Location: Chautauqua
The Athenaeum Hotel, built in 1881 in grand Second Empire style, is one of the few vacation hotels of its kind still in operation in the United States. Located adjacent to the Amphitheater at the center of the Chautauqua Institution grounds, the hotel has provided accommodations for distinguished speakers and performers throughout its long history. Thomas Edison is said to have used the floor-to-ceiling windows of the dining room to escape overzealous admirers. In 1996, the Athenaeum became the Executive Mansion of the President of the United States when President Bill Clinton spent a week at the hotel preparing for a debate with Sen. Robert Dole. Athenaeum Hotel Rooms – a blend of authentic period furnishings and fixtures preserve the Athenaeum’s rich historical presence and extend a cordial Victorian-style welcome to our guests.
