Afternoon: If time permits, you will take a short orientation walk around this delightful village. Attend an orientation. The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the program theme, the up-to-date Daily Schedule and any changes, discuss safety guidelines, emergency procedures, roles and responsibilities, and answer any questions you may have. Indicated times are approximate. Program activities, schedules, and personnel may need to change due to local circumstances. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

Dinner: Welcome dinner at the hotel. Water is included in the program cost at all meals. Unless otherwise noted, dinners on this program are typically a three course set menu.

Activity note: Up to 5 miles of walking for 4 hours on natural trails.

Breakfast: At the hotel. On this program, breakfasts will offer a typical European style breakfast buffet with breads, cheese, cold-cuts, yogurt, fruit, cereals, juice, milk, coffee, tea and water.

Morning: Take a public bus to the town of Mösern and hike up to Lake Mösern (4300 feet). Enjoy the splendid views as you learn about the flora and launa of Lake Mösern. Continue to Lottenseehütte on a scenic trail overlooking the Inn Valley.

Lunch: Light fare at the hut.

Afternoon: Continue through a trail to Wildmoosalm and then back to Seefeld through the woods.

Dinner: At the hotel.

The Gorge of the Spirits, Mittenwald, Germany

Activity note: Up to 5 miles of walking for 4 hours natural trails and on iron bridges; there will be unavoidable stairs.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: Depart by local bus through the scenic Leutasch valley, winding through hamlets along the road, to the entrance of the Gorge of the Spirits (Geisterklamm). The Gorge of the Spirits path is built on a series of iron bridges leading down the valley, providing a safe passage which overlooks the watercourse of Leutascher Ache. After crossing the border between Austria and Germany, reach Mittenwald (3028 feet), one of the most popular Bavarian villages.

Lunch: After a short stroll through Mittenwald, enjoy a typical lunch at a Bavarian beer garden.

Afternoon: After lunch, walk uphill for half an hour overlooking Mittenwald. In another half hour, walk to Lake Ferchensee, a scenic Alpine lake at the foot of the Wetterstein mountain range, facing the steep limestone rocks of Karwendel Nature Park. After a short break, continue by bus to the Mittenwald train station to return to Seefeld for free time.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: Depart by regional train (approx. 40 minutes) to Innsbruck (1883 feet). Enjoy an expert-led city excursion through Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol.

Lunch: At a local establishment located in the old town of Innsbruck.

Afternoon: Take this opportunity for personal independent exploration to see and do what interests you most. Please refer to the list of Free Time Opportunities, which can be found in the first Information Packet or on the Road Scholar website. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions and give directions. You may want to visit the Tyrolean State Museum. Return to Seefeld at your own pace.

Activity note: Up to 5 miles of walking for 5 hours on natural trails; there will be unavoidable stairs.

Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel.

Morning: Travel by private coach (approx. 45 minutes) to Lake Achensee (3005 feet), Tyrol's largest alpine lake and well known for its outstanding natural beauty. Walk from the charming village of Pertisau to Bärenbad Alm (4370 feet), enjoying the spectacular views overlooking the fjord like Lake Achensee and the wilderness of Nature Park Karwendel.

Lunch: Light lunch at Bärenbad Alm.

Afternoon: Our hike continues down to the charming village of Pertisau. There is an option to take a funicular from near Bärenbad Alm back to Pertisau. From there enjoy a relaxing boat ride across Lake Achensee to Scholastika, where a bus and train will return us to Seefeld.

Dinner: At the hotel.

Activity note: Up to 5.5 miles of hiking for 4 hours on natural trails with inclines and declines.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: After breakfast travel by local transport to the resting area "Almparadies Gaistal" (30 min). On well-maintained hiking trails we reach the mountain pasture "Hämmermoosalm" in about an hour. From there, the path leads only slightly ascending through spruce forests and later just below the forest border through mountain pine trees along the "Wurzigen Steige" to the Wetterstein hut, (5630 feet).

Lunch: Picnic lunch.

Afternoon: We enjoy fantastic views of the Wetterstein Mountains and the entire Seefelder plateau with distant view into the Central Alps. The descent takes place in the first third on a serpentine path and further down on a forest path back into the valley.

Morning: After breakfast depart by private coach to Castelrotto (3470 feet), entering Italy through the Brennero pass. We stop in the medieval town of Bressanone visiting the historic town center and the 12th-century Duomo with its 14th-century frescoes. Learn about the history of this ancient transit route over the Alps from Germany to Italy.

Lunch: Light meal at a local establishment en route to Castelrotto.

Afternoon: Arrive in Castelrotto. Time permitting, take a short orientation walk in this beautiful village.

Dinner: At the hotel.

Castelrotto, From Compatsch to Puflatsch

Morning: Travel by local trasport (15 minutes) from Castelrotto to Siusi and then take the cable car to Compatsch (6102 feet). Here you will start your walking field trip to Puflatsch. On the way, take in a field lecture entitled “Puflatsch."

Lunch: At a picturesque Tyrolean inn.

Afternoon: Continue walking to Saltria with views of Sciliar, "the Mountain Range of the Witches." Take in a field lecture about this area.

Dinner: At the hotel.

Scenic Walk from Fié to Siusi

Activity note: Up to 5 miles of walking for 4 hours on natural trails.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: Depart by local bus (approx. 30 minutes) to the village of Fié, located at the edge of a steep valley. We follow a gentle path (30 minutes) leading up to the Lagetto di Fié, a scenic pond at the foot of Sciliar--the most distinguished summit of the area. From the pond, we continue down through the woods and follow a gentle path along the Weiherweg (Trail of the Pond), until we reach Siusi (approx. 2 hours). From Siusi, take a short bus ride to the Old Mill. Enjoy two field lectures titled, "How Ancient Grains are Milled" and "The Botany of the Area." Observe the miller operating the mill.

Lunch: Picnic at the mill.

Afternoon: Walk back to Siusi and return by public transport back to Castelrotto.

Dinner: At the hotel.

Activity note: Up to 2 miles of walking for 3 hours through town and in the museum.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: This morning, take public transport (approx. 1 hour) to Bolzano (859 feet), the capital of South Tyrol. Enjoy an expert-led excursion through the city before visiting the Archealogical Museum. This museum is known for its 5000-year-old mummy Ötzi, who was found in the glaciers on the Austrian - Italian border. Enjoy the museum at your own pace.

Lunch: Light meal at a local establishment.

Afternoon: Take this opportunity for personal independent exploration to see and do what interests you most before returning to Castelrotto on your own by local transportation. Please refer to the list of Free Time Opportunities, which can be found in the first Information Packet or on the Road Scholar website. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions and give directions.

Morning: Travel by local coach (approx. 15 minutes) to Seis and then take a cable car to Compatsch (6102 feet). From here, walk to the Molignon hut (6737 feet). Take in a field lecture called “Flora, Fauna of the Dolomites.”

Lunch: At the hut.

Afternoon: Continue walking to the Passo Duron (7112 feet). Breathtaking views await you at the pass, overlooking the Dolomite mountains. Take a circular trail back to Saltria and return to Castelrotto by public transport.

Dinner: Farewell reception and dinner at the hotel.

Evening: Local entertainment at the hotel.
