At a Glance

In Renaissance Venice, commoners, nuns and women of the middle class did not have the economic possibilities of the higher classes to strive for emancipation. They were compelled to develop different strategies and found ways to express their dissent through texts and actions. This lecture explores the silent struggles of women engaged in humble trades and occupations, as well as the experiences of nuns who were often marginalized and overlooked. In spite of their limited conditions, women were able to challenge the societal, patriarchal norms of the time. Learn about the resilience and resistance demonstrated by Moderata Fonte, Arcangela Tarabotti, Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia, Sara Copio Sullam and other women of Venice in the Renaissance.
