Dinner: Dinner is a buffet in the Empire Cafe (dining hall) with a variety of choices. Grandparents are responsible for supervising their grandchildren in their selections. The college food service is supervised by the Oregon Coast Culinary Institute (OCCI) and offers opportunities for OCCI students to work under the direction of industry professionals.
Evening: WELCOME & INTRODUCTIONS: Meet the program staff and begin getting to know your fellow participants. ORIENTATION: We will have an informative overview of the program including a review of the updated daily schedule, responsibilities, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, your gear, and answer any questions you may have.
Breakfast: Breakfast on the go.
Morning: Field Trips: During the drive to Elkton we will watch a family friendly movie. We will make a stop at The Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area. The area is year-round residence for a herd of about 100 Roosevelt elk. A mild winter climate and abundant food allow the Roosevelt elk to remain at the Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area all year. Morning and evening are the best viewing times, but elk may be out at any time of day. Start at the interpretive facility. A series of panels tells about elk and the environment of the Dean Creek area. Use the spotting scope at the facility or your own binoculars or spotting scope to scan the area. You may spot elk anywhere throughout the meadows. They may be lying down, so do not neglect to carefully peruse the tall grass. The viewing area stretches almost 3 miles along the south side of the road, so be sure and drive its length. There are turnouts along the way where you can stop to watch. The journey will continue to Elkton, where we will meet Todd Hannah ("The Oregon Angler") at his home and ready for the fishing trip.
Lunch: Lunch will be on the Umpqua River with the fishing teams.
Afternoon: Field Trip: Fish along the beautiful Umpqua River. Fishing is done on a wild and remote section of the river and all fishing is catch and release only using barbless hooks. This insures the future of one of the most productive Umpqua River fisheries. The National television show "America's Outdoor Journal" chose "The Oregon Angler" as their Umpqua River Smallmouth Bass fishing guide. "The Oregon Angler" teams up with a near-by lodge where you will enjoy an outback dinner.
Dinner: A lovely Dinner at a Ranch off the Umpqua River.

Morning: Lecture: Marty Giles will impart a wealth of knowledge as she talks about the formation of the Oregon Coast, the sea critters found during tide pooling, Oregon's not-so-crazy weather, and answer any questions. Field Trip: Start the day off with tide pool exploration at Sunset Bay led by naturalist Marty Giles. During low tide we will walk out over the slippery and rugged rocky outcroppings to learn about what is on the ocean floor. We'll search for sea stars, sea urchins, mussels, and other interesting marine life. Following our tide pool adventure, we will drive to Simpson Reef to see pinnipeds at Cape Arago.
Lunch: Enjoy a picnic lunch at Shore Acres State Park. After lunch, take a leisurely stroll through the botanical gardens and hidden beach of Shore Acres. At the outlook you can check out the view of the crashing waves.
Afternoon: Field Trips: We will have the pleasure of meeting a member of a local Native American tribe who will talk about his culture and traditions. Following the presentation, our group will have an afternoon of beach activities with an ambiance fire! Get any end-of-the-day questions answered by Marty, learn more about the sand and ocean, play on the beach, toast marshmallows, and make s'mores.
Dinner: BBQ Beach Dinner. Catered and served on the beach at Sunset Bay! Make room for dessert too as we'll be toasting marshmallows and making s'mores later in the evening.

Morning: Field Trip: Hike the John Dellenback Trail with naturalist Marty Giles. Learn about sand, sand formation, the surrounding terrain, and plants and animals that live in the sand dunes. We will experience the rugged terrain as you hike the one mile trail. The halfway mark of the trail is the challenge-by-choice walk to the top of a major mountain of sand! At the top you will feel like you can see the sand dunes forever! Bring you camera and good hiking shoes.
Lunch: Picnic Lunch
Afternoon: Field Trip: After finishing our meal, our group will drive up to Sandland Adventures in Florence. The group will feel the thrill of riding a Giant Dune Buggy through 8 miles of dunes and 2 miles of beach. In this 1-hour scenic tour, we will learn about the dunes from our guide and experience their vastness firsthand.

Morning: Field Trip: Enjoy the morning by exploring the Cape Blanco Lighthouse with a guided tour. Pictures cannot capture the majestic view of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding terrain from the top of the Lighthouse, so do not miss out!
Lunch: We will have a picnic lunch at Humbug Mountain State Park. Feel free take a seat at a picnic table or under a Myrtlewood tree as you eat your lunch!
Afternoon: Field Trip: Jump on board! Our group will ride on the World Famous Jerry's Jet Boats as we go 32 miles up the Rogue River. The ride will be narrated by the knowledgeable navigators as we hope to spot ospreys, bald eagles, black bears, and other wildlife! Be sure to wear layers, caps, and gloves. Bring binoculars and cameras in protective containers so they do not get wet. Hang on tight and have a great experience!
Dinner: Dinner will be provided by Lucas Lodge in Agness, Oregon next to the Rogue River. Take a sip of the fresh lemonade or tea to cool down from the heat! Dinner is served "family style," meaning everyone sits at long picnic tables and passes the food around the table just like at home. Lucas Lodge is the original home and is still owned and operated by the original family. You can look forward to a delicious home cooked meal!
Evening: Field Trip: Our group will hop back onto Jerry's Jet Boats and go back up the Rogue River, completing the other half of our 64-mile trip! We will hope to spot otters, blue herons, jumping fish, and more wildlife! Once back on the dock we will board the bus around 8:00 p.m. By then end of the day, you will be tired, sometimes cold, but very happy! We usually play a kid friendly movie on the bus ride home and will get back to campus around 10:00 p.m.

Morning: Field Trip and Hands-on: Ever wonder what items wash up on the shore? (Plastic.) Maybe even what happens to items that have been washed ashore? (Works of art.) At the Washed Ashore Exhibit you will learn about marine debris and plastic pollution. After you walk through the exhibits, workshop time has been allotted for you and your grandchild to assemble an art piece that will be added to the works of art.

Afternoon: Field Trip: Following the presentation, a trip to the Coos Historical and Maritime Museum will solidify your newly acquired insight. A representative of the museum will walk us through the exhibits, images, and archives. Additionally, there will be visits to local historical and cultural sites to help us discover the issues and relevance of local history. We will focus on the economic and transportation issues of the local coal and timber industries to unveil the culture and landscape of the Coos County region.
Dinner: Farewell dinner on campus. Time to relax and visit before packing up to head home on Friday.
