This was a dynamic, engaging program and a terrific opportunity to be with my grandchild--a way to build lasting memories.

Two Stars: This trip was our 13th Road Scholar trip and the third for our 11 year old granddaughter. This was the most disappointing of all our trips. Overall, this grandparent trip did not seem child-oriented. Positive: The accommodations, hotel food, and location for the Embassy Suites Hotel were all excellent. Our group guide Rick was organized and did a good job. The Gadsby Tavern tour was excellent with experts who understood how to engage children. The tour to the DC Monuments and Memorials was very good, as was our tour of the Capitol Building. We loved the People's House Museum but wished we had been separated into two groups due to congestion in small rooms. We also enjoyed the Ghost Walk with a great guide. Negative: The itinerary was mostly good, but there is much room for improvement. Our group leader, Leigh, was very organized, but did not seem to understand how to engage children from 9-13. In general, there needs to be less lecture and more interactive activities with the children. The George Washington character needs to speak to children in language they understand. He did not. Going to Mount Vernon will work after renovations are complete but standing outside the mansion listening to lectures aimed at adults and focusing on the enslaved people did not meet our expectations. Another way to improve is by introducing what things to notice when we go to museums. We felt we were dumped in the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian without any highlights or suggestions what to do. We understand the need to be flexible, but a significant glitch impacting us was the result of a late switch of free time from morning to afternoon. We had made independent plans to visit the White House (unchangeable), so we missed the Building Museum. Very disappointing. This is the first Road Scholar trip that did not meet our expectations.

This was my 22nd program attended with Road Scholar. All have been different and varied but each was excellent. And each has been a good value for the money.

The Grandparent/Grandchild trip provided an opportunity to spend time with my grandson doing something that we both enjoyed. Being with a group allowed an opportunity for each of us to get to know and spend time with some other people as well as deepen our relationship. Our leaders were masterful in managing both the middle schoolers and the grandparents, no small accomplishment. Road Scholar attracts good people and we enjoyed everyone in the program.

Our 9 year old grandson and 12 year old granddaughter both describe the tour as “awesome.” How great is that!

The Best of the Capital with your Grandchild was an outstanding trip. Together, we all learned so much history and gained so much more knowledge of the DC area. A lot of walking but so worth it! Comfortable walking shoes is a must!
