At a Glance

When prospectors finally struck pay dirt in the Yukon, Seattle was more than ready to mine the miners. Hopeful men and women rode the railroads to Seattle and the city eagerly met them, offering to sell outfitting, entertainment and ship passage north. From bank deposits to brothel profits, the Klondike Gold Rush made Seattle, inflating it from a large town in 1890 to a small city by 1905. Using richly illustrated images, historian and author Lorraine McConaghy will show the lively experience of the Gold Rush city at work and play.
