The group leader, Judith, was AMAZING! Very knowledgeable about the area and great fun to spend the day with. I enjoyed the cooking classes. It was fun taking all of the areas public transportation including trains, buses, funiculars, ski lifts, gondolas and even a boat! I wish that our evening meals started earlier, such as 6 or 6:30. By the time we were all served and walked back to our hotels it was often 9pm and we were tired. She and a local guide arranged for a musician to play the accordion at a mountain top location that was one of my favorite experiences! (We did this instead of going to the coffee plantation that I was glad to miss) I appreciate that I was able to arrange my own flights but was provided transportation to the first hotel miles away. It was my first trip with you and I can't wait to schedule another.

A little more strenuous than I thought it would be but nicely accommodated. It was a wonderful trip, the alps fantastic, and such lovely participants.

Karin Mattli was excellent -- she was kind, personable, funny, responsible, responsive, efficient, professional, knowledgeable, clear, accommodating, and flexible. I'm running out of adjectives, but you get the gist! I couldn't have asked for a better tour leader!! A+++.

We had a great time with a wonderful group of people. Switzerland was absolutely beautiful and we participated in many fun activities. Hiking was a bit more challenging than we expected; despite the "gentle" designation, it is a hiking trip!

The quaintness of Appenzell is a wonderful way to begin this program. The first hike to Wildkirchli was a delight for all the senses. Poles were helpful on all of the hikes. Our guide, Karin was very organized and great in communication via email before and during the trip. Maria and Rudy were encouraging hiking guides and shared in our successes. It was wonderful that two options for hiking difficulty was offered on the second and subsequent hikes. Pontresina gave us beautiful scenery and cooler temperatures. Lugano was a bigger town. Our day guide in Lugano, Barbora was charming and knowledgeable. The field trips on this program are varied and informative of the region. Make sure you do the recommended exercises before this program to train your body. Ankle high hiking boots are a must.

What an amazing experience! Karin was a wonderful group leader, providing easier options with equal amounts of beauty for some of the challenging hikes. Appenzell was a cute little swiss town, easy to explore on foot. The trains, funiculars and gondolas provide clean, perfect transportation to amazing mountaintops. In Pontresina, we had access to the pool across the street which was warm with 3 different jet options. Behind the hotel was a chairlift up to the top of Alp Languard. In Lugano, all the rooms faced the beautiful lake and much to explore there. The itinerary was a great mix of hiking in amazing places, and cultural experiences. I traveled solo, enjoyed my single room, and made friends easily and miss them already.

We loved every moment of our time in Switzerland with Road Scholar and our most excellent guide, Karin. The schedule was perfect, the towns we stayed in were beautiful, the food was amazing, the guides were wonderful, and we would rank this tour as one of our favorites. We were given the choice to hike easy or more challenging trails, so everyone in the group was able to enjoy the hikes, regardless of their physical fitness level. The views were stunning, and we all enjoyed utilizing the public trains, buses and funiculars -- and especially the chair lift at Muottas Muragl - super exciting and the views were amazing! We were also given plenty of free time to explore on our own.

Gentle Hiking was a wonderful experience. Viewing the huge panoramas of the Swiss Alps was awe inspiring. I would suggest that you carefully evaluate your abilities. The high altitudes at times were challenging but we were given time to progress at our abilities. Our tour guides and leaders were able to make recommendations as they learned our abilities. Hiking shoes and walking sticks are a must especially when the trail might be wet or slippery. It snowed in early September which was a surprise to all of us and part of our hiking that day was adjusted when we moved to a lower altitude. Make sure to pack layers of clothing. We were all especially enchanted with our opportunity to participate in the parade of cows who were being moved from higher summer elevations to the lower winter ones. Many were decorated with flower necklaces and cow herders were wearing traditional costumes. Kudos to our tour leader for finding a way to postpone our morning departure time so that we were able to join in the fun. The opportunity to do our laundry at our 2nd hotel as part of our fee was very helpful. We all loved our "magic" city cards which allowed us to use local transportation (cable car, funicular, trams, trains, etc) to travel with our group easily as well as on our own if desired.

This is a great trip. The hills and mountains are breathtaking. I loved the various forms of transport to access hiking and touring areas. Hikes were more difficult that I expected. But Karin, our guide, did an awesome job of accomodating those that couldn't hike, or didn't want to hike, 4 miles downhill. All in all, a very special trip with a great guide. Do yourself a favor and experience this more quiet side of Switzerland.

The diversity of sight and experiences is what made this trip truly worthwhile for me. I had hiked in the Alps, and was looking for a different mix of sights in a less visited part of Switzerland. This trip was a visual feast--tall rugged crags, wide green valleys, glaciers, and a popular lake (Lugano). The leader and logistics were at the exceptional level I expect of Road Scholar. The hikes were demanding in footing but not in length.

I loved staying going to 3 different areas and staying at each long enough to wash out some clothes and go exploring on my own. If you can take a trip with our guide Karin Mattli, do it!
