As part of our 50th Anniversary celebration in 2025, Road Scholar is thrilled to offer this special gift to our participants: a free virtual lecture by Doris Kearns Goodwin, one of the most renowned historians of our time. At a pivotal moment in our nation’s history, as we confront a cascade of crises — concerns about the fragility of our democracy and a deepening political polarization unmatched since the Civil War — Doris Kearns Goodwin offers critical historical context. Not since the 1850s has our nation been so politically divided. Not since the Great Depression and World War II have we faced such a succession of shared hardships. And not since the 1960s have we grappled so intensely with the struggle for social and economic equality. Drawing from her book, “Leadership: In Turbulent Times,” Goodwin transports us back in time to provide perspective and analysis as she helps us understand how the presidents she’s studied most closely — Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt and Lyndon Johnson — provide proof that as a country and a people we’ve been through most difficult times before and came through stronger. History, as Goodwin demonstrates, provides lessons, solace and even hope.

Your online lecture will take place live over the course of 1-2 hours. All times are listed in the EASTERN time zone. If you live in a different time zone, please adjust your schedule accordingly. This live online experience uses Zoom Webinar, an easy-to-use web video service that includes closed captioning. All you need is an Internet connection and your computer. You will receive a confirmation email when you enroll, and a reminder email one week and one day before, as well as the morning of the event with a link and instructions on how to tune in. PLEASE NOTE: This is a special event and a password will be needed to access the webinar. This password will be included in the reminder emails. You will not be pictured on screen during the lecture, but you will have the opportunity to ask the instructor live questions using the Q&A box. Unless otherwise noted, all those who enroll in this program receive access to the live event as well as a recording of the lecture that you can watch any time within the two weeks following the live event. Doris Kearns Goodwin

Doris Kearns Goodwin is a world-renowned presidential historian, public speaker, and Pulitzer Prize-winning, #1 New York Times best-selling author. She earned a Ph.D. in government from Harvard, where she taught courses on the American presidency. A former White House Fellow who worked with President Lyndon Johnson, she later assisted in preparing his memoirs. Her acclaimed book, 'Leadership: In Turbulent Times,' draws on five decades of scholarship on Lincoln, both Roosevelts, and LBJ. Goodwin lives in Boston and is a devoted Red Sox fan.
