Following the 1966 release of Pets Sounds, Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson embarked on an even more ambitious, groundbreaking project which was to be called SMiLE. The album, which was designed around the group's landmark hit “Good Vibrations,” explored a variety of topics that expressed Wilson’s deepest, most personal thoughts on his life, using highly imaginative and complex production methods and musical sounds in addition to Wilson’s patented multi-voice vocal arrangements. Wilson’s increasing mental instability and other factors resulted in SMiLE being shelved in 1967, but when he finally consented to releasing it in 2004, it became one of the most admired and revolutionary albums of the rock era. Join our California-based Grammy-nominated expert, Cary Ginell, for a musical journey filled with sensational sounds as he uncovers this lesser known work from Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys.

Your online lecture will take place live over the course of 1-2 hours. All times are listed in the EASTERN time zone. If you live in a different time zone, please adjust your schedule accordingly. This live online experience uses Zoom Webinar, an easy-to-use web video service that includes closed captioning. All you need is an Internet connection and your computer. You will receive a confirmation email when you enroll and a reminder email one week, one day, as well as the morning of the event with a link and instructions on how to tune in. You will not be pictured on screen during the lecture, but you will have the opportunity to ask questions to the instructor live using the Q&A box. Unless otherwise noted in the lecture description, all those who enroll in this program can attend the live event and will also receive a recording of the lecture that you can watch any time within two weeks following the live event.

Cary Ginell is a Grammy-nominated writer and music historian who has published 12 books on American music. After a 30-year career in public radio, where he produced documentaries and played music from his archive of historic recordings, he turned his attention to teaching and lecturing in both adult education courses and on cruise ships. Cary, who lives in Thousand Oaks, California, received his master’s degree in folklore from UCLA and currently is completing a term as president of the Association for Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC).
