At a Glance

Our expert, Dorris Welch, shares her observations and anecdotes of a variety of bird species that forage and wander our world’s oceans, gathered from her years of working daily on the Monterey Bay and her marine explorations worldwide. Bird adaptations for a marine existence are remarkable, from migration to long distance flight and foraging, to pair bonding, island nesting and care of young. Visit puffin and gannet seabird colonies, view albatross on the wing, and take a peek at sea cliff nesting peregrine falcons. Learn about each species' unique approach to making a living on the sea along with their survival challenges and success stories.
