Online Lecture: War in the Summer of 1940 — The Dunkirk Evacuation

This was another excellent program with Dr. Spencer Jones. I’ve now seen about five of his Road Scholar lectures, and he continues to be one of the best presenters on World War I and World War II. In this lecture, he walked us through the Dunkirk evacuation in a clear and compelling way, helping place it within the larger context of the dark and uncertain summer of 1940, when the outcome of the war was far from certain. His explanation of Operation Dynamo and how more than 300,000 Allied soldiers were evacuated from the beaches and harbor of Dunkirk made the scale and urgency of the event especially vivid. Also, learning about the losses was really an eye opener. Dr. Jones has a real gift for combining deep knowledge with engaging storytelling, and I always come away from his programs better informed and eager to learn more.

Like the first and third lectures in this series, Dr Jones gave a brilliant, easily digestible presentation of the prelude to and execution of the Dunkirk evacuation. Outstanding in every respect!

Dr. Spencer Jones is such an enthusiastic speaker! He made the evacuation at Dunkirk come alive for me. Even though I knew the results, His voice and word choices fed trepidation in me while the evacuation was occurring.
