This adventure exceeded our wildest dreams. Road Scholar handled all logistics seamlessly. Eddie, our brilliant and masterful guide, has deep experience with the culture and the land. I truly think he is a wildlife whisperer, with a sixth sense for animal and bird behaviour. We were side-by-side with elephants, giraffes, zebras, and lions, just to name a few! Eddy was so joyful and passionate about giving us the best experience that our entire trip was thrills and fun. Immersion in the educational and cultural experiences (visiting a school and a Masaai village) was very special. The food was fresh and plentiful, and there were many bathroom breaks throughout the day. The accommodations were fabulous, a highlight being the Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge. We will cherish every minute of this priceless experience.

This program was the trip of a lifetime. It exceeded our expectations on every level. We are now Road Scholar converts and will be traveling with them again. If you want to go on an authentic Safari with a great guide and an incredible mix of natural beauty and interesting cultural aspects you will not be disappointed.

Positives: Salim was an exceptional guide. Knowledgable, responsive, empathetic; a joy to get to know and spend time with. He adapted to the needs/interests of the clients. The overall program was a very good balance of ‘safari’ and cultural opportunities and learnings. In particular, going to the authentic Masai village (vs. the more commercial ones that other hosts promote) and the school were very enlightening. The local meals and the accompanying discussion were illuminating. We were very compatible with our four fellow travelers. Although that is not something that RS can directly control, I suspect that the values and approach that RS promotes generally results in a self-selection of considerate and compassionate clients and this added depth to our trip.
Suggestions: Too much food. At a minimum, I would suggest that for the box lunches an option to skip these should be presented to your clients. I did this once, but would have done so earlier and more often had I realized that it could be an option. By proactively asking the clients (e.g. the evening before) if they want a box lunch the next day it would save on waste and (in my case) belt line expansion! There was a lot of windshield time and not much time to exercise. I recognize that the windshield time is dictated by the nature of a safari trip, but it would be nice to somehow find a way to increase the opportunity for exercise. To the extent possible, it would be nice to reduce the number of 1-night lodging stays. When we spent 2 nights in a given location it allowed for a little more settling in. I know this is partly the nature of a safari...Also, the Ngorongoro Caldera was our favorite stop. We were only in the Caldera from about 7-12 AM. It would be great if a late afternoon visit (e.g. 4-7 pm) could be added the evening before.
Overall: This trip exceeded expectations. I much prefer independent travel but whenever my next guided trip occurs it will very likely be with RS.

Amazing trip-- the skilled guides, our fellow travelers, and of course everything we saw and learned about Tanzania and the wildlife there.

I've been on many trips, and this was the best of them all.

A wonderful, thoroughly enjoyable experience, made better by excellent guides. Not only did we see a n extensive amount of wildlife, we were introduced to the people and cultures of Tanzania. This trip completely fulfilled a life-long dream. Worth the long trip to get there and was great value for the price,

This tour exceeded all of my expectations in regard to learning about the Maasai culture and up-close experiences with a wide variety of animals. I highly recommend this tour , especially as a first safari experience.

I found my experience on my recent trip on the Great migration in Tanzania totally magical! The sightings and observation of the animals was wonderful, and I realized the expertise of our great guides increased a great experience! All the lodges and tented camps were top notch and the food and service was outstanding. Loved each and every day of my trip!! Highly recommend going!! Just do it

This trip was so much more than a safari (although we had awesome safari drives). Meeting so many Tanzanian people was a treat. I especially enjoyed our two trips to visit schools. The experience was enjoyable.
— Review left October 28, 2025
This is an amazing trip but it is somewhat rigorous. The travels in the safari vehicle are over rough and dusty roads and at times it can be very hot. The sighting of wild animals is incredible, our guides really knew their stuff and worked hard at sighting and pointing out the animals. The accommodations were beautiful although somewhat rustic. It made the experience authentic.I would highly recommend this trip.

This trip exceeded our expectations: wonderful, kind guides who very knowledgeably led us on amazing safari expeditions in spectacular landscapes and through fascinating cultural experiences. Every aspect of the trip was well organized and timed. A trip of a lifetime, for sure!

What a great trip! The wildlife (mammals and birds) was spectacular and accessible. The chance to learn of Tanzania and local customs was an unexpected plus. Accommodations (room and board) were comfortable: glamping has its attraction! The group leaders were helpful, organized and flexible. They contributed to the cohesiveness and closeness of the group.

The Tanzania Great Migration program was the trip of a lifetime for me. The Tanzanian guides were superlative. I learned so much. And I appreciated how well organized the trip was and that the level of expected physical exertion was accurately specified.

Tanzania and the great migration tour was amazing. I am very impressed with the country and emphasis placed on protecting the wildlife while coexisting with the many tribes. The locals who made the visit very special, truly made me feel welcomed. The timing of the game drives and the lectures and the presentations such as visiting the school and the handicapped workshop, made a great varied schedule.

This program was the best Road Scholar program that we have ever attended. It put us way out of our comfort zone and into part of life's reality. I felt as if I had grown both mentally and physically.
Thank you, Road Scholar, for sending us to Tanzania on the Great Migration of East Africa. It will forever be in our memories.

Babenga and Ally are treasures. This safari exceeded all expectations and was a life changing experience.

This is a fabulous trip to learn about a new country, a third world country and exciting wildlife sittings. The small group was a perfect size, the accommodations were great in many ways, the learning of different parts of the culture was amazing and the positive attitudes of the participants and guides was a pleasure.

This was my 12th Road Scholar trip. They have all been exceptional, but this one was above and beyond. If you are a critter person, I highly recommend this spectacular trip. I can't imagine any other organization exceeding Road Scholar in Tanzania.

Fantastic! This adventure had a balanced itinerary that brought some of the local culture into focus thru visits to authentic places, not touristy creations. Of course the featured activities are game drives, and they delivered in spades. I see some of my fellow travelers’ reviews below and echo their praise for Ally and Innocent; in short “The Dream Team.” They shone light and facilitated camaraderie at every turn. I also read some disappointed travelers’ reviews (from a different date), and see they were put off by perceived inconveniences— bucket showers, cold tent lodging where we expected it to be cold— that we turned into memorable moments that brought a smile. The trick to bucket showering is to hop in as soon as they deliver the hot water. And did those uncomfortable travelers not find the hot water bottles tucked under the heavy duvet to make you feel cozy all cold night? That was a nice touch we all commented on at breakfast. We just had THE best time.
— Review left August 15, 2025
We have been on several Road Scholar trips I would not recommend this trip as we have experienced it. One jeep was 25 years old and without air conditioning. We did not go to the advertised accommodations for parts of the trip. We had bucket showers that barely worked. There wasn’t any heating in the semi-permanent or temporary camps. We were supposed to be in a permanent camp. We only spent a few hours at the Ngorongoro crater and were hauled off early to a second school visit of a seven day tour. This time of the year is extremely crowded, with other vehicles pulling in front of each to catch a glimpse of the poor animals trapped between jeeps. It is routine to have aggressive drivers trying to catch the great migration river crossing of the wildebeest. Serengeti is a fantastic wildlife park but the poor management of the local authorities and over crowding negatively affected our experience. Our guides made the best of a bad situation. Babinga was very helpful identifying wildlife and birds.

Innocent and Ally were the best guides! We saw an amazing amount of animals and birds and learned so much about them. The experiences in the marketplace, schools, and several homes were fascinating. This was a bucket list trip for me and was better than I ever imagined it could be!

While we have travelled a great deal around the world, this trip has become our favorite of all time. We saw so much flora and fauna including the end point of the Great Migration with wildebeest crossing the Mara River into Maasai Mara. A major reason for the success of this trip was our guides, Innocent and Ally. They were so knowledgeable about animal behavior; for example, often counselling patience that then afforded a remarkable view of nature in action. Moreover, their sense of humor made for many a laugh at meal time! While game drives were the primarly reason for the trip, the visit to the Maasai Village and the several schools we visited were very memorable. Go, you won't regret it!
— Review left August 11, 2025
The guides Babenga and Kelvin Kiondo were superb in every way from their knowledge and expert driving on rough terrain to their humour and tact in handling the dynamics of our small group. A suggestion on the vehicles : one was in noticeable less functioning order: the air conditioner didn’t work and the windows had to be opened by the driver as they were stuck. This made an impact on the very very dusty roads. My sister had bad congestion for days even while wearing a face mask. The lodging was acceptable except for the second angata mobile camp which was unbearably cold. The bush shower barely trickled out lukewarm water and towels were damp on arrival. The hot water bottle provided to be placed in our beds was the single relief from the cold. Not a pleasant night after a long day of game drives!
Lastly, I am disappointed in the travel service department of RS. We booked our trip through you and received a call suggesting an alternative route because of the Iran bombing in Qatar. We voluntarily accepted the suggested change and asked for a refund of the RS charge . When we returned, we called to ask about the outcome and found out that the case was never filed. After a second filing, the supervisor denied our request with abrupt arguing. Secondly, Upon our arrival at the airport, our driver told us that he had driven 45 minutes early that morning because he had our original arrival time. Holbrook hadn’t informed them of the change. These two incidents have made my sister and I decide to not book air travel with RS in the future.
I would lastly suggest changing the physical challenge from 2 bars to 3 because of the rough continuous bumpy long drives on dusty unpaved roads.

The recent experience I had participating in Road Scholar's program, "Tanzania and the Great East African Migration", was amazing beyond my expectations. The guides were top notch: knowledgeable, savvy, smart, funny, kind, ... With eyes on the road and hands on the wheel, they did not miss, e.g., a bird perched on a tree branch or a lion in the bush. They saw everything and helped us each to see what was there. The group was small and just perfect for the experience. Each of us is a quirky individual but together under the expertise of our group leaders we coalesced into a close cohort. I had a GREAT time, traveling with Road Scholar to see the Great Migration.
— Review left August 3, 2025
The itinerary was excellent. The guides were very knowledgeable about Serengeti, avoiding crowded times and tourist traps. One of the 4x4s did not have AC. The one night stay at Angata Ngorngoro crater was not comfortable, shower wasn't working, towel were damp, and overall too cold. Food was excellent as were all the other accommodations.

Road Scholar sent me on a marvelous trip to Tanzania. I've been many places and have many of the world's people which I've really like, but the people of Tanzania were the finest. They are extremely friendly, helpful to one another, humorous and kind. Of course the animals were amazing as well.
The contractor that road Scholar used for this trip was top notch. Our Guide Isaiah Siima was everything a guide could be. Super intelligent, knew so much about the animals as well as the history of the peoples of Tanzania, great sense of humor and organization. We visited cultural sites lie schools filled with lovey children that were eager to learn and be friendly.
Amazingly the guides boss Lucas of this contractor invited us to his house. Besides running this business he's been instrumental in achieving moneys with which he built 4 schools for public education. Additionally besides his 3 children he & his wife are raising 3 orphans as well.
This was my first rip with Road Scholar but it won't be my last. Thanks to everyone both at Road Scholar & the members of the guide company which was remarkable.

This is a fabulous trip. Our guides we so special. The places picked were unique and gave greater insight to issues today. We saw firsthand the effects of climate change. Kudos to Road Scholar in making adjustments so that we did see part of the migration in spite in the change in climate. We have been to Tanzania 4 previous times with different venders over the past 25+ years and this, by far, was the best trip.

Trip was fantastic and more than expected. A few thoughts.... In your materials re: this trip you don't mention seeing giraffes, which is the national animal of Tanzania. We saw them EVERY day! Such a wonderful amazing animal. My favorite. Advertise them! Another request: consider making O'Hare/Chicago one of your Flagship flight airport. Middle of the country etc.
I would recommend this trip to anyone.

This was a wonderful trip. July 2024 the weather was perfect. Our guides, Eddy and Ally, were excellent. Lucas, owner of Carnivore Safaris, was a most gracious host. We saw much wildlife, all the "big 5", and much more. The most memorable wildlife viewing drive was our sunrise trip to the hippo pool. To see the huge hippos emerge from the forest after their night of browsing and foraging, entering their pool in the river, and finding their comfortable spot and preferred companions was very moving. All the accommodations were fine; I liked the camps better than the lodges. The care and attention of the staff in the camps was especially fine. One little disappointment; at night I slept so soundly that I did not hear any of the wildlife noise on the other side of the canvas that others spoke of at breakfast. So, perhaps I need to do this again!

Although this was my first Road Scholar trip, I had heard good things about RS for years and they certainly didn't disappoint. Road Scholar provided me with very organized and detailed information about what the trip I chose would be like. And anytime I called with questions, they were polite, patient and informative. I would definitely recommend a Road Scholar trip to anyone seeking adventure.

This was a very interesting, educational, and well-organized adventure with very knowledgeable and personable guides. Thank you Moses and Kelvin for guiding and teaching us so much! Although some of the accommodations were luxurious, I did not find this to be a particularly relaxing vacation. That was fine for me, as I expected very early starts to see so many amazing animals; too many to even list! You stay in the Land Cruisers to do many game drives and see animals everywhere. When in the Serengeti, you drive long distances on very dusty and bumpy roads with no airconditioning, so definitely bring a good mask and a backbrace if you want more back stability. There are sufficient bathroom breaks (kept clean by attendants) and there is plenty of bottled water in the vans and lodges. To see the herds of wildebeests actually crossing the Mara River was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I found the food delicious with so many choices and opportunities to try new things, especially at the buffets. Great spices and so nice to be met at each lodge with juices and warm washcloths. Glamping at the Land of Nature camp was a highlight, although the roaring lion next to our tent kept me awake! We were able to have laundry done here. We woke up to three beautiful giraffes outside our mobile tent. Bucket showers were adequate, but don't expect good water pressure. Another highlight was the visit to the Maasai Village and school where we were met with beautiful singing. Our guides brought the Maasai people (such a difference in their way of life) lots of food. We visited an amazing market in Arusha. Bring plenty of smaller American currency as credit cards are not used at several locations. Weather in August was beautiful; dry warm days and cool nights. Due to such a long plane ride, it is unlikely I will return, but wish I could! So glad I did this trip and highly recommend.

This was on my bucket list since I was 5 years old. It was an incredible adventure that I will never forget. Moses was out leader and he was the very BEST! He was organized, professional, friendly, humorous, accomodating, and just a great leader. He knew EVERYTHING about every animal (including great imitations of the animals). He made the trip the incredible experience that it was. Length of time of trip was perfect. HIGHLY RECOMMEND this trip!

This was one of my most exceptional travel experiences ever -- particularly seeing the wildebeests crossing the Marra River and the sheer size of the herds on the northern Serengeti's plains. The variety and numbers of the wildlife we saw were far beyond my expectations, and our two guides/drivers (Moses Melaya and Kelvin Kiondo) were deeply knowledgeable about the animals and exceptionally skilled at negotiating the rough roads in the game parks. You should be aware, however, that the long hours of riding in cramped safari vehicles on bumpy and dusty roads makes this a physically demanding trip for participants.

The Africa Safari trip was outstanding in every way. The guides were wonderful. We saw thousands of animals up close and it was the very best trip of my life. I have been on many adventure trips including Equidor and Matu Pitcu, the Gallopigos, Antarctica and lots of Europe trips, Fantastic!

Ok, what should I say... I was worried, I'm too old and all that. Then came Moses, our African (and very wonderfully modern, I might add) guide. Moses absolutely made the trip for me from start to finish. I cannot say enough good things about this fabulous trip!! Just do it!! Road Scholar does their job in hiring THE BEST LOCAL PEOPLE!! And
thank you Allan (oh, I adored Allan, the young one) and Moses, the best guides ever! Not only did they take care of me (all of us), they gave use such a comprehensive view of their country of which their love was obvious!! This is a fabulous trip and a bargain not to be missed. If you possibly can, I say do it.

Thanks to them.

This is a wonderful program with windows on animal behaviour, Tanzanian schools and Masai culture. Ask for Moses Meleya to be your guide. You won't be disappointed.
— Review left February 16, 2024
A thoroughly wonderful trip. Our guide, Ally, was excellent. He is knowledgeable, personable, practical, and patient. For the life of me, I don't know how he managed to drive in very challenging road conditions (rutted, muddy, sometimes flooded "roads") and simultaneously spot all sorts of wildlife.
The accommodations and food exceeded my expectations. The mobile tent camp especially was much less rustic than I thought it would be. My only suggestion would be to add (or improve) battery storage to the solar power system. We had cloudy, rainy weather while we were there; as a result the lighting in the tents was very dim. A note on the food - my only disappointment was that we did not have more opportunities to try typical Tanzanian dishes. The Tanzanian lunch served at Mto Wa Mbu was a highlight in that respect.
Overall: highly recommended program!!

The trip was great for animal and migration sightings, game drives and visits to local villages at southern, central and northern Serengeti National Park grassland, woodland and watering holes. My trip highlight was the game drive down to and through the Ngorongoro Crater.
My biggest regret was the "African Massage". Two weeks game drives on the uneven, rough and dusty roads were too much for us. Note that our tour group consisted of mostly senior citizens. The tour guides were extremely helpful and received great services from the local staff.
A reminder for all travelers: Beware of the African Massage if you have back or joint problems. Another note for future travelers is that you are expected to camp among wild animals. You are safe if you stay in your tent after dark.

I signed up for this program as a post-trekking safari after Kilimanjaro. It turned out to be a trip-of-a-lifetime. It conveniently starts in Arusha where I was staying. Elephants and lions at Tarangire National Park kicked off this amazing journey. Traveling the Serengeti from one end to the other is a great way to see the migration, with millions of animals in their natural habitat. It was amazing to see the wildebeest crossing the Mara River. I brought my camera with an 18-200mm zoom lens and had good results. There were many animals close to the safari vehicles for a phone camera. The trip leaders Moses and Babenga were fun and knowledgeable. Lodging was comfortable. I can still hear the lions roar in a distance.

We were originally scheduled to take this trip in March 2020. Three days before departure, Covid changed everything. We were so glad to finally visit Tanzania in January 2022. It was one of the best trips we’ve taken. Lucas and Babenga were excellent guides! They shared so much of their knowledge with us. The sheer numbers of animals we saw was mind blowing, many of them up close. Another highlight was our interaction with the Maasai and other Tanzanians. Everyone was very friendly and so happy that we had come. The food exceeded our expectations. Lots of fresh vegetables and fruits. Minor inconveniences because of Covid were easy to overcome. We wore masks the few times we were around people (i.e. hotels, restroom stops). Most of the time we were in the open air. Testing was easy at the airport. No place was very crowded. It truly is one of the best times to visit!

If you want to see animals in the wild, this is the trip for you. The running joke was "oh, just another Giraffe, Elephant, Zebra, etc".
Also, be advised, this is Africa, so not wheelchair friendly. Also, a lot of travel time on back roads, so if you have a bad back, be aware. If you have 4 wheeled in the past, you will love the roads! Also, bring binoculars!
— Review left January 29, 2022
This was truly an outstanding trip. Excellent guides & itinerary. Incredible number of animals seen. Top notch accommodations and meals. Much contact with the locals helped paint a good picture of life in Tanzania. The covid was only a minor hindrance. The testing went fine and we were able to cross all paperwork hurdles.
— Review left January 28, 2022
This trip went above and beyond any expectation I had. This is the perfect time to go to Tanzania. While Covid has certainly made traveling more uncertain, the advantage is that there are so few tourists! There were times when we felt like we had “the place to ourselves.” You can see so much more - close up and personal. We are so glad we did this trip.

The only problem I encountered was in getting the visa for Tanzania. Our only other trip to Africa (South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Zambia) included Road Scholar (or it's agent) obtaining the necessary visas for our crossing from one country to another. We could not scan the necessary documents for one of the methods to obtain the Tanzanian visas. Then, because it was not clear why the visa process went through Barcelona, my credit card company thought that it was a fraudulent transaction and cancelled my card. We were really worried that we would not get the visas. Holbrook was very supportive through the process of signing up for the program and getting the type of airline accommodations we wanted. They also came through for an extension of four days beyond the Road Scholar portion of the trip.

When choosing a place to view wildlife choose Tanzania. The Serengeti National Park, Tarangire and Ngorongoro Crater are home to an amazing abundance of wild life and birds. The opportunity to view the Wildebeest migration is one you cannot miss. Group leaders are outstanding, groups are small, safari vehicles clean, and well maintained, accomodations comfortable and varied so you enjoy experiences from lodges, to semi permanent tents and bush camps. A really well planned adventure. Don't miss it!

Tanzania and the Great East African Migration tour was fantastic! I saw more animals than I ever expected, many very close, and we were able to observe the whole circle of life. Our tour guides, Salim and Babenga, were superb--very knowledgeable, patient and approachable. This Road Scholar tour definitely fulfilled one of my bucket list items!

Program far exceeded my expectations and most of that was due to the Group Leader Allan Martin and Carnivore Safaris, the provider for the program. The Migration of Wildebeest was in a word "astounding". Seeing the animals from horizon-to-horizon was simply breathtaking. Our group of seven was split between two Safari vehicles so we were never crowded or lacked a viewing spot to see the wildlife. This program had the best "box meals" of any program I have attended. The owner of Carnivore Safaris hosted everyone to a luncheon the last day to get our feedback on what could be improved. I think to a person he only got compliments. His wife was responsible for thinking up the containers that allowed to the "box meals" to be hot and appetizing and not just another "Brown Bag" as usual. I would recommend this Program to everyone who likes seeing the wildlife and the dependence all wildlife in the big picture.
