At a Glance

Make music with fellow musicians at Hidden Valley Music Seminars. Big band players gather to participate in rehearsals and music classes under the guidance of a seasoned professional conductor and teacher. Between classes, enjoy informal jam sessions and the serene and inspiring beauty of Carmel Valley nestled amongst oak and buckeye hillsides. The week will be filled with inspiring musical sessions that culminate in putting on live performance at the Big Band Dinner Dance. Rehearsals, repertoire, and approach will be tailored to participant skills and interests with selections ranging from Big Band classics to more contemporary and jazz inspired compositions.

General Notes

This program is designed for intermediate to advanced players in saxophone, trumpet (flugelhorn double optional), trombone, clarinet, guitar, bass viol (or bass guitar), drum set, percussion, piano, and vocalist. The Hidden Valley campus features a beautiful nine-foot Steinway piano. Repertoire will be selected at the beginning of the program to accommodate the number of participants and their skills. Due to the nature of this program, listening devices are not available.

Craig Buhler
For the past 15 years, Craig Buhler has been a full-time instructor in clarinet, saxophone, flute, ear training, and improvisation. He is the director of the 17-piece Stardust Dance Band — where he plays first tenor sax — as well as big bands at Camp Heebie Jeebies and the Northwest Big Band Workshop. Craig has released nine CDs and is a charter member of the rock band, “HONK,” a group that has performed with the Beach Boys, Loggins & Messina, Jackson Browne and others.
