1
Check-in, Registration, Orientation, Welcome Dinner

Afternoon: Participants can check into the Marble Canyon Lodge after 2:00 PM. The Road Scholar program registration will be at 5:00 PM. Check with the motel front desk clerk for exact group meeting location. Meeting location will either be in the historic Marble Canyon Lodge located across the street from the motel office or in the Convenience Store conference room. Your coordinator will greet you and present you with program materials, name tag, the up-to-date schedule, other important information we will review during orientation, and to confirm the time and place of the session. If you arrive late, please pick up your packet at the front desk. Dinner will follow registration in the Marble Canyon Restaurant Travel throughout the week travel will be in 10 passenger vans. Throughout the program, your naturalist Group Leader will describe and explain aspects such as geology, geography, human, and natural history as we pass though spectacular scenery.

Dinner: Marble Canyon Lodge serves a selection of plated American classic meals including lime chicken, pot roast and select pasta dishes plus soup and salad bar. Water, ice tea, and coffee are included. Alcoholic beverages available at the restaurant bar.

Evening: After dinner the Northern Arizona University Road Scholar Group Leader will direct a program orientation and lead group introductions back at the historic Marble Canyon Lodge. The Group Leader will review the up-to-date daily schedule and any changes, discuss hiking requirements and equipment needs, safety guidelines, and answer any questions you may have. Program activities, schedules, personnel, and indicated distances or times may be changed due to local conditions/circumstances. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Chocolate Cliffs Hike

Activity note: Chocolate Cliffs Hike:(4- 6 miles and ~700 feet of elevation gain). A full 7 hour day of off trail hiking in a wilderness setting. Prepare for scrambling up and down hillsides with uneven footing and loose rocks at times. Helpful hiking skills and tips such as hiking techniques and foot placement through various terrain and pacing will be communicated throughout the week by your knowledgeable leaders. Driving time for day minimal.

Breakfast: Enjoy a hearty breakfast at the Marble Canyon Lodge restaurant. Hot and cold buffet items including eggs, potatoes, meat, pancakes, oatmeal, fruit, yogurt, coffee, tea, and juice will be offered.

Morning: After breakfast, depart for the Chocolate Cliffs Hike. Hike up the base of the Chocolate Cliffs utilizing abandoned road beds and rocky routes to discover 1000 year old petroglyphs, ancient petrified logs and jaw dropping views of the Vermilion and Echo Cliffs. The majority of this hike will be off trail with potential new discoveries and scenic vistas around every corner. This is a true "off the beaten path" adventure and a favorite of local guides.

Lunch: Sack lunch on the trail. Sack lunches for the week will contain a rotating selection of sandwiches, chips, fruit and cookie.

Afternoon: Continue our hike through incredible scenery.

Dinner: Plated dinner at the Marble Canyon Lodge restaurant.

Evening: Learn about the challenges and successes of the California Condor reintroduction project, presented by a biologist from the Peregrine Fund - the lead organization for the reintroduction effort.The California Condor reintroduction release site (and holding pens) are located just down the road from Marble Canyon Lodge atop the Vermilion Cliffs and is at the center of this multi-agency recovery effort.

Cathedral Butte and Cathedral Wash Hike

Activity note: Cathedral Butte Hike: 1/4 mile walk to approach. Approximately 200 feet elevation gain short but steep scramble to spectacular promontory. Cathedral Wash Hike: 2.5 miles round trip. Hike in canyon floor and along outcropping ledges. Some sit down / step down maneuvers along the hike. Hiking time for day approximately 7 hours. Driving time for day minimal.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the Marble Canyon Lodge restaurant.

Morning: After breakfast depart for the Cathedral Butte and Cathedral Wash hike. The Cathedral Wash hike to the Colorado River begins from the Lee's Ferry Road and winds along the floor of the canyon as the walls rise higher and higher. Some step downs, rock maneuvering and gravel will be encountered. The reward is a close encounter with the Colorado River and a hidden, private "beach".

Lunch: Trail lunch.

Afternoon: Continue your hiking exploration.

Dinner: Plated dinner at Marble Canyon Lodge.

Evening: Enjoy a presentation by a Native American tribal member on the traditional culture and modern challenges of the Navajo or Hopi people in the Marble Canyon Lodge.

Waterholes Canyon Hike

Activity note: Driving time: 40 minutes to trailhead. 2 mile approach hike to canyon over sandy terrain with climb to mesa top viewpoint approx. 400 feet. Waterholes Canyon hiking portion approx. 2 miles. Slot canyon hiking on sandy floor. Some narrow rock maneuvers that require one person at a time to negotiate before next person can proceed. Spectacular scenery!

Breakfast: Breakfast at the Marble Canyon Lodge Restaurant.

Morning: Depart for Waterholes Canyon. A true slot canyon hiking experience. The terrain on the first part of the hike and the approach to Waterholes Canyon will be over rolling sand hills with long sweeping views of the Paria Plateau, distant southern Utah mesas and beyond. The group will descend into Waterholes Wash proper and continue downstream. The canyon walls will begin to rise as the canyon floor narrows until you are immersed in a world of twisting, swirling rock formations.

Lunch: Trail Lunch.

Afternoon: Continue your hiking exploration.

Dinner: Dinner at Marble Canyon Lodge Restaurant.

Evening: Evening at your leisure.

Boat ride on the Colorado River

Activity note: Fall Canyon Hike: 3 mile transport by boat from Lee Ferry to Fall Canyon and return. The hike is approximately 4.5 miles round trip. Established route to the end of the canyon. Hike along canyon floor and along canyon bank. Some scrambling to access amphitheater at the head of the canyon. Driving time for day minimal.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the Marble Canyon Lodge Restaurant.

Morning: FALL CANYON HIKE - from Lee's Ferry shuttle by boat upstream on the Colorado River. Fall Canyon is located on the south side of the river at the base of the Echo Cliffs. This 4 + mile secluded (and exclusive) canyon hike will take you to spectacular red rock amphitheater formations. This hike should be considered among one of the many highlights of the week!

Lunch: Trail lunch.

Afternoon: Continue your hiking exploration. Shuttle back by boat to Lee's Ferry.

Dinner: Plated dinner at Marble Canyon Lodge Restaurant.

Evening: Enjoy a select evening program on a regional subject. Topics may include Lee's Ferry, Mormon or Southwest history, Canyon Country geology or musical entertainment.

Activity note: Today's hiking will be approximately 4 - 6 miles and will be a combination of trail and off trail terrain. Elevation gain of 500" approximately. Some rock scrambling requiring the use of your hands to manuver around boulders. is approximately 4.5 miles round trip. Driving time for day minimal.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the Marble Canyon Lodge Restaurant.

Morning: Today is an "Instructor's Choice" hiking day. The Group Leader will gauge the interest and abilities of the group and choose a suitable hiking destination for the day. Possible destinations include The Sand Crack, Lee's Backbone, Paria Canyon or Spencer Trail to name a few locations. Each and every one of the listed destination hikes is a classic red rock adventure with rewarding views and memories to last a life time!

Lunch: Lunch on the trail.

Afternoon: Continue hiking. This hike is another one where you will feel privileged to be on a trail that is experienced by few others.

Dinner: Plated dinner at Marble Canyon Lodge Restaurant.

Evening: Program wrap up in the Marble canyon Lodge. Share some laughs and highlights as we reflect upon the weeks accomplishments with your new friends.

Morning: Hotel check by 11:00 AM. Program concludes at 8:15 AM. The Road Scholar van departs Marble Canyon at 8:15 AM and will shuttle to the Flagstaff Visitor Center (Amtrak Station) arriving by 10:30 AM. For those continuing on to the Phoenix airport, Van Go Shuttle will immediately transfer to Phoenix with arrival at the airport by 1:00 PM. Book departing flight for after 3:00 PM.
