Travel Tips & Adventures That Your Mind & Wallet Will Love

Learning doesn’t have to be expensive — if you’re on a budget, Road Scholar has many options for exploring and making new discoveries, all while being kind to your wallet. Here are a few of our favorite tips for keeping costs down while still studying new places and subjects.

Filter Your Search by Cost

Did you know that you can filter your learning adventure search on our website by cost? There are dozens of Road Scholar adventures available for under $1,500, from reveling in gardens and natural landscapes in North Carolina to learning about the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright to exploring Québec City. And remember, when you travel with Road Scholar, most of your travel costs are included in your program price, including accommodations, expert-led learning experiences, gratuities and most meals.

Explore Our Special Offers

In addition to programs with low costs, we also include special offers on many adventures. These can range from included airfare to special savings when you enroll early to no extra cost for single travelers. Save a little and learn a lot!

Make New Discoveries With Online Learning

From one-hour lectures to multi-day online adventures, Road Scholar At Home allows you to continue your studies without the cost of airfare or the need to plan for time away. These online programs can fit seamlessly into a busy schedule and offer looks at iconic sites and fascinating topics. You’ll even have the chance to ask your expert instructors questions and have discussions with other Road Scholars, just like on-site adventures.

Make a New Friend With a Roommate Match

Are you traveling solo but want to avoid paying a single supplement price for a single room? Ask to be paired with a roommate when you call to enroll in your program, or select “Pair me with a roommate” when you enroll online. Not only will you enjoy savings, but you’ll also enjoy a wider variety of adventures to choose from — and the opportunity to make an instant new friend.

Consider Our Scholarship Opportunities

If learning adventures seem out of your budget right now, you might want to explore our financial aid options. These include Caregiver Grants for those taking care of others, PEAR scholarships for educators, financial assistance for our Adventures Online and general scholarship opportunities. If you or someone you know would love to attend a Road Scholar learning adventure but cannot afford to at this time, we encourage you to apply for one of our scholarships.

Plan an Adventure Close to Home

Did you know you can search for learning adventures by state on our website? Simply go to our Find a Trip page and select the state(s) you want to learn in from the “Destinations” filter on the left of the page. Exploring closer to home can make it easier to get to and from your learning location and cut down on travel costs, as well as offering you a new appreciation for your state or region!

Travel With Friends!

There are many benefits to traveling with friends, from comfort to the joy of sharing new discoveries. Another benefit is sharing costs — if you’re driving to a learning adventure or staying for a few extra days after your program, you can generally split the cost of travel and accommodations.

Plan in Advance

It’s not always so simple, but planning in advance means you’ll have the greatest number of options available to you, from learning adventures to program dates. You’ll also have time to make your payments to Road Scholar — for many of our adventures, you only have to put down a deposit to secure your spot upon enrollment, and then you can continue to make payments toward your adventure as it gets closer. Advance planning also gives you more options to choose from when it comes to travel to and from your program, allowing you to find the least expensive method of transportation.
