Going Solo Doesn’t Mean Going Alone: The Benefits of Solo Travel with Road Scholar
- If you’ve been considering traveling solo, Road Scholar learning adventures offer the perfect balance between comfort and independence, camaraderie and new experiences.
- Road Scholars can travel solo on any adventure, and designated Go Solo programs offer an especially supportive atmosphere.
- Road Scholars Brenda, Nancy and Anne all share their experiences traveling solo on Road Scholar adventures.
Did you know that 30% of Road Scholars travel solo each year? That means almost a third of Road Scholars are heading out on learning adventures by themselves, independently selecting what they want to learn about and discovering new places. Solo travelers love exploring with Road Scholar for many different reasons, including the comfort and freedom group travel offers. And it’s easy to make new friends — many solo travelers enjoy experiencing a new place alongside other people who are as interested as they are in that topic, city, region or waterway.
You can experience Road Scholar programs as a solo traveler both on one of our many engaging adventures or specifically with other solo travelers on our new Go Solo programs. Each option offers its own benefits, but no matter what learning adventure you choose, you’ll enjoy the companionship of other Road Scholars, expert Group Leaders and local instructors. Whether you embark on one of our Go Solo adventures or choose to enroll in another program by yourself, you’ll be surrounded by others who love to learn and explore as much as you do!
What’s the Difference Between Traveling Solo and Go Solo Programs?
Anyone can join a Road Scholar program on their own. Go Solo programs, however, are designed specifically for travelers going alone. Because every participant is traveling independently, these programs often create a welcoming environment and make it easy to connect from the start.
When You Travel on a Go Solo Program, You’ll…
- Explore a new place exclusively with other solo travelers, so you’ll all make new friends!
- Enjoy a single room all to yourself.
- Lean on the support of your fellow solo travelers and rely on the expertise of your expert Group Leaders together.
Whichever way you choose, your program will offer you the chance to explore what you’re curious about and make your own decisions about what you’re learning, while enjoying the safety and comfort that comes with traveling with a group.

Don’t Just Take Our Word For It
Participants love traveling solo with Road Scholar so much that they’re telling everyone about it! Solo Road Scholar Brenda said, “Just returned from the Rim to Shore program in Costa Rica. This was my first time solo traveling, and it couldn't have been more delightful. I felt included from the beginning and enjoyed sharing the educational adventures with a great group of people. The blend of lectures, field trips and active adventures was the perfect recipe for a memorable experience.”
And Road Scholar Anne said, “As a solo traveler, it was wonderful to be a part of the group and learn from others, as well as from the experts. On my own, I probably wouldn't have visited some of the stops that were on the program, but everything is interesting when your group is treated as educational travelers and given exclusive access.”
“I went on Survival of the Fittest: Hiking, Biking & Water Sports on the Galápagos Islands by myself and yet was never lonely, nor did I feel uncomfortable in any way,” Road Scholar Nancy said. “All of the participants were friendly, interested in one another and welcoming. I will not hesitate to take another Road Scholar program even if I have no one to travel with.”
