Imagine: You’ve Won! What You’ll Discover on Our Great Global Giveaway Adventure to Antarctica
Imagine this: you open up your January 2025 Road Scholar catalog to find a golden ticket inside. You’ve won our Great Global Giveaway, our contest celebrating 50 years of Road Scholar offering seven learning adventures of a lifetime for two people, including airfare, on one of seven continents.
Now imagine the adventure that you won is an expedition to the magnificent landscapes of Antarctica. After travelling through the storied Drake Passage, you’ll arrive in a frozen wonderland as you step foot in one of the most remote environments on earth. It will be the journey of a lifetime — here are our top sites along the way for you to look forward to!
Tierra del Fuego National Park
Argentina’s first shoreline park is one of the first stops on your journey to Antarctica. Located at the southern edge of South America, this park is home to muskrats, sea birds and guanacos, an animal that is closely related to the llama. Walk the park’s trails to enjoy scenic water views and learn about the area’s human history before embarking on your expedition ship.
The Drake Passage
The Drake Passage is a 600 mile stretch of waterway between South America and Antarctica that has played an influential role in ecosystems and human travel. Prior to the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914, trade routes went around South America and through the Drake Passage, marking a dangerous stage in the journey for sailors of the time. Your journey will take a different route on a two-day voyage across the Drake Passage towards Antarctica, including crossing the Antarctic Convergence, a meeting of cold polar water flowing north and warmer sub-Antarctic water moving in the opposite direction.
South Shetland Islands
The South Shetlands Islands offer your first opportunity to step foot on Antarctica, and the beginning of your six days of sailing around this fascinating continent. Board a Zodiac, a smaller inflatable vessel, to get up close to the natural wonders of Antarctica. Learn from naturalists and biologists and explore volcanic islands and icebergs, all while keeping an eye out for wildlife, especially Antarctica’s most famous residents — penguins!
Buenos Aires
An additional highlight of this journey is Buenos Aires, the “Paris of South America.” You’ll fly in and out of this city at the beginning and end of your learning adventure, and you’ll also spend some time at the beginning of your program exploring the culture of the city and its nearby countryside. Take a day to learn about the lives of gauchos, or South American horsemen, and enjoy a typical Argentine asado, or barbeque.
