Day
1
In the Beginning
Location:

Activity Note
Today’s session will start at 11:00 a.m. and end at 1:30 p.m. (Eastern Time).
Morning:
11:00 a.m.: Welcome Meeting (15 minutes). Participants will gain an overview of the program and Zoom, and learn how to make the most of this online adventure. 11:15 a.m.: Lecture – In the Beginning… (45 minutes). We will cover the geological formation of what is now Scotland, the earliest settlements there, the Bronze and Iron Ages, how and where people lived, their customs, and travel.
Afternoon:
12:00 Noon: Break (15 minutes). 12:15 p.m.: Group Introductions (15 minutes). 12:30 p.m.: Lecture – Immigration (45 minutes). We will discuss the arrival of the Romans, Irish, and Vikings; their influence and impact; how Scotland changed, and its founding as a nation in 843 CE. 1:15 p.m.: Q&A and Wrap-up (15 minutes).

The Emergence of the Scottish Nation

Today’s session will start at 11:00 a.m. and end at 1:30 p.m. (Eastern Time).
Morning:
11:00 a.m.: Daily Review with the Group Leader (15 minutes). 11:15 a.m.: Lecture – Societal Shifts (45 minutes). We’ll discuss Kenneth I’s progression from warlord to the first King of Scotland, 11th-century townships, fortified castles, Roman Catholicism, and trade and language in the East of Scotland. 11:50 a.m.: Interactive Q&A with the Group Leader and our instructor (20 minutes).
Afternoon:
12:10 p.m.: Break (15 minutes). 12:25 p.m.: Lecture – Power Struggles (45 minutes). Topics include the Viking presence; the struggle of the wars of independence; warships, weaponry, and military strategy; the power struggle between England and Scotland; William Wallace; and Robert the Bruce. 1:10 p.m.: Q&A and Wrap-up (20 minutes).

The Stewarts

Activity Note
Today’s session will start at 11:00 a.m. and end at 1:30 p.m. (Eastern Time).
Morning:
11:00 a.m.: Daily Review with Group Leader (5 minutes). 11:05 a.m.: Lecture – The Stewarts (45 minutes). We will talk about the emergence of the Stewarts as a royal dynasty; literary, artistic, and musical culture of the time; intermarriage between European royalty; Mary, Queen of Scots; the Protestant Reformation; and how James VI, King of Scotland became James I, King of England and Ireland.
Afternoon:
12:25 p.m.: Lecture – The Parts the Stewarts Did Not Reach (45 minutes). We will cover the West of Scotland; the clan system; tartans, bagpipes, dancing, and food; and the division of the Highlands and Lowlands. 1:10 p.m.: Q&A and Wrap-up (20 minutes).

A Century Like No Other

Activity Note
Today’s session will start at 11:00 a.m. and end at 1:30 p.m. (Eastern Time).
Morning:
11:00 a.m.: Daily Review with Group Leader (5 minutes). 11:05 a.m.: Lecture – The Jacobites (45 minutes). Topics include rebellions against the English monarchy by Stewart loyalists known as the Jacobites, the Union of 1707 that brought England and Scotland together as Great Britain, the effects of unification, and later migration to the United States and Canada. 11:50 a.m.: Interactive Q&A (20 minutes).
Afternoon:
12:10 p.m.: Break (15 minutes). 12:25 p.m.: Lecture – The Enlightenment, From Agriculture to Robert Burns (45 minutes). We’ll discuss the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions, the economic impact of transatlantic trade, and the man considered to be Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns. 1:10 p.m.: Q&A and Wrap-Up (20 minutes).

Scotland’s Relationship with the UK

Morning:
11:00 a.m.: Daily Review with the Group Leader (5 minutes). 11:05 a.m.: Lecture – The Impact of War (45 minutes). We will discuss industrial change and the societal impact of both World Wars. 11:50 a.m.: Interactive Q&A (20 minutes).
Afternoon:
12:10 p.m.: Break (15 minutes). 12:25 p.m.: Lecture – Moving to the Present Time (45 minutes). For our final lecture, we’ll talk about the changes affecting Scotland over the past 50 years, questions regarding its continued existence as part of the United Kingdom; literature, art, and music; and the impact of national politics on society and culture. 1:10 p.m.: Final Q&A and Farewells (20 minutes). This concludes our program.
