely everywhere.
Our days were busy and filled with exciting new information and things to see. We learned so much about the different ecosystems of Costa Rica. Their biological diversity is something to behold. We also learned so much about cacao and chocolate making, coffee growing, making and tasting, sea turtle and cloud forest conservation, volcano eruptions and post-eruption ecosystems, the myriad uses of a coconut (besides Pina Coladas). We visited local families and ate local foods.
As if all of this were not enough, we experienced a minute of silence in the rainforest where the only thing that could be heard was nature in its true form – magical.
All of the locals and experts engaged by Road Scholar were exceptional in their knowledge and presentation of their topics.
All of the transportation personnel engaged by Road Scholar were skilled and professional.
Stiven and Alonzo were skilled, professional, warm and kind and did everything they could to accommodate our needs and make our experience was as memorable as possible. Mission Accomplished!

This was our first Road Scholar experience. I think our family of 4 may not be the typical clientele for this trip...but it was an unforgettably wonderful vacation. Erick is a ninja-level tour guide; not only was he an expert at everything we saw, but he could tailor each location and experience for the unique goals of each participant. In terms of an educational tour, our favorite was the bat exhibition...wow! None of us will ever feel the same way about bats again. We also really enjoyed the chocolate tour, as we got a tactile sense of what it takes to make chocolate as we know it. We also had a wonderful, friendly group. Highly recommended!

I would not do this trip again. For me personally it was awful. I got sick early on after being blasted with mold from the AC in my room and other AC at the Radisson. I ended up missing a lot of the tours and activities and ate almost every meal by myself. It rained monsoon style every day. We spent days tramping through mud. I slipped and fell in the mud one night and was covered. I really wanted to see exotic birds but the only birds I saw were the same ones that we have in Florida. Some of the eco resorts were beautiful but our rooms were always very far away from everything and the meeting spot. Most of the time I got lost coming and going. The last resort that we were at was gorgeous.I would have loved to spend a day at the beach but there was not enough time. And now, finally, the ultimate insult is dealing with RS insurance who so far has refused to reimburse for the very expensive physician visit and prescribed drugs. I would have had a better time staying home.

This trip has clearly been refined and tweaked many times because the result is a near-perfect experience. It is literally coast-to-coast, and everything in between. You start in the big city and then end up in all kinds of fantastic places -- rain forest, cloud forest, turtle-nesting beach on the Caribbean Sea, surfing beach on the Pacific side, hike up a volcano, raft a river, take a river cruise with huge crocodiles lounging on the shore,, etc. etc. You'll see toucans and hummingbirds, sloths and monkeys, learn how quality coffee and chocolate are made, etc, etc. Each lodge was unique. We had howler monkeys serve as alarm clocks at one, and fall to sleep with the sound of crashing waves of the ocean at another. Our guide, Ivan, was simply amazing. Can't say enough for his enthusiasm and knowledge. Between Ivan and the experts who gave us lectures, I learned more about Costa Rica than I ever expected, and came away extremely impressed with this wonderful country and how it has embraced its environment and made it an economic engine.

The Best of Costa Rica was a fabulous trip. While driving to our ferry trip to the Pachira Lodge in Tortuguero we had to wait for a banana crossing! I had no idea the process of getting bananas from farm to grocery. Then on the ferry ride we saw crocodiles. The Lodge was like glamping and in the morning we woke to the sound of birds and howling monkeys. We got to see huge sea turtles leaving, coming ashore and laying eggs. We encountered spider monkeys at the lodge and howler monkeys later in the evening. The next day we saw sloth, white faced monkeys, toucan, and other birds and the "Jesus" lizard showed us how he could walk on water. In Chilamate we experienced rainforest rain and were able to find beautiful frogs in the lush foliage around the dining hall. Our room was on the Sarapiqui River with a big porch where we sat and watched hummingbirds! We learned about coffee, cocoa and enjoyed chocolate, and ended the day white water rafting. We got to enjoy pepper production, make bread and pineapple marmalade. We continued on to La Fortuna and our room at the Paraiso Resort overlooking the Arenal Volcano! The hikes over hanging bridges and the forest nature were breathtaking. We had a long day of travel through the beautiful Costa Rican country to the cloud forest. In Jaco I was excited to see the Pacific Ocean, a black sand beach and in the morning, whales. Our guide Alvaro Alvarado was extremely knowledgeable about nature and Costa Rica in general. I believe he made our trip even more excellent. I am so excited we were able to experience this wonderful trip and look forward to our next Road Scholar adventure!

Costa Rica is truly a gem. It may be one of the last ecological paradises as revealed in its diversity and the country’s concept of ‘rewilding’ many areas. We were introduced to several Costa Rican families who welcomed us, shared recipes and their insights, and expressed their love of the land. We experienced many ‘wow’ factors, and I will name only three: a sea turtle laying eggs, the mirid of birds at a feeding station, and seeing at least 3 pairs of Macaws flying.

Most reviews praise their guides. I will do so too, our guide WIlliam Suarez was very nice and knowledgeable (especially of birds). But I'd like to give some information to others considering this trip that I think would be helpful. First, if you're more comfortable in a city than in Nature, this trip is probably not for you. The highlight for me was the rainforest. Every piece of earth has a plant or tree growing on it and clearly they are competing with each other for space and light. It is impressive. You will see different types of rainforest, and lots of wildlife (sloths, monkeys, birds (lots), iguanas, amphibians and snakes). There's also insects, and you will need lots of bug spray and it will be hot and humid (at times). They will ask you to wake up early several days. It may rain a lot sometimes. The accomodations and food are perfectly OK, some have nice surprises (natural hot tubs, or in the Pacific coast 'hidden' beaches). The food is fine, the highliight was fresh fruit every breakfast (papaya, mango, pineapple, watermelon, etc). It's easy to get used to this. It's impressive that a Latin American country has found a formula to offer first class ecotourism while protecting the environment. No need to exchange currency for local colones, the US dollar is widely accepted. However, it's a great idea to take lots of small bills ($5, $10, $20s). Finally, there were some touches that again highlight why Costa Rica is such a nice place. I'm thinking of statues to Anne Frank and another one to John Lennon in San Jose. I've been to other central american countries, and this trip makes you realize what a difference a 'good' government can make. That's the other take-home lesson from this trip.

This is an excellent program. We saw an amazing number and variety of birds (I believe we saw over 100 different birds), animals, and trees/plants. Our group leader was extremely knowledgeable and was able to identify by both sight and sound every bird and animal we came across. We also learned a lot about Costa Rican culture, agriculture, and small businesses--the program includes visits to a family-owned coffee plantation, several family-owned farms, and family-owned restaurants and hotels.
For me, the highlights of the trip were (1) seeing a turtle lay her eggs on a beach in Tortuguero National Park, (2) white water rafting in Sarapiqui (small rafts holding up to 6 people plus a guide, # 1 and 2 rapids), (3) an inspiring visit to Edwin's environmental project and B & B called Canto del Rio, and (4) hiking near the Arenal volcano and crossing and re-crossing my first hanging bridge (reportedly 150 feet above a river gorge).
Be prepared for some very long days. We changed hotels every two days (necessary to see what we saw) and luggage often had to be placed outside our door at 6:00am, then traveling and seeing sights all day, hotel check-in, followed by a lecture at 6:00pm, then dinner.
Pura Vida!

We had a wonderful trip across the country from coast to coast. Tortuguero was a delight to visit, hot and humid but tremendous fun meandering through the narrow waterways surrounded by thick undergrowth (think Jurassic Park). Incredibly colorful birdlife on view for the entire trip with lots of Sloths, monkeys, snakes, frogs and other creepy crawlies to photograph, delight and entertain. Accommodation and food were first rate the entire trip. Our small group of 12 were from across the US and bonded marvelously. If you're curious about what Costa Rica's incredibly diverse environment has to offer from the Caribbean to the Pacific this tour is for you. If you're really lucky you might get Jose Amador as your guide for the trip. He was exceptional in every way. Pura Vida.

It was great to learn about the flora and fauna of Costa Rica from the presenters and get to see the beautiful scarlet macaws, hummingbirds, walking palm trees and dozens of other creatures of nature. This country is amazing. The highlights of our trip were the white water rafting, the sea turtles laying their eggs on the beach at night, the crocodile safari and all the wonderful birds, monkees, plants and people. The hotels were adequate and nice for the most part, but the hotel Ara Ambigua was horrible. The hotel web site says every room has hair dryers, balconies and coffee and our room had none of that. My husband hit his foot on the bed post multiple times due to only a foot of clearance at the end of the bed to the wall. He now thinks he broke his toe. It had all kinds of safety issues and the response by the guide and Road Scholar was poor. The food was adequate- fortunately we love beans and rice, as that was served every meal. I expected more good fish, but the only fish that was served was tilapia and not often at that.
The lectures were wonderful- done by locals and well presented.
The activity level was accurate- we walked a lot and it was uphills and over treacherous terrain quite a bit.
Overall, we are glad to have spent time in such a lovely and now, more progressive country.

It's no wonder Costa Rica is the campus of the year for 2024! Balancing a beautiful natural environment with the needs of millions of citizens can seem daunting, but Costa Rica's historical and current commitment to doing exactly that makes it a unique treasure. The Road Scholar program opened my eyes and my heart to the possibilities to counterbalance the negative and seemingly overwhelming problems we meet with every day. This trip qualifies as a bucket list, not only because of the goals we were able to attain, but also for the new goals and passions it has made available to us! Pura Vida!

This was our first RS trip and it was everything we hoped for and more. The educational aspect was exactly what I wanted, meeting locals and learning about the ecosystems. Jorge is a wonderful guide, so organised and his knowledge of the flora and fauna is epic. I enjoyed the small tour with only 18 of us, we could really get to know and support one another. Pura Vida!

I initially chose this 12-day Costa Rica Natural Wonders trip as I wanted to experience as much of the country as possible, primarily the Caribbean and Pacific coasts. I experienced this and much more. The Guide and Driver went above & beyond what was expected and were both a joy to travel with every day. The locals were always very friendly and inviting. An overall great and very educational program, as well as an abundance of nature, animals, saw rain forests and cloud forests. Great memories!

Very impressed with the caliber of the lecturers and guides, structure of the itinerary and events, logistics of the transportation, meals and hotels. The cherry on top for me was the supper on the beach with torches, bonfire and lights. It added that magical, nostalgic qualities. Would recommend Road Scholar without hesitation. Good work, everyone!

This was a chance of a lifetime! Road Scholar got it right. They had everything planned perfectly from the flight to the accommodations to the field trips to the meals to the highly educated tour guide to the ventures into different individual’s homes in the small villages. I would turn around and do it all over again. We just happen to have The ideal group of 18 participants who all meshed beautifully. Our guide had the greatest sense of humor, which added a great flare to the trip. I’m looking forward to sharing all the lovely pictures and memories for many years to come.

The ability to see so many different ecosystems in one trip, learn about this amazing country, and its coffee, turtles, birds, coconuts, bananas, flora and fauna, and crocodiles was amazing. The pineapple is delicious!! We were busy, hiked a lot, but still had free time. I would highly recommend this coast to coast tour!

I highly recommend the Exloring Natural Wonders of Costa Rica tour because it includes a variety of forest ecosystems, marvelous accomodations, and very knowledgeable local guide to help visitors see a plethora of birds, mammals, and other wildlife. The ecolodges set right in the rainforest are special places and if you are a single person traveler, as I was, you are not charged extra and can fit quite easily into the group.

Wonderful variety of experiences. Fabulous wildlife and lots of opportunities to interact with local Costa Ricans. Our leader Ivan was a "walking book" of knowledge of history, birds, wildlife, conservation efforts. William our bus driver was a great team member. Each place we visited was different and offered different experiences.
A great way to truly get to know Costa Rica. Be prepared for heat and humidity. That said, Highly recommend.

The Best of Costa Rica: Exploring Natural Wonders is an excellent program! The micro group of 12 was the perfect size and we all got along so well! Reimer is a wonderful leader, you can tell he cares about Costa Rica and everyone in his group. You may want to download the Merlin app by Cornell to help identify birds - you'll see A LOT of birds (thanks Reimer for that tip!). We saw 19 different species just on the Jungle Crocodile Safari boat ride.

I highly recommend this trip, which is packed with fascinating and educational experiences and so much natural beauty throughout Costa Rica. Most intineraries for this tour go to Tortuguero, a wonderful area I have visited in the past. Our group went instead to Cano Negro, a wetlands area inland in the north of the country. This experience was amazing. We took boat trips on the river and walked to lagoons where we saw a huge diversity of migrating water birds, including Jabiru, pink spoonbills, and various herons and storks. We saw Camens, lizards, iguanas, sloths, 3 kinds of monkeys, and many beautiful land birds as well. A lecture, visit to the town, local dancing and an art project added to the experience. Cano Negro was a highlight of my trip, so I highly recommend this itinerary.

The trip itself exceeded our expectations, the diversity of nature, boat trips, local guides, all were wonderful. Our Road Scholar guide, Sergio, and dedicated driver, Esteban were excellent, we could not say enough about how they enhanced our experience.
The itinerary was just right, different areas and different experiences, a comprehensive overview of Costa Rica. The local instructors were all passionate and informative about their field of expertise. The visits to local homes, farms and businesses were very interesting, adding so much to our enjoyment and understanding of the people of Costa Rica.
We would certainly recommend this trip with Road Scholar and make sure you’re ready to take lots of pictures, either with phone or SLR.

This trip was full of wonders! I had wanted to visit Costa Rica for a few years, and I thought that I would get a tour book and plan our trip. I am so glad that I choose instead to go with Road Scholar. Everyday there was something new to marvel at or learn from. On my own, I would not have been able to arrange the instructors and guides that made this trip such a learning experience. My main goal was to learn about the flora and fauna of Costa Rica, but my best memories from the trips were of the people we met along the way. The instructors we had are the people on the front line of the conservation effort in Costa Rica. Edwin, the conservationist and owner of Canto del Rio in the Cloud Forest, had such an inspiring story. Another plus of being on an organized tour was having transportation to these places. For example, to get to Tortuguero without a guide would involved careful planning. Driving in Costa Rica as a tourist, would have been challenging. This trip was everything I had hoped it would be. !Pura Vida!

We took this program in conjunction with the 3 Jewels program. We highly recommend this combination, as different areas and aspects of Costa Rica are covered. Now to this program: Our experience could not have been better. Our leader, Willy was highly organized and knowledgeable in every important way. And the lectures we experienced, and the visits to the Gold Museum, the cocoa and coffee farms, Hazel's sharing from her back yard, the tortilla making in the garden setting all made this trip one we will never forget. There is so much to admire about the people of Costa Rica, with their spirit of cooperation in creating a place where the environment, the health, and the education of their fellow citizens is the highest priority. We're forever grateful for all the people of Costa Rica who shared with us, for our leader and driver, and for all our fellow travelers who also contributed greatly.

Great group size, sorry to have lost a couple at the beginning due to health issue.
Talks given by local families and family businesses were especially memorable and insightful.
Eco-diversity and the unending discovery of plant and animal species to see and learn about one of the mane themes of the trip along with tourism business for sustainability.
Great coffee and chocolate.
Hotel accommodations in the wilds was a big plus.

He took us out at night to see poison dart frogs! He made sure everybody arrived when and where they needed to be.
We saw many different ecosystems. I was amazed by the flora and wildlife surrounding us no matter where we travelled. Some of our presenters were pretty corny -- it's a major tourist destination after all -- but I just had to laugh and appreciate.

Everyone down to the bus drivers, boat captains, lodge staff, and shop keepers knew so much about the natural wonders we were there to see. We left inspired by the understanding that our ecotourism dollars were essential to the sustained efforts so many Costa Ricans were making to conserve wildlife and regrow tropical rain and cloud forests. We also left with deep appreciation for our fellow travelers, who shared our enthusiasm for these natural wonders. She was very interested in teaching us the history and cultural traditions of her homeland. “Liz” wanted us to understand how much her fellow citizens were working to make her country prosper and to teach the world
to be better stewards of our planet and it’s resources.
And perhaps best of all, Liz was always available to answer any questions or concerns we might have. She did everything in her power to help us have the best possible travel experience we could.
She is truly a beautiful person, inside and out.

Luis Vargas is a superb guide. He is sensitive, respectful, helpful and extremely knowledgeable. I thoroughly appreciated his extensive knowledge and identification of birds, mammals, insects, trees, flowers, etc.
I enjoyed all the guest lectures especially Sylvia on the 1 st or 2nd day - it set the stage. Willy on the Force of Nature was excellent. I liked the home visits with Hazel and making tortillas except making coconut candy. Could have done without that one.
Edwin in the Cloud Forest was most impressive! Loved that stop!
I enjoyed all the hotels especially Pachira and Selve Verde (? Spelling). I did not like the long wait at the Volcano (fancy) hotel’s ala carte restaurant. Buffet style is MUCH more efficient and therefore enjoyable. The last hotel before San Jose convention hotel was very confusing and we had a difficult arrival with much confusion
The free time was enjoyable the next to last afternoon. A bit more free time would have been great.
Cannot say enough praise for Luis Vargas. So much appreciated his guiding our tour. He is fabulous!

We enjoyed this trip. Our guide Luis is knowledgeable, warm, and humorous.
Accommodations were lovely, although the Pachira lodge was too warm for comfort because of no air conditioning. Food was plentiful, of good variety, tasty, and interesting, although we ate too much as usual. The lectures were very informative and of good topics. We very much enjoyed information and visits to local businesses and people. The route was a great way to understand the climate and topography of Costa Rica. There were great occasions to view wildlife, especially birds, but if there was a way to see other wild animals, such as Tapir, that would have been welcome. We appreciated the many opportunities for nature walks with Luis. The stand-out occasion on the trip was seeing the Jesus Christ lizard walk-on-water.
We appreciate how Costa Rica is a 'Green' country, but we encourage further steps that could be taken for our trip:
1. eliminate the use of individual soap/shampoo wrappers by having dispensers.
2. reduce the use of plastic trash liners and other bags.
3. increase recycling
4. converting to electric from fossil fuels
5. protect turtle nesting from local dogs that dig up eggs in Tortuguerro.
Overall, we encourage Road Scholar to offer 'green' travel adventures. The less impact on the environment we have traveling, the more we are inclined to travel.

The Costa Ricans have adopted a national policy of preserving their natural heritage and take it very seriously. We met several 'Tican' educators and conservationists who are actively involved in this effort. We toured through many ecological zones of the country and, as someone from a temperate climate, I was astonished at the variety of species we saw - especially plants, amphibians, and birds. Our very knowledgable group leader, Jimmy Trejos, provided a watchful eye and backup when required. Be aware that the combination of heat, humidity and fairly strenuous activity can be challenging. An eye-opening and thoroughly enjoyable tour.

I recently returned from 'The Best of Costa Rica' tour and had a wonderful time! There were 14 of us on the tour and we all felt our Group Leader, Andres Quiros, was excellent. His knowledge, organizational skills and affability all helped to enhance our experiences throughout the tour. We saw so many amazing sights and animals, and ended up being quite fortunate with the weather - we only got drenched once, and it's the rainy season! I heartily recommend this tour for anyone interested in wildlife, eco-diversity, and life in Costa Rica.

Fantastic trip. Our guide, Jose, was extremely knowledgeable and excellent at spotting and identifying wildlife. We experienced cloud forests, rain forests, a volcano, and more. If you care about the environment, this is the company for you. Preservation of the plants and animals was a theme. Your tourist dollars will help save the planet!

All of the activities and accommodations were excellent. Lenin Duarte was a superb leader -- he could spot and identify myriad plants and animals and then helped the group see and appreciate them. He also shared information about the history and culture of Costa Rica. Each special presenter had interesting, informative programs. The lodges were all different and enjoyable in their uniqueness. A+!

We loved it! The demonstrations, some hands on, were excellent. We enjoyed seeing several sloths (one in a tree by the road only 5 feet up) and other animals and many birds. Our guide pointed out many animals and birds that we would not have noticed without his keen eye and telescope. We also loved the river rafting and kayaking to a private beach.

This was an outstanding tour that gave us an overview of the ecosystems of Costa Rica. Everything was very well organized. The tour leader, Roger, was very knowledgable about all of the animals and birds that we encountered. The driver, Sammy, was very skilled. The guest lecturers were all of high quality and gave very interesting talks.
Some tips:
Airport transfers: Holbrook will arrange a pickup from the airport to the Radisson Hotel even if you haven't arranged your flights with them. It's very convenient. For the return to the airport, the Wyndham Hotel is about a 15 min drive from the airport and the hotel has its own taxi service.
Decaf coffee: There was no decaf coffee available outside of San Jose, so if that's what you drink you should bring some instant. They provide hot water for tea.
Laundry/clothes. Everyone dressed casually. Synthetic clothes were easier to wash and get dry (we spent only 2 nights at each hotel). Selva Verde Lodge was a good place to do laundry half way through the trip, the hotel will wash clothes for you at a very reasonable price. If you get the laundry to them by 8 pm you can pick it up after 4 pm the next day. If you wash clothes in the sink, bring your own sink plug, none of the hotels had plugs in the sinks.
Rain gear: Rain jackets were more useful than ponchos.
San Jose: The Jade museum is well worth a visit. The Radisson has its own taxi service and you can call them to pick you up from the museum.

This program was well-planned, exposed me to Costa Rica's amazing eco-diversity, and provided lodging at Costa Rica-owned hotels and educational experiences that were in-depth yet supported local economies. A must-do trip for families, individuals, and groups (and great for photographers)!

We saw an amazing amount of wildlife. Seeing macaws, toucans, & monkeys in trees right outside our cabin was especially fun. Being very close to sloths in trees was special. The only difficult parts of the trip for us were the walk at hanging bridges and the humidity at Carara National Park. We are 85 and 76 and were able to accomplish everything, except the white water rafting which we chose not to do.

This was the best trip ever! Andrew, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable and very patient. He and our bus driver smoothly took care of the logistics moving from place to place. As a relatively new solo traveler, I was a little apprehensive on how I would fit in with the group. Our group was great and we are staying in touch after the trip. I think I enjoyed viewing the wildlife and fauna in the various ecosystems best. I could do it all over again. In fact, I had so much fun, that I have schedule another trip (to the Azures) in August.

Pura Vida! What an enriching trip this was... We encountered so many new creatures and plants, with our guide Pedro who amazingly seemed to know them all. But perhaps the best part about this trip was the people we encountered. Many Costa Ricans are working hard in small ways to conserve or restore the diverse habitats that support all those critters: some in National Parks, others in private conservancies. Their dedication and optimism are encouraging and inspiring.

This 5-star program provides a wonderful experience for all your senses. Our group leader Fabian Salas was nothing short of amazing in every respect. You will likely see a variety of birds, some sloths, lots of iguanas, crocodiles, lizards, and more plants and trees than you can remember. The whitewater rafting and warm ocean outrigger canoeing were a delight. The boat rides on the canals, the suspended bridges through the forests and the early morning birdwatching walks were all memorable, as were the "free massage" bus rides on some bumpy roads. Don't expect to see waterfalls on this itinerary. But do expect to have a good time while learning about coffee, local foods, how people really live, and why Costa Rica is such a remarkable destination.

What an amazing adventure!! I was very pleased with our experience in Costa Rica. The Itinerary was all that I had imagined and more, however, I realize now how truly busy the days were and I might have benefited from a little extra time. We crossed the country twice going Coast to coast.
I can't say enough good things about Edgar, our leader. I would describe him as eager to help, enthusiastic about showing us everything this trip had to offer, and funny. He was well prepared and always positive. He is so knowledgeable about the plants and animals - of Costa Rica, especially the birds! He always engaged the group to keep them focused on the learning for each adventure. His tolerance for our differences and many needs was much appreciated by this traveler.
The accommodations were wonderful. I liked that each place had a slightly different 'flavor' for us to experience. I would have loved an extra day in Tortuguero to just recoup from the first long haul.....and I loved the wildlife in the canals and the Pachira Lodge.
The food was always well prepared and attractive, though I couldn't always enjoy all there was to try. Choices were always there...Fresh and Delicious local cuisine!
It was a most memorable trip, and while I savor this memory, ..I can't wait for my next adventure!

This was my first time traveling with a group and I was a bit apprehensive. We found that us participants had a desire to learn more about Costa Rica biology and natural resources and we got along very well. Our guide William was exceptional! He shared his knowledge of wildlife and forests as well as Costa Rica (CR) government, social, and economic issues. The program provided us with a "taste" of several CR eco-systems too. It was well planned out from transportation and lodging logistics to the actual programs and hands-on learning opportunities.

It was a fabulous, wonderful trip. Mentally challenging, culturally challenging, plus a little bit physically challenging. “Keep the pace” is an accurate description of the activity level. The main theme was showcasing Costa Rica's wild richness of natural diversity, and their efforts at sustainability, and protection of the flora and fauna and cultural heritage. It's a small, developing country, and so requires Americans to ratchet-back their expectations in some ways, while astounding us with its exotic beauty. I learned many new things and came away with new understanding of that part of the world, enjoyed new foods, participated in activities I would never have done on my own: watching a green sea turtle nest and lay eggs on the beach (a highly regulated activity), walking on hanging bridges above the jungle canopy, white-water rafting (low-level), boating on the jungle rivers observing monkeys, lizards, coati, birds, bugs, and crocs in the wild; I communed with the tropical flora and fauna, met local people, and stepped seriously outside my comfort zone. The heat and humidity of the rain forest are forces to be reckoned with, and it Rains Every Day - at least part of every day - so some prep is necessary. Ultimately, I felt renewed and refreshed in mind and body for having participated in this adventure. Our tour guide, Andrés Quirós, was expert on so many subjects, was loads of fun, and a superb leader. I loved it all – well, except the return home with that hour waiting in line at customs in Miami, and then running half a mile to catch the connecting flight. All part of international travel, and I lived to tell about it, and it was part of the adventure!

Wonderful trip with lots of hiking, outdoor exploring, and nature watching. I particularly enjoyed the boat tours through natural canals, mangrove waterways, lagoons and other aquatic habitats. Our guides were able to spot birds, snakes, sloths, monkeys, iguanas, and other wildlife that we would have missed had we been on our own. Our primary guide, Luis Vargas Ramirez, was the best: knowledgeable, fun, and well-organized. He took very good care of us including carrying his telescope everywhere to ensure that we had close-up views of shy animals and unfamiliar vegetation. It is not a relaxing trip, but an unforgettable nature experience in a country with diverse bio-systems and a commitment to ecotourism.

My Costa Rican adventure was so much more than I could have imagined! I saw and experienced everything on the typical list, such as sloths, monkeys, and toucans, but every day was a new opportunity to learn and grow. My guide, Jorge Monge, was so proud of his country and it showed through every day in his delight to share his immense knowledge with all of us. There were 7 women in our group of 18 traveling alone, so I never felt that I was a fifth wheel, but everyone had meaningful interactions with each other and gained so much from that. I couldn't be happier with my experience.

The Best of Costa Rica: Exploring Natural Wonders took us several sites in the country where we visited National Parks that are diverse in their landscape, flora and fauna. I feel like I got a very good look at the different areas from Rain forest, Cloud forest, canals and oceans. Our guide was exceptional.

My wife and I had a wonderful experience on this exploration of Costa Rica. It was our first visit there and we would love to return. There was a great deal of variety in the program from San Jose to coast to mountains to coast. My favorite activity was the birding where we saw more color and variety than any place else we have been. The Costa Rican people we met during the program were very informative and did an excellent job of conveying their knowledge of and love for their country. I cannot say enough good things about our guide, Erick Guzman. He got to know each of us and let us know him. He successfully encouraged a positive chemistry among all members of our group which made the trip truly enjoyable. Erick's knowledge of and his ability to spot wildlife was extraordinary.

This was the 9th RS trip I have taken in 4 years. They have all been great but Exploring Natural Wonders of Costa Rica is more than great; it is magical. Imagine waking up to the sounds of exotic birds singing and monkeys setting up their territories for the day, to flowering bushes 20 feet high and a dormant volcano in the distance. Our guide Edwin Ramirez is one of the most knowledgeable and personable people I have ever met. Our group was friendly and inclusive; we went from being strangers from far different parts of the USA to being addressed as'familia'by Edwin each morning. Going on a night beach walk and watching a turtle lay her eggs, walking through magnificent rain forests and learning how not only animals but plants and trees exhibit strategies for dominance and survival, paddling an outrigger canoe to a beautiful beach for a relaxing few hours, waking early in the morning to watch gorgeous birds, finding a sloth in a high tree, spying macaws flying with their life partners in protected areas. It was a marvelous adventure!Pura vida is the national slogan and it means life is something precious that should be treasured and enjoyed. Pura Vida is the motto of the warm friendly people that live there and it became our way of greeting each other. As for safety during COVID, we all felt total safety. This country needs and treasures tourism. You will feel totally safe.I have been in touch with women I met on our RS trip. They are all in Costa Rica withdrawal, as I am. It's hard to leave there and return to normality. Go to Costa Rica. Your life will be richer for the experience.

This program to Costa Rica is a must do for any nature lover! There is so much wildlife from monkeys and sloths to birds and sea turtles. We were fortunate to have Edwin as our guide who made sure everything was well coordinated. He is also an esteemed naturalist with an unbelievable amount of knowledge. We were a little worried before leaving home about the COVID situation but everything ran so smoothly! Kudos to Road Scholar for another fantastic educational experience!

This was my 2nd Road Scholar program and I thought it was excellent. It was well balanced in terms of content ranging from seeing and learning about Costa Ricas wildlife and ecology to meeting some of its people and getting a sense of their culture and heritage. (NOTE: This IS a "NATURAL Wonders" program so you will get much more of the wildlife/ecology than the culture/heritage.) I particularly enjoyed the opportunities to take photographs. (Bring a good camera with telephoto if you have one.) Two of the lectures on biodiversity and the ecological impacts of volcanoes and earthquakes were particularly good. The pace of the program (for me) was also good, keeping us going from early morning to early evening; but not over-doing it. Our group leader was outstanding and I think made an overall good program into an excellent one. Hopefully all the groups leaders are as talented.

Our trip to Costa Rica to explore the natural wonders was very informative and a joy to participate in. The cleanliness of the accommodations and the Beautiful bus we're great. The food represented the best of Costa Rica. And our guide who was incredibly informed of all things flora and fauna. I would highly recommend this trip if you want to learn more about Costa Rica.

We have been on 4 road scholar trips and have enjoyed each one. However, on this trip to Costa Rica we had the ultimate guide, Roger. He was knowledgeable about all of the natural wonders and, as a Tico himself, knew quite a bit about the country in general. In addition to his knowledge of Costa Rica he was particularly adept at meeting our various needs be they dietary or whatever. He was always there for us.
The speakers at our educational programs and on our field trips expanded our understanding immeasurably. Also wonderful was our driver. He took us safely down narrow, bumpy roads by bus on roads that I would not have driven myself.

The title says it all: the trip covered Costa Rica coast-to-coast with plenty of opportunities to see the outdoors and wildlife of the different regions. Excellent field trips, plantation tours, and activities such as boat tours, river rafting, and outrigger canoes in the ocean. We went during the dry season and only had one wet hike. Excellent guide; knowledgeable, very organized, and a good sense of humor. Highly recommend this as a first-time trip to this country.

The Best of Costa Rica: Exploring Natural Wonders is a program for active individuals who are lifelong learners. The field trips and experiences provided during the class far exceeded my expectations, and there was a little time each day for unstructured activities and relaxation. An unexpected plus was the knowledge and positive attitudes brought to the course by other participants. The instructor and supplemental lecturers were not only knowledgeable and organized, but they shared their love for the country and its vision for the future. Our experienced instructor took good care of us and brought an unexpected depth of knowledge, plus music, humor and deep affection for his country. What a wonderful interpreter and ambassador for Costa Rica! He has a real gift for helping students relate to the place and the information. I give him a great deal of credit for our delightful experience on this Road Scholar trip, an introduction to the spectacular natural and cultural areas of Costa Rica. I would certainly recommend this program to others who are physically active and share my interests in the plants, animals, economy, culture and natural treasures of this wonderful country.

Through hiking, rafting, traveling from one side of the country to the other, you get to explore and see and understand the different regions of this small but amazing country. Watching for macaws, toucans, howler monkeys, iguanas, and even snakes is fun and exciting - especially when they are spotted. This was one of the best Road Scholar trips I have taken.

Just returned from The Best of Costa Rica: Exploring Natural Wonders. The trip was amazing. We had an excellent guide and our group was fun with everyone getting along nicely together. It was hard to leave it when the last day came. We were fortunate that the weather was dry and rain was not a concern for our activities. It was our first time in the country but it will not be our last.

This trip was truly excellent for those who like the structure involved in a group trip (or who know ahead of time to view the Road Scholar trip as a wonderful introduction to Costa Rica, and can also come back later and explore more freely on their own). Luis is an incredible guide in every possible way, as well as an engaging, warm person, and we were especially lucky to get him. His immense knowledge of wildlife and birds created many very special experiences we might have otherwise missed.
For people who are naturally very independent/adventurous and also want to spend time meeting and mingling a lot with everyday Costa Ricans, I would tell them to perhaps wait to do Road Scholar until they are older and will by necessity prioritize security and having all details managed for you over having more freedom and flexibility.
I ended up deciding to independently return to Costa Rica again at a later time to more freely explore and wander, and I view the experience of this trip as a really great introduction to Costa Rica.

This was a great trip! Pedro is so knowledgeable and delightful. We had intense rain, but his ability to encourage all of us never faltered. The accommodations were excellent with the exception of the lodging in Sarapaqui which was inconsistent. The food was wonderful everywhere - healthy, tasty and abundant. The lectures were all interesting, particularly the first lecture in San Jose - what a terrific speaker!
My only criticism was the itinerary for the 2 days in Punta Leona - it seemed we were on the bus back & forth multiple times, the activities of which could have been scheduled quite differently to minimize bus time and maximize our time at Punta Leona.

Costa Rica is trying hard to be more environmentally correct, and it is succeeding in many areas. Using a variety of events, hikes, lectures, and experiences, Road Scholar has opened up this country for discovery. Road Scholar made this easy and enjoyable.

It is hard to find enough superlatives to describe my first experience with Road Scholar during "The Best of Costa Rica: Exploring Natural Wonders. I learned a great deal about the importance of eco-tourism in Costa Rica, thoroughly enjoyed the itinerary and my fellow travelers. But above all, our guide Edwin Ramirez was exceptional. His knowledge of each area, the flora and fauna, and expertise in group organization and management were A+. I am a solo traveller and felt very comfortable in all the program settings.

this tour of Costa Rica combines a good mix of lecture learning about geography and biodiversity, walking and boat exploration of the area, touring coffee and chocolate facilities and adventure of hiking over hanging bridges, river rafting and sea outrigger canoeing. The group size was great so we could meet everyone. The Road Scholar guide was very knowledgeable of Costa Rica history, flora and fauna and geology. He was both very personable and professional. It was our favorite of the three Road Scholar trips we have so far taken.

Lenin, Duarte (spelling?), the trip leader was outstanding. His knowledge of the flora and fauna was spot on. His personal manner was always empathetic and thorough, with a scholarly approach. Not only could he quickly find with his scope and identify incredibly diverse animal calls and species, he knew a lot about how all these creatures and plants survive and interact.
We suspect Lenin had some input with the choices of once-in-a-lifetime Road Scholar visits to schools, farms, protected natural areas, and cultural life of Costa Rica. His local knowledge and visible friendship with all these folks demonstrated a deep appreciation for his country's values and traditions.
Pura vida... trip leaders like Lenin encourage us to keep coming back

Our guide, Jimmy Trejos, was the best guide I have ever had for any tour, ever. He was very conscious of our safety and looked after each person, without being smothering. He was sensitive to each of our personal interests. If we saw a snake he would make sure to point it out to the snake lovers. For the bird lovers, there was an endless number of birds that he pointed out and named. He was extremely knowledgeable and showed pride in his country. He made it clear that we could make decisions about what to do and not to do during our trip. If we were tired and chose to rest during a lecture, we could do so without rebuke. As a tour guide, Jimmy is simply the bet!

Our trip to Costa Rica was even better than we expected it would be. We traveled from the Caribbean to the Pacific and saw so much in between. We loved the rain forest and the birds, monkeys, sloths and other wildlife. One day we just sat quietly in a boat on the river and listened to all that was going on in the forest. Wonderful. I would do it again for sure.

I found this trip very educational and a fun way to learn the history and current state of Costa Rica. The only change I can think of would be to update the list of clothing etc. While realizing that it was probably a "One list fits all programs", I and some of my fellow travelers found we packed many things that we did not need on this particular trip. For future travelers I would say Less is More.

This program is in the top 3 of my road scholar adventures. It is an excellent introduction to the natural history of Costa Rica, covering most major life zones including both the Pacific and Carribean regions. Our guide, Pedro B. was outstanding: he was extremely knowledgeable about the natural history, cultural history and agriculture of Costa Rica. He was also great at spotting birds and other wildlife and ensured that everyone got a chance to observe them. The guest lecturers included a number of excellent talks on the ecology of the rainforest, history of conservation, as well as personal history. The program was very diverse with a major emphasis on wildlife, but also included human history, agriculture, school visits, rafting, as well as time on the beach. Finally, I felt good knowing that my money went to support people and organizations that are committed to sustainability and protecting the rainforest.
Even though there are programs dedicated to bird watching in Costa Rica, I would still recommend this program to people interested in birds, because there are a lot of opportunities for bird watching and this program is one of the few that includes Tortuguero, which is a great park for observing wildlife. Plus you get to learn about other aspects of the country.
For those interested in independent travel, the program introduces you to a number of locations that you may to wish to go back to on your own. We took three days at the end of the program to go back to one of the locations and take tours with the local guides. This added a lot to our overall experience.

This was a wonderful trip and focusing on the natural wonders of the country including bird watching, animal finding, eco-systems, biodiversity, agriculture, etc. William Sanchez was a good naturalist. There is a lot of bird watching but that is not the exclusive focus of the trip. A devoted bird watcher would want to pick the birding specific tour offered by Road Scholar. We really enjoyed the cultural stops and field trips to alpaca farm, textile industry, coffee plantation, heart of palm plantation & restraurant (best meal of trip) and cocoa plantation. The evening lectures by guest and the commentary about politics, education, history, etc. given by the naturalist on long bus segments were very well done and extremely educational.
We liked this trip because we saw so much of the country from coast to coast and all the various eco-systems. There were long bus trip days getting between places but there does not seem to be a way around that if you want to cover a lot of ground so you see more than just a small area of the country.
We only had night rain and one light morning rain during our 2 week trip in Feb. The walking is not strenuous and usually each outing is 45 minutes to 2 hours. Not all of the trails are paved so there are uneven surfaces. The lodging was upscale and in lush, interesting settings.

A true eco-tourism experience! This equatorial country has so very much to offer - from Atlantic to Pacific coasts, with mountains in the middle. Rain forests that are so lush, full of fantastic colors, & less dense, less colorful, drier but still beautiful still beautiful forests. There is nowhere in this country, outside of the cities, that does not offer a vast variety of wildlife & flora! The birds & vegetation especially are overwhelmingly colorful - that's stated by someone who is not a birder or gardener! I couldn't get enough of our forest walks! And the tour included adventures other than flora & fauna sightings, like white-water rafting & river & coach rides that exposed us to the vast beauties of the land.

Wonderful trip: nice accommodations, plentiful good food, fascinating ecodiversity and history, welcoming friendly people. The guide was knowledgeable , detailed, funny, organized, and a nice guy who enjoys his job and really knows what he's doing.

The Best of Costa Rica, Exploring Natural Wonders, in January was a perfect time of year to visit Costa Rica, coast to coast. You will experience the food, culture, exotic birds, and animals, and history of this compact and complex country. Our guide was knowledgeable, personable and helpful, and the accommodations were very nice. The physical terrain is beautiful and able to be hiked with a minimum of effort. The wide range of natural forests, plants, and animal life we experienced in the time we were there was amazing. I was not an avid bird watcher before, but now I see why people visit this country just for that reason alone. North Americans who care for the environment and beautiful places share much with in common with Costa Rica.

This was our first group tour and we were not confident that we would like the structure of the group tour. We found this tour to exceed our wildest hopes. Jorge, our group leader, made the program a huge success and the fellow travelers on the trip were wonderful. We gained much more from the tour than if we had gone on our own. We are now convinces that this is the way to travel.

I would rate this trip 10 stars if I could! Each day was better than the last, with so many fabulous animals, birds, plants and beautiful locations to explore and learn about at each stop. Our guide and bus driver were both outstanding and made me feel very safe. The food and accommodations ranged from great to exceptional. My only regret? It ended too soon!
