In the magnificent Rocky Mountains of Colorado, tackle challenging hikes to stunning peaks while you learn the geology, ecology and history of Colorado’s most scenic trails. Choose the basecamp that best suits you, either the historic mining towns of Ouray or Crested Butte, the “Wildflower Capital of Colorado.” Trek through extraordinary Rocky Mountain wilderness, including lush forests, flowering meadows, alpine tundra and rugged peaks. Discover the wildlife and natural history of these unforgettable landscapes from expert naturalists and geologists.
Activity Level
Hiking varies by program date. Hikes range from 4-12 miles a day at elevations of 8,000-13,000 feet. Pre-conditioning above 5,000 feet strongly recommended.

Peter McCarville is a consulting geologist, geological instructor and educator who has lived in Colorado on the western slope since 1995. He also works as an instructor and program designer for Mountains and Plains Institute (MPILLS), leading hiking and skiing excursions, while making cameo appearances as a geology expert on other programs. He has a wonderful ability to convey complex natural history in layman's terms.
