Activity note: All activities take place at the hotel today. If you arrive early you may walk to the bayfront or the marina, which be at your own pace.

Afternoon: Orientation: The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the program theme, the up-to-date Daily Schedule and any changes, discuss safety guidelines, emergency procedures including contact numbers for key staff, roles and responsibilities, and answer any questions you may have. Because our programs are planned far in advance, specific information about performances was not available at the time of publication. It will be published on our website as soon as announced and will be included in preparatory materials sent following enrollment. Transportation for scheduled program activities is via bus unless indicated otherwise. We have set aside some free time in the schedule for your personal independent exploration. Please be aware that program activities, schedules, and personnel may need to change due to local circumstances. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

Dinner: Dinner will be at 6:00pm in our private room at the hotel and includes a salad, entrée, dessert and beverage choices including coffee (regular/decaf), tea (iced/hot), water; other beverages are available for purchase.

Evening: Spend time becoming better acquainted with participants and program staff. Find out what you have in common beyond a love of learning! The rest of the evening is yours to continue making new friends or just to relax and prepare for the full day of activity ahead. You are about to embark on a full week of the "Asolo Theatre," a learning adventure in downtown Sarasota where your hotel is located.

Activity note: All classes and performance will be held at the hotel. Walk at your own pace to bayfront/marina or through downtown Sarasota at your leisure.

Breakfast: In the hotel, partake in breakfast buffet includes a variety of choices such as eggs, sausage, bacon, yogurt, oatmeal, biscuits, muffins, waffles, and cereal, plus assorted juices, coffee, tea, water. Made to order omelets are available. (Allow extra time for this special service.)

Morning: We will begin at the hotel with an introduction to theater by our very own theater maven. Theater as an art form began in ancient Greece in the city-state of Athens. It soon evolved from hymns to Dionysius to comedy and drama, and today includes ballet, musicals, opera, plays, and more. At the end of the presentation, we will have a short break before reconvening. We’ll then continue with our survey of theater history and an introduction to the first performance.

Lunch: At the hotel, in our private room, enjoy a catered lunch from the hotel's restaurant; an entree salad with or without protein, a sweet treat, plus beverage choices including coffee (regular/decaf), hot tea and ice water, other beverages are available for purchase.

Afternoon: We’ll be joined by a circus clown for an overview of clowning and circus history in Sarasota. John Ringling — of the Ringling Brothers who helped create the modern circus — made Sarasota the circus’s winter headquarters. As one of the wealthiest men in the world, Ringling was vital to the development of modern Sarasota. OPTIONAL DVD: View a Three-Ring Circus Documentary. Or take a walk on the bayfront to catch some fresh sea air and view yachts and other boats at our active marina. Remember this afternoon to please make your dinner reservations for a restaurant in downtown Sarasota on the assigned evening. Group Leaders have copies of menus.

Dinner: Dinner will be at 6:00pm at the hotel in our private meeting room and includes a salad, entrée, dessert and beverage choices including coffee (regular/decaf), tea (iced/hot), water; other beverages are available for purchase.

Evening: Discover the freedom of spontaneity and prepare to laugh! “Improv Comedy for Everyone” will teach students to think quickly on their feet, explore creativity, hone their comedic voice, and build self-confidence. Participants will focus on the tenets of improvisation by learning how to play together, make others look good, be confident, support each other, and have fun, all while learning some of the classic improv games made famous by shows like “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” If you don’t want to participate be an audience member to cheer your fellow students on.

Ringling Museum Complex, See a Performance

Activity note: The Ringling Complex: Walking up to 1-1/4 miles, long periods of standing; benches available. When attending the theatre the bus will drop participants off in front of theatre and will pick up in front of the theatre.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: A short bus ride to the extraordinary estate John Ringing willed to the state of Florida includes the Ringling's 56-room Venetian-style mansion, Ca' d'Zan; the Museum of Art, designated as Florida’s official state art museum; the historic Asolo Theater; the Circus Museum and its Tibbals Learning Center; and much more. With a local expert, we will explore palatial Ca’ d’Zan, (ticketed timed walk through) described as “the last of the Gilded Age mansions” to be built in America. You will also have time to explore the Circus Museum with docents who will present costumes, parade wagons, posters, a 44,000-piece model circus, and more.

Lunch: We will select luncheon choices prior to arrival at the museum’s table service restaurant, MUSE. Select an entrée salad with or without protein a sandwich or wrap with the chef’s choice of dessert and beverages including soda, coffee (regular/decaf), tea (iced/hot), water; other beverages are available for purchase.

Afternoon: We will continue exploring the extraordinary Ringling Museum of Art that Mr. Ringling considered his chief legacy. He and Mrs. Ringling were art lovers who made numerous European trips. Their love of Sarasota developed into a goal of making it a cultural and educational center with the museum at its heart. They collected thousands of objects from antiquity, medieval and Renaissance decorative arts, magnificent Old Masters, and whole rooms from other mansions. The incredible building that houses this exceptional collection was designed to emulatethe Uffizi Gallery in Florence. You will then have free time to walk through the beautifully landscaped gardens and grounds — including Mrs. Ringling’s rose garden — with more than 400 species of exotic Florida trees, plants, and flowers adorned with sculpture. The bus will take us back to the hotel with plenty of time to freshen up before dinner.

Dinner: Dinner will be at the hotel in our private meeting room and includes a salad, entrée, dessert and beverage choices including coffee (regular/decaf), tea (iced/hot), water; other beverages are available for purchase. After dinner we will have a short bus ride to the Asolo Theater.

Evening: See a performance at the Asolo Rep Theatre. Details to follow when schedule is announced. After the performance our bus will return you to the hotel.

Backstage Visit, Class, Leisure time, See a Performance

Activity note: The backstage visit moves at moderate pace; elevator and stairs to the costume shop. From the hotel you can walk and explore the area before dinner. When attending the theatre the bus will drop participants off in front of theatre and will pick up in front of the theatre.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: Boarding the bus, enjoy a short ride to the Asolo Theatre, where an actor from one of the performances will meet us for a private talk. Afterwards, we’ll go behind-the-scenes of the Asolo Theatre with a member of the staff for a look at backstage operations including the costume shop.

Lunch: At the Asolo Theatre, choose from a variety of tea sandwiches and pasta salad, plus dessert and lemonade.

Afternoon: After lunch the bus will pick up participants return back to the hotel. There will be a talkback on the previously viewed performance and introduction to our next play. LEISURE TIME: There will be a two-hour window of time for a chance to walk to the bayfront/marina or explore downtown Sarasota or simply enjoy the hotel amenities and great view from the pool.

Dinner: Board our bus for a visit to a local Amish restaurant where there is a thriving community called Pinecraft where Amish and Mennonite community live. Partake in an extensive buffet offering salads, several choices of main dish and side dishes, plus dessert and beverage choices including coffee (regular/decaf), tea (iced/hot) and water. Through a former resident, learn more about Amish and Mennonites and the one-of-a-kind Pinecraft community where many Amish and conservative Mennonites spend the winter. Our bus will depart directly to the theater.

Evening: See a performance at the Asolo Rep Theatre. Details to follow when schedule is announced. After the performance our bus will return participants back to the hotel.

Lectures, Leisure afternoon, Performance

Activity note: Walk to dinner on your own, many downtown restaurants are in walking distance of hotel. When attending the theatre the bus will drop participants off in front of theatre and will pick up in front of the theatre.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: At the hotel, a theater expert will join us to continue our introduction to theater with a discussion of acting styles and an overview of our next play.

Lunch: At the hotel.

Afternoon: At your leisure. Another opportunity to further explore the bayfront and active marina and historic downtown Sarasota, which is chocked full of art galleries and culture galore.

Dinner: Your chance to dine on your own or with new friends. There are a plethera of Zagat rated restaurants in the area, or dine at a more casual restaurant; we have them all. The group leader will be happy to offer suggestions and give directions. br> We will rendezvous at an appointed time and place for next stop the Asolo Rep Theatre, via bus. There will also be a pick up at the hotel for those who may decide not to venture out for dinner.

Evening: See a performance at the Asolo Rep Theatre. Details to follow when schedule is announced. After the performance the bus will return participants back to the hotel.

Morning: PRESENTATION: A costumer from the Asolo Theatre will share information about the art of costume designing from head to toe. A short break with time to check-out of hotel room. Talkback on play seen yesterday and Art of Performance.

Lunch: Pick up your custom pre-ordered box lunch you may enjoy in our private meeting room, pool area or take away with you. This concludes our program.
