I have mixed feeling about this lecture. While watching, I thought - this is all about Evalyn Walsh McLean, what is the curse? I am still not sure. Is it the loss of family members? I have lost family members, many friends have lost family members, and we do not have huge diamonds. Loss is part of life. I guess I was anticipating more history of the diamond.

This was a light adventure in the Gilded Age of America for a wealthy mining family. It felt like listening to a family history more than the actual tragic "curse" of the diamond but was a pleasant 90 mins of my life.

Carolyn Crouch started her lecture with these simple words. As i paraphrase, this lecture is about..”a person, a gem, and a story”.. For me, it was a grand adventure back in time to the mid 1800’s when two obscure men, Thomas Walsh and John McClean, set out to make their fortunes in America. It was also about their children, Evelyn Walsh and Ned McClean, that were raised among the opulence of the guilded age, later married, and bought the Hope diamond. The lecture was not just about Evelyn Walsh McClean, but also some of the history and origins of the Hope Diamond. Carolyn Crouch did an awesome job in her research. I plan on attending any lecture she may have in the future.
